Getting Started Can Be the Hardest Part - One Hour Better Decluttering

Ойын-сауық

It's another One Hour Better Decluttering Session following the No Mess Decluttering Process so things are only BETTER when we stop. In this session, we talk a lot about how we have to remove certain spaces from the options on where we'd "look for it."

I think Krista demonstrated the difference between where things should be and where she would look for them first. Whenever I put things where they “should” be I can never find them. I love Dana’s method!

Another way to think about donating a cute spatchula is someone else will love it more than I like it. Maybe someone has a heart themed kitchen and that would be perfect for it!

"The bed is not an option"... this! I've read all your books and know all the steps, but this is why I love that you keep making videos, podcasts, etc. Little nuggets and tips that resonate by just saying in a different way! My guest bed is behind me this minute in my office/guest room and piled with random stuff. Now with this saying in my head hopefully, things won't land there as easily ;) thank you, Dana!

The spatula debate was so me. (Although I decorate less for such holidays). But Dana’s books and vids have helped so much with “take it there now”-it never takes as long as you think EXCEPT with my ADHD I get distracted 10 different ways in the process of taking it there. (Yes, in therapy). But I know if I focus and stay on target, taking it right now pays of, especially when I look for it later.

The work you do Dana is so very valuable! I have been working out our home. I had to move to the main floor, for health purposes, so our son who will always be with us was in the main floor room. So he had to move up stairs, the smaller of the two rooms has a queen sized bed, that our son and his family stay in. So the bigger of the two up stairs rooms need ed to be the guest room and the former had to become James room. So every thing has been in a spin for a week. I have used this “where would I look for it first” line to get things moving in the correct order. And TRASH. OUT! It is not done but a whole lot better. Thank you from me!

Thank you for doing these videos Dana. They are extremely helpful. For the past month I’ve been doing two items a day…one donate and one trash. I’m considering trash also as food items that are past their Best By Date. It’s amazing how many items get shoved to the back of the refrigerator or condiments that you don’t realize have expired until you go to use it. This week my plan is to take control of my closet. Lately it has become the spot where I’ve been putting my fabric and quilting projects. I’m on a mission to get it organized and hopefully declutter along the way.

Totally relate to the container situation. I've actually gotten so much done lately, I've started to consolidate containers even more, donating a few & reducing the places where I look for them, because many of our spaces are SO much better, and have plenty of containers at the moment. I was proud of myself yesterday for stopping to look at what containers I already had plus trying to "shop" the house before I decided to buy a new one, for a specific purpose 😊

Thank you ! Watching after having tried a 15 minutes trash-only session with my parents’ shed. The trash pile is still in the shed (because ”letting it stay overnight in the truck” stressed my dad out) but it’ll be gone (and quickly so, because it’s been identified) tomorrow. Dad was reluctant to work on this because there are ”I’m not so sure” items in it, hence the focus on Clear Trash. He’s not quite convinced about what we did yet... but he’ll be tomorrow when it’s all gone (I’m not quite happy with the Pile, mind you, but the energy was best spent making that pile over convincing him it’d be fine to fill the car - we had emptied trash from the attic the day before, and loaded it so it spent the night in the trunk, he hated it. Even though it was emptied today.)

~9:00 OH I NEEDED THAT COMMENT!!! The one about the empty storage bins we save to use (some of) once everything is organized. I have a pile of boxes in my stuffed craft room for that very reason. They would go in the attic until I know which I am keeping but fo rnow they have been impeding my progress in the craft room because I didn't want to take them to the attic and then have to go back up to the attic to get them! HOW CRAZY IS THAT!?!?!? The craft room is the CLOSEST room to the attic in the whole house!! It's literally at the bottom of the attic stairs; it's not like a marathon of miles to go up there and get them. BUT NOW . . . I will--right after this video--I will take those boxes up to the attic, and I'm going to update this post once I do that! THANK YOU!!!!!! 🌿M

💐thank you Dana, 💐Thank you Christa (apologies if spelling error /if names incorrect) 🙏TY For sharing💫 I’ve been following Dana since I saw the container concept video (early 2021.) Dana’s method has been instrumental with the five steps. in helping me on my journey to reduce the amount of items at home. My spare room is at the point of “where would I look for this first” (and the other rooms are at that point now too… for a couple of years it was a lot of “trash “easy and “donate!) 💫This video is very helpful reminder/demonstration how to break things down into giving things a permanent home.🙌 I’m at the point of “3-10yr old procrasta-clutter.” (that use to freeze me for many yrs) “Seeing this video today has inspired me to keep going, giving me a boost to make things better.”

Already, this video is helping me a lot. Due to the way the house we share with friends is laid out, we have the shared spaces like the kitchen, living room and a den/tv room, but everything else has to be kept in our bedrooms. So the husband and i have to use our room for a multitude of things. It's large, fortunately, but it has to hold all our typical bedroom items and then it also has to serve as our home office/computer room, crafting space etc. , which means we have accumulated a huge amount of stuff, and it gets cluttered so quickly that cleaning and organizing gets overwhelming. Most of the other decluttering and organizing videos I have watched want you to do an entire room in a single session, and for me, that is just not possible. This is one of the first times I have felt like I have an option that can actually allow me to make progress within the space but not have to empty the whole room in order to do it. Setting a timer for an hour right now and starting with one simple task of organizing my desk and filing cabinet. Wish me luck!!!

Something happened to my brain while I was sleeping and when I woke up, I was dead in the water…no wind in my sails at all. 😜 So after watching yesterday’s video, I again think it’s a wonderful process and I could do it but just can’t make myself get off my tush and start! I’m giving myself a headache and I want carbs, preferably the frozen chocolate kind or the salty, potassium carrying, crispy kind. Thankfully I don’t have either in the house and can’t make myself get up to go get some. 😝👵🏻

i do need to be honest, I got a recommendation to check out your channel by a redditor at r/simpleliving. I dont regret it. I usually buy way too much stuff that I dont need. It started with aliexpress, amazon etc. I think I have around 10-15 bags in different shapes and sizes. Some are backpacks, some are messenger type bags and so on. Same thing with clothes, there I got most of em as hand-me-downs. I started decluttering my clothes and got rid of at least 60%-70%. I dont know how to let go of my bags yet as I still think some of em have a different usage than others. Also started to donate the stuff that I dont really use nor need (had multiple screwdriver sets, tea sets etc), got rid of my cds and dvds and am now at a point where I dont know how to progress. Given that my actual living space is a mere room, I cant display stuff how I would want to. I cant really get rid of that stuff that i want to display as it still has sentimental value. Also, do you have any tips for documents? I have 3 binders full of em and dont know what to do with them. On another note: Whats your take on downsizing/replacing stuff to increase usage and decrease occupied room? For example, replacing a computer and a tablet with a laptop or replacing a big tv and multimedia station (radio, subwoofee etc) with a smaller one that technically hay everything built in? Thanks in advance
