Thank you for your presentation. I have this saw as my main scroll saw and don't back away from many projects. When setting up the saw on your table. place an old truck tire flap between the saw and table. It greatly reduces vibration. Truck stops will give you their "take-offs" if you ask them. I also purchased two longer set screws that hold the blades tight to the saw. It was simple to turn a couple of handles and drill and epoxy the longer screws into them. Or just drill out two dowels to use as handles. It makes changing blades much easier. Like was suggested on the video, get a foot switch and install a wider, smoother table. These are great saws. Listen to Steve about how much wood to cut through. He's the professional. But this scroll saw has the power and ability to cut 1 5/8" dry Pecan. Buy GREAT blades. They don't cost much more. Go slow, wax your blades, replace blades when they first start showing resistance. It took me a full day to cut the 12 2 1/8th" letters on a 14" name place for my son's desk. In short, listen to Steve and just get started with whatever scroll saw you can afford and have fun! P.S. You can get great wood from cabinet makers. They are happy to give you their "cut offs" for the asking.

I've Purchased Me A 16 Inch Ryobi Scroll Saw & I've Already Cut out A Spoonrest. When I Started To Cut It Out I Thought I'd Ruin It. But All & All It Turned Out Great. & After I Got Through With It I Couldnt Belive I Cut Out That Spoonrest. I Was Pretty Proud Of Myself After I Cut It Out.I Also Took My Multitool & Made A Guitar Pick & A Napkin Holder. Now I Want To Make A Couple Of Drinking Coasters & See How They Turn Out I Can't Wait To See The Results.

I love your show. I knew I wonted a hobby with wood but wasn't to sure of what hobby until I saw your blog. I dont have a garage, large work area or storage for large equipment. The first thing I noticed was I didnt need them, GREAT. You are fantastic. I have a disability that keeps me housebound. Your hobby has shown me that doesn't matter. I am now in the process of saving for my first saw. Thankyou very much for all your help. Teabag

Thanks Steve. Very helpful intro for someone used to a jigsaw and jewellers saw. I wasn't sure how much pressure I could put on the tension knob or saw head for changing blades. Your video solved my problem.. and gave me confidence to get rid of the guide too. All your tips and knowledge gratefully received and appreciated.

I just bought one of these saws just because of these videos. I have a harbor freight saw and it's maddeningly difficult to chuck a plain end blade. The blades connect to clamps that aren't connected to the saw - they hang on the upper and lower arms, so you have to hold the bottom clamp on it's arm, while trying to use an allen wrench to unlock the top clamp without dropping it while working the blade through the workpiece and then holding and reclamping with the wrench with the other hand.

Good informative and educational videos. Thanks. Two minor recommendations to your viewers. When you get your tension set where you like it, take a sharpie and make a mark on the tension knob, and on the saw itself as an index mark. Install the blade, turn the knob to the index mark and the tension should be set. For the rough table, sand it with 120 grit sandpaper on a belt sander. Then teflon spray it, then wax it with a candle, or parafin block. Anyway, great videos. I learn a lot from you.

Great series of movies - thanks Steve. Really helped me understand the use of the tool. I can see there are limitations and you are absolutely right - these would be a great beginners tool, and of course they are built to a price but certainly as an entry level machine, more than capable of producing some quality work.

Thank you Steve, I went out and got one of these after seeing this since video i was looking at it anyway and it happened to be on sale a few weeks ago. For the set screws in the chuck, i replaced them both with the adjustment wing screws from a set of harbor freight clamps that were bad. They fit perfectly and I don't need the t wrench any more. The only think wrong so far is that the blower is not very strong. its a lot of sun though. i think i may get an aquarium blower to use instead.

After spending some time setting mine up, I have it running great without noticeable vibration. Out of the box it vibrated some, and worse, made disturbing clacking noises when running at higher RPMs. I think I heard similar noises in this video! I removed the top plastic shroud/hold-down/air blower assembly and ran it again (after putting the tensioning knob back, of course). It ran fine--no clacking! Turns out the top rocker arm had been hitting the two screws used to mount the little air bellows to the cover. The screws were too long, protruding over 1/8" below the bottom of the plastic bellows plate. On top the rocker arm you could see two little marks where it was hitting the ends of the screws. I found two shorter screws and refastened that plate. I also removed the bellows bulb before remounting the shroud, as I suspect that might be causing some vibration. The blower seemed pretty ineffective anyway. If I get tired of blowing away dust I'll likely invest in an aquarium pump, like some others did, and hook that up to the tube with flex air nozzle. I also took off the blade guard/hold-down foot, and flipped its supporting arm up before refastening. I figure I can use it to help attach a little light of some kind. Anyway it runs smoothly now, and this video was a great help in mounting a plain end blade. When I did it, I wedged a little block of wood by the bottom blade clamp to keep it from rotating while I fastened that end first, and then had no problem getting the top blade end clamped. Works great, thanks again!

Thanks for this video. I'm looking into getting this saw mainly to cut balsa wood and thin plywood for building radio control airplanes. Looks like it would suit my needs fine as that is pretty much all I would use it for. I shouldn't need a high-end saw for making straight cuts, and curved cuts such as wing ribs.

I have a Delta Workmaster scroll saw and the blade clamps are terrible (at least mine are). It's almost impossible to get them to clamp tight enough to keep the blade from slipping out. The blade wanders due to loose tension, I think. Do you know if aftermarket clamps are available for this machine? On my machine the clamps are like a clam shell with a cam action lever. I actually bent the lever trying to clamp the blade tight enough for it to not slip out.

Hi Steve. I'm looking at this saw and your videos are very helpful in understanding what I should expect from it. Two questions. The replacement blade that you used in this video, what's it called and which manufacturer? I'd like to grab a couple because I would imagine the stock blades aren't that good. 2nd: When cutting something like that ornament, how do you sand inside the piece? I assume with a fine blade, this may not be necessary but I'm curious. Thanks! I also subscribed.

Vibration is a real problem with entry level saws. It never goes away totally, but it can be reduced by firmly bolting the saw to a heavy strong stand. Mostly you just get used to the vibration. After a while, once you decide you want to keep up with the hobby, you trade up to a better saw.

Not a bad machine, but one thing you did not go over was the type of metal the chuck is made out of. If that chuck is made out of aluminum, with the set screw made out of either aluminum or steel, and the constant screwing and unscrewing, that chuck will wear out in no time, no matter how gentle you are with it. Also, as you talk about the table I could see the marks left by the table flattening finishing tool, and yes it will be rough on your hands over time. Obviously this machine is definitely for beginners, but unless those chucks are made out of steel, it isn't much better than a piece of garbage and a waste of $100 or so dollars !!!

Steve Good Steve Good I'm sorry, no offence intended. I should have started by saying thanks for the video, the instructional content is first class and very useful. This was the second of your videos I watched in a row and by the end the Americanism "I'm going to go ahead and..." was grating a little, I was starting to count the seconds between them. Believe me it's not just KZreadrs but many professional speakers too. I see them on "infomercials" and news reports. It's a peculiarly American thing. Instead of saying something like "I'm going to swap this blade" we get "I'm going to go ahead and swap this blade" 3 extra redundant words. No big deal but to an English ear just so annoying after a short while. I didn't count all the way through but our did say "I'm going to go ahead and..." 9 times in the first 2 minutes. I think you might be an addict. :)
