Getting started with ESP-01 and WLED

I have posted several videos using ESP-01 (ESP8266) and WLED without really covering getting started with this MCU and ws2812b LED strip with WLED.
In this video, I cover programming the ESP01 with a jig and the WLED firmware. I use a WS2812B "shield" for my projects so it is super easy to get up and running.

Linux users I suggest esptool: github.com/espressif/esptool I use the command:
esptool.py write_flash 0x0 WLED_0.13.0-b7_ESP01.bin

good video man. that's a Grove connector I think because they were thr ones who started using that for power. I'm going to make my own breakout board for the esp I think. the wife wants custom lighting for our new kitchen and I want a multi output psu to go with my new siglent scope so I'm going to use an esp32 with a remote for the main controller then use the esp01 modules as simple wireless daisy chains. I'm not sure if I'm gonna use wled or just code my own custom simplistic set of effects because a career woman can't be having the bouncing ball effect going off while she shows the new kitchen off lol

I purchase an esp-01 recently but it isn't responding to AT commands or my project codes...Tried using several flashing tools to update it but not working. Could you help please

try shorting these pins while flashing: with the antenna at the top, right lowest most pin shorted with the third pin to the left

Have you connected the enable pin to VCC? It is marked EN on the board.
Which GPIO pin I need to connect with data pin?

It is GPIO 1 but I really recommend you just get the daughter board.
I am using an ESP-01 with WLED v0.13.0-b6. Anyone have the same problem with random restarts? Sometimes several times in an hour, sometimes not once the entire evening. After restart the device fallback to preset 1 and works fine again. (till the next random restart)

Yes I have had this. I don't know why it was doing it but a full erase of the esp-01 with esptool and a reflash seemed to fix it.
You did not mention that the programming jig need a button and you need to press it while plugging it in to flash ESP1

Depends what jig you have. Usually if you have a cheaper one you just need to short gpi0 to gnd.
If I use LED strips that are not RGB, aka 1 color only. Can I use this program?

Generally no. Mono strips usually do not have the neopixels to translate the commands from the controller. They will just have two connections for either power pin, no third pin for data.

Can I use this wled program together with esp-01 with a 10-meter LED strip?

@@muhammadisa6954 the length of the strip is not so much as important as the pixel density. You should be able to run around 512 leds on an ESP8266

i have flashed the wled software over the website. when i power it on i can't find a wlan ap. do you know why?

Did you flash a esp-01? Sorry haven't done it this way. AFAIK it isn't possible to OTA update a esp-01 due to the ram size.

@@JWNZ the on board flash has to be >=512kb. just read the data sheet haha

@@jstro-hobbytech That is for the esp-01 the esp-01s is 1MB. You can remove features from WLED for OTA to work.
I bought a cheap mood light from Poundstretcher (and yes it was cheap and nasty but all I really wanted was the enclosure) and ripped out its innards and replaced them with this system and a 12 segment neopixel ring. Now it actually deserves to be called a mood light. 😁

Every time i disconnect the power supply the settings are gone. Do you know Why?

@@JWNZ everything is gone. When i Flash the esp 01 file instead of the 8266 file the Setting wont reset but it will restart randomly

@@gudelauneee I have had the resetting issue and I had to erase the flash contents and start again with esptool. This can also be insufficient current. How are you powering it?

@@JWNZ With a usb Smartphone Charger 😅 2 ampere. Nur its only 73 LEDs
