I’m an older guy, a musician, and a bit of a music snob. Just wanted to tell you I thought you did a great job with this video. It doesn’t matter at all if you missed something, or rather I agree with everything you said or not. You show a lot of love for the music and really picked some essential things everybody should listen to to find their way into the industrial world. Industrial music fits in so well with the world as it feels right now. It would be great if it had a resurgence in popularity. Thanks for pushing that possibility forward!

Severed Heads is criminally underrated

I kinda got into industrial with listening to the Crow Soundtrack and Nine Inch Nails. I then discovered Joy Division and some of the bands on Wax Trax. Cool to see this becoming more accessible genre.

First industrial I listened to was Nine Inch Nails pretty hate machine. I really liked it so I dug in more

That's funny because Pretty Hate Machine is full with Pop and Rock music. No Industrial there.

I'm one of the old school guys 52. I got into Skinny Puppy around 1985 and Remission their first album was my first introduction to them and I was hooked immediately. I started out in hardcore punk and heavy metal and trash metal but went straight into anything industrial. Got into Ministry next then Front 242 and once I meet other people into the same thing I was into I was introduced to the whole world of all things industrial. Absolutely love Throbbing Gristle and eventually because friends with Genesis P-Orridge and because I was a musician and started playing EDM and industrial style music I eventually meet a guy who was deeply plugged into the scene and we worked together on a couple albums (at the time it was called ESP) and through him I was able to become friends with cEvin Key and Nivek Ogre of Skinny Puppy as well as Dre Robinson aka Data Bomb and I own a keyboard that was his. Industrial music completely shaped who I am now and opened me up to do much differently types of music that I probably otherwise wouldn't have ever heard of before. Bands like The Legendary Pink Dots (of which I'm very good friends with those guys) and Edward Kaspels solo work etc etc.. It really makes me happy to see the younger people getting into these bands and spreading the word of how awesome they are. And behind all of the music are people who are truly great human beings and so passionate about what they do. Keep up the great job of introducing these bands and never stop exploring the world of underground obscure music. There's so much goodness to be found. Brap on...

Skinny Puppy - Too Dark Park was my FIRST album from them. the album that got me hooked to discovery all the other albums. also to note that if you like House like breakdance stuff the newer albums after the "process" have more club hip-hop elements too. i know its like they "sold out" but still maintain the feel of the 90s but they still keep the old fans and some new ones. if you like the horror skinny puppy but like to go to the club for the typical sounds of top 40 rap and pop you might still enjoy the new wave of Skinny Puppy a band that knows how to roll with the current trend in the mainstream but still not as commercial as Nine Inch Nails.

Throbbing Gristle is pretty hard to listen to. They're quite experimental and their music is known for being "anti-music", basically throwing away conventional musical structure in favor of a scary and unsettling vibe. What's funny tho is that Genesis' (lead singer of TG) side project Psychic TV is pretty poppy lol

I became friends with Genesis P-Orridge many many years ago before he/she became ill and he/she was a deeply eccentric (as to be expected) and fascinating person. It hurt me deeply when he/she passed away. They really deserve all the recognition they can get because they helped pave the road for a lot of the awesome bands who found inspiration from them and ran with it.

Chemlab was the bomb. I remember hanging with Jared after their first visit to Portland, and we spoke about literature for like 45 minutes afterwards. An excellent and genuine person. I would have never heard of the wonderful authors Djuna Barnes or Nathaniel West. This was like 1994 at the old Pine Street Theater for the debut album "Burn Out At Hyrdogen Bar!"

My first exposure to Goth, Industrial and Electronic music was all from movie soundtracks from flicks I saw when I was a teenager. Mortal Kombat, Natural Born Killers, Hackers, Strange Days, Lost Highway and if course the Crow are what got me started. Interesting factoid, Cevin Key and Dwayne were friends with Brandon Lee and a Download song was supposed to appear on the soundtrack but ended up on the cutting room floor. The song is on Download's pivotal album Eyes of Stanley Pain and it is called The Outafter. You can also read the dedication to Brandon Lee in the liner notes

If I ever made Hollywood movies or TV stuff, I’d push for that music to be the soundtrack. So many good soundtracks in that era… even for crappy movies!

Once in a while somebody asks me what industrial music is, and I don’t know how to even begin to explain. The looseness and variety of the genre are part of why I love it so much.

No mention of PIG? You need to listen to PIG if you haven't. Raymond Watts is one of the guys that made 90's KMFDM so good. Sinsation and Wrecked are probably his best albums. I consider him to be the best vocalist in the Industrial Rock genre.

