One of the best videos about composting that I've seen. Saved it for future reference. Already thinking about where my system like that will go. You and Gene are what made RCF what it is and hope the foundation y'all put down will last them for years to come. Thank you from South Georgia!

@@lindagraves3250 gene must be busy, but I think I can explain it. There are 4 points that connect the trash bin to the mixer. Each of these points has three parts: two D-rings you can buy from the hardware store, they almost look like big picture hanging hardware, and a turnbuckle. The turnbuckle is like a big screw with two hooks on the end. The hooks go through the D rings, which are attached, one to the trash bin and one to the mixer, and then the turn buckle is rotated, which tightens the whole thing down. Repeat 3 more times and your bin is attached to the mixer. At home depot, the part number for the d rings is 1001029009 and the part number for the turnbuckle is 203810241. Screwing the D rings right into the plastic of the barrel might be a weak point, so it might be a good idea to either replace the screws with small nuts and bolts, or you might want to place a block of wood on the other side to screw into. Good luck and happy composting!
Gonna miss Gene, he's such a cool dude. Big props to what he does, big asset to farm and community.

Fantastic video... learning so much.. hoping to do this
That is a really smart system. My uncle made something pretty similar back about 30 years ago to separate worms from worm castings. He built a frame and just used an electric motor to run it. It was set on a slope and you put the material in one end and it rolled to the other end. The worm castings would fall out the bottom and the worms would ball up and roll to the end. I like the idea of the cement mixer so you don't have to worry about building the frame and all. I like how he has made it modular too where he can change out the trash cans. Very smart.
Josh & Gene, thanks for the video and instruction. Looking to setup a similar stream to handle the wastes. Wondering what activity can be done to speed up the processes of decomposition. I have often seen agenda in the background so it is nice to get to know him better. Great job...
Gene! Your a genius! Thanks for a great idea 💡

Really appreciate the dedication to the art of farming & growing, and really like the comment he made about dealing with waste is the first thing you have to contend with in any growing. the trash can is a nice backyard engineering idea. I use a larger cement mixer and fill it with leaves then add some softball size stones and short pieces of square pipe or angle iron and run the mixer for about 5 minutes, this pulverizes the leaves into small pieces and breaks down some of the twigs and sticks into smaller pieces. I then put the pulverized leaves into big piles and leave them for a while to compost and further break down. Then I add this mix into the garden as mulch or use it in my potting soil mix and also use them for bedding in my worm boxes. this system eliminates a lot of the work of turning compost several times by hand. .In the garden the pulverized leaves retain moisture, add nutrients to the soil and attract earthworms.
I've had a compost trommel on my "to build" list for a while!

I like your presentation
At home, we do that in buckets, less volume of course, but the process is faster. It takes about two weeks for a bucket to break down especially if the organic matter is chopped before it goes in.

Hey Josh, on the commercial compost you guys bring in both here and at your place, have you guys created a silverware 🍴 pile amongst plastic ware and other stuff that you find in there? I know I’ve had several loads of compost in the past year that really were not finished composting yet and I’m not sure how long it would have to set for the spoons and forks to completely break down, lol. I guess our compost supplier is just trying to increase the iron in our fields, lol!! Do you happen to know who our compost supplier in the area is? I’ve heard that we only have one major commercial supplier in our area so I’m sure my compost comes from the same pile yours does and I think my local landscape supply down the road said they go down towards Raleigh or that direction to get it. Thanks for the info again today josh, you and gene did awesome again as usual and I love all genes hats!! You really scored big time the day you met him for sure. Guys like you and him are getting extremely hard to find anymore

There are only a few. The main place that most people are getting their compost from is Brooks, but there are a few other. We only get 1-2 forks in a load.
