    Yes I agree Paul! I have 2 subs in my system and they blend in so well to the mains. Was a great upgrade for sure.

    Paul, Got my wife a " slim "10 sub (80-50 hertz) Monoprice. To fill in the bottom on her TV shows. Talk about disappearing, with smooth bass. Best, D.

    Subtile sounding subs are lovely. They are not about volume but refinement.

    Indeed, musical subs are fast and tight, like a Formula 1 race car, many cheap home theater subs are flabby and boomy to make up for weakness in the satellite speakers bass response, they smear the details and colour everything, kick drums sound like a ka-thwonk vs a nice fast thud.

    I believe he is referring to rumble which is more of an issue with turntable isolation and resonance than it is a sub woofer problem. I think the letter writer should first invest some time and $ in properly isolating his turntable. Also, often times a turntable with an attached lid/cover will cause rumble/feedback, one of the cheapest experiments to try is removing the lid from your turntable when playing records.

    I have heard the smalles SUB of totem but it sounded great because it sounded like it wasn't on at all. (until they switched it off) It was playing with some of their little Mite speakers (wich i don't like by themselfs) . It must have been a mismatch or a bad sub in the case of this question.

    Hi Paul what would you consider a speaker capable of making a full range sound that don’t need a subwoofer out of curiosity? I have pmc bb5 that are rated to 20hz but do you think I could benefit from a sub even with these?

    I find the problem with subs is that the speaker is as good as it's going to be whatever sub you use if the main speaker doesn't have good upper base then the sub won't add it or take it away most speakers aren't design with a sub in mind I've had a couple of real subs one with remote never found it blended quite perfectly write with one track not quite right with another

    Hi Paul, Thank you for your video. I like it! I do have a question about subs. My setup consists of a NAD C388 amplifier and B&W CM10 s2 speakers (do you like those by the way or B&W in general?). They are the biggest of the series. I hear you say that every setup benefits from a subwoofer, but my B&W's already have 3 woofers, 1 midrange and a tweeter on top. Would that kind of speaker really benefit from a sub for music? My living room is arranged in such a way the speakers have enough space around them, but I do not have the space to also place a big subwoofer (or 2!) there also without getting into a divorce ;) A nice SVS is BIG. I am still curious if I am missing something I cannot fix with proper EQ'ing (if needed). My speakers have plenty of power (I think). Even when playing fairly loud there is little movement from the woofers. Params: -6 dB bij 28 Hz en 50 kHz 45 Hz - 28 kHz ±3 dB I assume you would set the amp to Full Range even with a sub connected? When I set it to the limited range mode the woofers will hardly get a signal anymore. Thank you! Edit: PS. When running Mathaudio RoomEQ with a calibrated UMIK-1 mic, the bass gets really flattened out and is lost then. Is that because low frequencies are hard to measure using a calibrated microphone? Calibrated playback sucks all the life out of the speakers in my case. When playing them just 'as is' they sound very good to me and are able to shake the floor really well when I play a movie. With music it does not, but I think the most music is not ment to shake the floor ;)

    EQing till you get a flat response is helpful as a starting point or for taming room issues, after that, follow that by tuning to your ear and what sounds good. As to weather a sub is useful in your system, you'll have to play some music that has some very low octaves, like this song Lianne la Havas - Midnight kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZYmlk86mgpvVhKg.html If your system can reproduce bass satisfactorily you will feel a nice bass groove that adds weight to the music that's just so satisfying, a system with poor bass response just feels weak, you don't need to shake the floor with bass when playing music, it only needs to be loud enough to fill out the missing stuff. The sub needs to have deep fast response, not flabby or booming which are fine for movies, but music needs that fast response for kick drums and pianos to sound natural, if you can do justice to music, movies will sound great too.

    What about supertweeters? I don't think I'd heard of them until recently and I really wonder if they are useful or just a gimmick. I am speaking of the supertweeters that are built in to speakers.

    I got a pare of those sony sscs3 towers for my surround system and they sound really good, maybe a bit bright but can produce good bass for what they are. for a low priced speaker they are really nice for music when paired with a sub. how much the supertweeter contributes is hard to say. My frequency response isn't as high as a supertweeter.

    aaron phillips High, my preamp is a Musical fidelity C.R. A3 and it connects to my matching power amp. It only has 2 outputs which both go to the power amp (L/R), so can’t see how this could be connected to a sub as no other outputs.

    Contrary to you, in my study, where I am listening to this, I have a Marantz amp, that has a sub out terminal, this is driving a no-name ex-home theatre sub (not using any of its 5 channels & speakers, just the .1 bit) and it works really well. Even it I over do it, I don't hear the sub as such. Not bad for road-kill audio (the equipment source, not the sound quality)

    Hard to say what feedback the person was experiencing, just that it was unwanted. Totem make wonderful speakers, very musical, they have access to Canada's NRC anechoic chamber, possibly the best testing facility in the world for speaker designers, which is why companies like PSB, Mirage, Energy, Totem, can produce such great speakers. I have a set of Mirage FRX-1 on my desktop. www.wifihifi.ca/latestnewsheadlines/celebratingcanadianaudio:totemacoustic.html www.psbspeakers.com/articles/Paul-Barton-at-the-NRC www.miragespeakers.com/about/history/ www.energy-speakers.com/about/history/

    Perhaps its this strange obsession about "neutrality" for audiophiles so they tend to take polished recordings as the golden standard, not a badass & loud live like those were enjoyed in regular concerts&reheasals.

  • @j-man72b72

    @j-man72b72

    The reason people want neutral sounding equipment is so they can hear the recording, not the equipment... In other words: I don't want to listen to speakers, I want to listen to music, I love listening to live music, the dynamics are so much better than pop recordings that have been engineered to death, with compressors and other tricks to maximize volume, the dynamics are flushed down the toilet.