Wow, there is so much to respond to here I think I need to go on for several paragraphs. Ultimately I think you've done some incredible justice to the word "Industrial" as far as music goes because all the layers, time periods, expressions in sounds and instruments is so key. It's like you've taken me on a journey of my teens, twenties and beyond. and yes, there is that issue with that one bands' title so they get called "RevCo" at times. Easier on the parents to say that. *wink* btw: While you get used to the character Manservant Hecubus, Thrill Kill Kult's "Devil Bunnies" often reminds me of him these days. What I truly love is I've seen you come from the more metal music interest, so going down the road of industrial is especially mind broadening. And yes, you have helped me on my journey. It's a road I've traveled, but dammit, it's a good road to go down many times! Thanks. ^_^

Please give kudos to whomever it was who took you under their wing and taught you well, grasshopper. Not only was it nicely put but I didn't find myself arguing with you or yelling out loud at the TV like most people do to a football game when their team is losing, which is what I often do when I watch these kinds of pieces on genres of music that is not only near and dear to my heart but very personal in my playlists, life, and history as a DJ for 25 years. I'm always disagreeing with most people's assessments on You Tube. Watching your piece tonight it was quite the opposite where I found myself agreeing with most of it, out loud in fact! That says a lot for a very difficult persnickety old dawg who doesn't want to learn new tricks and is relatively satisfied with my era of the best industrial stuff! I found your uninhibited enthusiasm extremely refreshing too. We used to call people with your energy at the club Perki-goths, despite the catalog you were discussing obviously making you more of a rivet head. It's just that we didn't really have a double clever little punny sarcastic title for that.

A few others I would recommend: A Split Second, H3llbent, Battery, Converter, Bigod 20, Bile, Lost Image, Coil, Chemlab, & if you are wanting some more recent groups, well, there's Grendel, Xentrifuge, Xotox, SITD, Asphyxia, Larva, etc. Its difficult to declutter everything but its good to see someone speaking about Industrial with enthusiasm. However, we aren't metal per say & some of us Rivetheads arent interested in Metal. Great video! Hope to see an updated version of this!!

Great chronology of the Industrial genre. Much appreciated.

I remember in college one of my friends knew the late night DJ at our college radio station. He did "Nine o' Clock Nails" during his shift, and while NIN was playing, he introduced me to Front Line Assembly. From there, I discovered Skinny Puppy and Wumpscut. I didn't get into Ministry until much later in life, but their early stuff is probably my favorite now.

It’s so cool that when I listen to Ministry in a playlist rotation with other diverse artists, Uncle Al’s voice really stands out...sometimes I take for granted how amazingly unique his vocal style is...and its fascinating how he can change his voice around from soft and sultry to shrill and abrasive...Al really deserves a lifetime achievement award from the Grammys & the fucking Oscars 🚨🚨🚨

This is an absolutely fantastic breakdown on a intro and timeline to the genre, probably the most defining genre to my life. I actually have the vinyl edition of Da Ya Think I'm Sexy? by RevCo with KY jelly in the sleeve.

I think the term is so vague nowadays, as it is with most 'labels' given to music. Most people would be surprised to learn that the term 'Industrial music' dates back to the 1940s. Ferd Grofe recorded 'Symphony in steel' in 1937 which used a pneumatic drill and other unusual instruments. The New York Times came up with the actual phrase 'Industrial music genre' in 1972 when referring to his works. He was trying to recreate the atmosphere of a factory and machinery. I just love innovators and people who come up with new and original ideas and who dare to be different. We need people like that more than ever.

Great list! I'm just starting to expand my taste beyond "starter pack" playlists and the more well-known bands (i.e. skinny puppy, ministry, nin, throbbing gristle, front line assembly, etc.) and this was a really good resource for me. Surprised you didn't mention SPK though. The first time I heard "Slogan," I almost blew my goddamn head off, it sounded like pure energy, pure electricity. 10/10 would recommend listening to Auto Dá Fe, it'll blow your mind

thank you I've been trying to get into industrial but didn't know where to start.

I am late to your video, but I have to say you did pretty well in giving an overview into “industrial” music, which is probably the best rubric for this type of music. I won’t second guess your additions (or omissions) but it is a topic that you could make an hour long video. But I did just want to say that, as someone who was there first-hand for it ya done good.

I tried out Throbbing Gristle's DOA recently, and frankly, I love it! Three songs most come to mind and are very memorable. First, I.B.M. was weird and creepy, 70s and 80s computers made some pretty weird sounds so it really deserves this description. Second, Weeping felt like a view into the mind of a someone who was broken. Depressed, desperate, paranoid, and scared, the lyrics have a singsong rambling feel to them, like a desperate and terrified coping mechanism. Third and finally, Hamburger Lady could be described in two words as nightmare inducing. The combination of the unsettling lyrics and the dark and creepy effects used in the song make it feel like, well, you know what, just listen to the song while lying in bed in the middle of the night like I did the first time, you'll see what I'm talking about. Overall, like Killbot said, this album really defines what industrial is. And, just like the industrial genre itself, I love it :) BTW I'd like to recommend Circle of Dust, It's an Industrial metal band inspired by the likes of Skinny Puppy, Front Line Assembly, Ministry and the like. Each album has its own style, but for metalheads, I'd recommend Brainchild, It's got some heavy guitar combined with danceable electronic rhythms, as well as some dark voice samples littered throughout the album. Overall Circle of Dust is a an absolute thrill-ride to listen to. Not to mention that, in most cases, it's all made by one guy, Klayton, who many know from his later project Celldweller. But anyway, IMO I think that COD stands as one of the greats of 90s industrial, and is severely underrated.

