We do have two Colman stoves a big standing one. That’s is in storage and need to bring it here. We also have a small one that is here and all I need to do is hook up the propane. Just having the electricity just for a few hours was very eye opening. I need to learn to do a lot on my own Incase Deric is not around.

I think it was winter 2002 and we had a doozey storm that knocked the power out. I live in a very rural area of Central Oregon, nearest neighbor can't be seen but only a mile down the road. I ran about 5 miles out of town to my well stocked Mormon friends house for lamp oil (she taught me after how to be prepared) and stopped by another friend to check on her and her toddler and 3 day old baby. Both our husbands are truck drivers and were on the road. She took batteries out of the baby seat for a flashlight but was worried about getting cold because they did not have a wood burning stove. So an hour later they came to my house and we had a big camp out in my living room. 2 moms 5 kids one dog and a memory we will remember forever.

After the power outage last February here in TX, we finally took this seriously and got it together. I already had food storage but we found through the process that we were not prepared. We’re prepared now. We have a home safety review scheduled every quarter where we not only check all our supplies but we go through procedures on how to do things like draining the pool equipment and hooking up the generator. My husband travels for our business so we have to be ready if he’s here or not

We have multiple generators, including one that hooks up to our tractor. The larger ones, run our entire house, and require multiple steps. I asked Chris to write out directions for each one, step by step, (you can even take pictures, of certain buttons and switches, to look for), print everything out and laminate it, and attach to whatever machine you are dealing with. Chris has even recorded, a step by step video for family we have loaned generators to, so they could easily follow along, and safely operate it.

That's great. We are a little technology challenged and have our daughter walk us through solutions to get us going on our PC/Phones and write down the step-by-step method. Never know when we may need the information again. Called her a while ago and explained the problem and heard someone saying sounded just like her parents. Said they could have at least waited until we hung up, but had a laugh also.

@@carolynb1547 I recently found a great tip for that. Simply season your food AFTER cooking. If u cook your food without all of the spices, it won't be so fragrant. If you're constantly cooking fragrant food, then people will know you're still eating well and will be interested to see what you have and possibly take it from you.

Our power was out for 14 hours due to the recent nor’easter. While I had plenty of led lanterns, I had never used my little butane stove. I was amazed at how easy it was to use. It was a good time to see what worked and what did not. Even though it was chilly in the house, I did not try my Mr. Buddy heater. I realized I should get a 12 foot hose and filter so I can use my 20 gallon propane tank. I also realized having all of my small propane bottles in the shed was not a good idea. A small tote near the back porch should house about nine of them.

In MA we just had a Nor'easter and lost power for 3 days. If anyone can I strongly recommend getting a generator. We just had our electric panel updated and bought a generator a few months ago. It was so nice not to worry about the cold food and to have heat. Having canned goods on hand worked out great because we could only use the top of our gas stove without electricity. These days it's good to be prepared for anything.

In South-Africa we have loadshedding. This is basicallly when our local power supplier decides that they are not producing enough power and then our power will be turned off each day or every second day for a certain time. In my town our power (in the zone that we fall under) goes off every second day from 6 - 8.30 at night.

If our power goes out we do have a generator, but we only use it for long emergencies. I could use the burner on the side of my bbq. We also have an outdoor burner aka fish cooker I could cook on. My husband got a Blackstone grill we could use too plus a coalman stove. If we lose power we also lose our water since we are on a well, that part sucks. Thankfully we haven't lost power for more than a few hours in this house. My mom was once out of power for almost 2 wks, she cooked steaks and such in her fireplace using a cast iron skillet. We did loan them our generator but it couldn't run everything in their house. Make sure your chickens have roosts inside the coop especially with winter coming.

I am in Maine and I have seen the low supply of eggs in the stores. Luckily my aunt has chickens so I have a connection! I’m definitely sensing that we are going to be going back into the food shortage in the grocery stores as we head into winter.

We lost power for 8 days in Florida after hurricane Irma. The heat and humidity were worse than the cooking without power 🥵. It definitely showed us what worked and what didn’t. I have since bought a solar shower lol. After being in the heat all day, ice cold water for a shower doesn’t feel as good as you might think 🥶.

You are lucky i live in Hungary where power outage are on a regular basis . And no power also means no water. Since we use a well with pump. So we always have to be sure that we have bottled water to drink, cook and flush the toilet. Luckily we also have a gas stove and head true wood stove and not a central hating systeem that needs electricity

Write the date with a pencil on the eggs so you know each eggs date. Those post it notes could get knocked down and mixed up. The pencil doesn’t hurt the eggs, doesn’t wash off, and it doesn’t leech. Don’t use marker or pen.

I cannot afford a good generator and fortunately the area we live in rarely has outages. We keep extra propane tanks for our gas grill, which has the side burner. So we can cook. Lots of heavy blankets, working on a good wool blanket.

Use your gas grill and cast iron skillets. I picked up a small propane counter top stove for my son and his family as they live in the city. ALWAYS KEEP a couple extra full propane tanks for your gas grill. No gas grill, use your charcoal grill or a fire pit. Bundle up if it’s cold and pretend your winter camping. Have fun with it!! Love your videos! I’m 64 and you have taught me many things! Keep up the great work!! ♥️

Good learning experience for all of us. Our well pump is electric so we lose water when our electricity goes out.since I'm diabetic, I had to use our camper refrigerator to keep my insulin in. I always have all my lanterns, candles and flashlights in one area.

Glad your power came back on. We also have an electric stove, but we did buy a butane single burner. If we needed to use it, our dining table is solid wood, and we would cook on it near the open window. We live in a duplex near several other duplexes and I don't know how a generator would work for us since most of the outside is shared space.

You could possibly use a solar generator, the generator could be indoors (no exhaust) with just the solar panels out on the deck, porch, balcony or patio.

My husband died 5 years ago and I’m just getting my big generator next week. Had an electrician put in a second box so I can run the house and well pump on it. It’s been a steep learning curve (am studying the manual now) but don’t let your husband being alive stop you from taking on that knowledge.

I caught the interview with Denise Jordan and I loved it!! Denise is a great friend and has been a mentor to me!! Also, I didn't realize there was an egg shortage here in Maine! But the stores will randomly not have certain things but then another will. For example, no Del Monte Corn for the longest time at my normal grocery store but then tons of it at Sam's Club! So I am learning to shop around AND stock up!