Envy!!! FLA is my favourite band and I love everything they have done. I'm so glad you mentioned Caustic Grip too, Hardwired is my favourite album by them! I have to say this is the video that I have been waiting for! Great introduction to all the different Industrial bands, I guess if one could dig in to Throbbing Gristle or Skinny Puppy, they probably could listen to the rest! Cubanate's Barbarossa is a great album, you should check it out if you haven't. Oh yea...Calling ov the Dead is one sick album!!! Cheers! :)

I'll check it out. And yeah, I got into them a month ago by putting their 90s CDs on hold at the library (those were the only ones available). Loved TNI so much that I got the vinyl, friggin rare though. Hard Wired is probably next on the vinyl list. TNI reminds me so much of the Earthworm Jim (Genesis) soundtrack, and I played that religiously as a kid, so the whole time I'm thinking of clubbing AND beating the crap out of Peter Puppy. Lol.

Honestly, I'd recommend listening to Circle of Dust (Brainchild & Self-Titled & Machines of Our Disgrace) as an introduction album for Industrial Metal.

My introduction to industrial was NIN pretty hate machine, great album! Of course once I heard it I had to know where this all cane from which led me to skinny Puppy last right in 1992, when I was 12. I instantly fell in love with Skinny puppy and bought everything they put out. Skinny Puppy to me is the pinnacle to industrial music, they do it all, CEvin Key is the synth master!!!

Yes if I had to put a single band at the top of my list it would no doubt be Skinny Puppy. I became friends with them many many years ago and have been fortunate enough to hangout with them many times. I blazed cEvin Key and Dre Robinson out after a show once with some OG Kush I grew and it was a great time. That's what is really cool about many of these bands is how easy it is to connect personally with the members of the bands. I can't even count how many times I've been able to hangout with Edward Kaspel of The Legendary Pink Dots.

I started out with industrial and goth before extreme metal so it's nice to see it acknowledged. You're also the only person I've ever seen who has farstucker.

I'd recommend some more noise/experimental stuff if you're interested in it: Ramleh - Hole in the Heart Final (Justin Broadrick industrial/ambient solo project) P.H.O.B.O.S. - Modern Industrial Metal Atrax Morgue - Italian experimental project Bizarre Uproar - Noise/Power electronics stuff-os Malformed Earthborn - Supergroup, gritty stuff. Puissance - Martial Industrial SPK - Old school industrial Nurse with wound - Creepy ambient stuff and associated with the likes of Current 93 and Death in June. Cop Shoot Cop - Noise rock with industrial elements, really nice and underrated band. Cows - Taint Pluribus Unum - killer album, not industrial though. Just a few ones, you may know'em already haha, just wanted to share them if you don't. I'm really glad I found your channel, wish you had more views, I love Skinny Puppy and Dystopia too!

Thanks for the upload, love the video, I'm currently in the process of composing an industrial rock influenced album and i was curious where you consider it would stand between the fine line of industrial genres. Happy to shoot some demos through to you if you're ever interested in having a quick listen and see what you can make of it (as a genre) and who you think it is influenced by! :)

This video is amazing. I would also recommend 16Volt, Filter, Killing Joke, Download, Gravity Kills, and Ohgr's solo work (Skinny Puppy)

I'm a huge fan of Front 242, Skinny Puppy, and Front Line Assembly but don't know enough about their origin nor how to explain to a friend why I think he should give them a shot as they're hard to get into first listen. This video does an amazing job with both. I think I'll give Throbbing Gristle a shot soon. :)

Awesome video. I did it backwards, listening to Skinny Puppy for over 10 years desensitized me enough to finally watch all those horror movies.

My first real exposure to industrial was when looking around a Great Escape with my dad and he spotted a KE*A*H** cd. He got it and we listened to it in the car on the way home.

Honestly i think they are great but i only like a few songs. Republica also another one of those bands in that Era where they only made like 2 good songs.

I just listened to NIHIL and XTORT Yesterday, so damn good!!!

A couple of bands I'd like to see you mention that were big for me. Wumpscut (especially Bunker Gate 7, Music For A Slaughtering Tribe and Embryo Dead) and many albums by Project Pitchfork. Android Lust also deserves an honorable mention since she is one of the few female driven industrial bands out there.
