UPDATE: many of the comments are people disagreeing with the RO's decision. I just have to say, it was all for the best because it made me go on very very carefully in the following months. It was a teachable moment I will never forget :) and the lesson may have spared me a more disastrous accident had it not happened at all. Who knows? If it had happened to someone else maybe they never would have come back to shoot from embarrassment or discouragement, but I'm me, and Im sure this lesson was MEANT for me. So cut the RO a break will ya? :)
It's been exactly 1 year since my very first shooting lesson, so I decided to make a little video... :D facing the camera for once... and share my most memorable moment from the year --getting disqualified! I started competing 6 months ago, and have gone from being an"Unclassified" shooter to a "C" rank shooter. I'm having so much fun, and I feel like I have so much more to look forward too! Thanks for being a part of my journey.

Jessica, I shot USPSA for over 20 years and was an RO and Match director for most of that time. An RO should balance a teachable moment with the letter of the law with new shooters, not come down hard on someone brand new to the sport in a situation in which safety was not severely compromised. Otherwise new shooters get chased from the sport and that is a shame.

a4skyhawkdriver When I started IPSC shooting 20 years back, I was taught that the three most important things in IPSC are: Safety, safety and safety! So when I went to my first IPSC match I concentrated on following all rules to the letter and I was not to concerned about my performance as a shooter. Better results came over time with more training, but from day 1 the safe and correct handling of my gun was my main concern. And as a result of that I was never disqualified. I think the DQ was correct. It may be one thing to be absent-minded and just touch the gun, but taking it out before being asked to make ready justifies IMO a DQ. Maybe I take this more serious because I live (and shoot) in Germany and we have restrictive gun laws and IPSC is not well liked by the authorities.

yeah.. gun games.. never really liked em except informal ones like.. "see that dirt clod? that one about 60 yards out? can you hit that?" there would be 4 or 5 of us. a jack would take off running across our field of view.. everyone that did not have a gun in their hand would draw from holster and shoot. you never shot if someone was in front of you.. and you never moved in front of someone. simple stuff really.

i agree ...she is true blue and square! it refers to engineering well manufactured parts fit every time....
Like my match director usually says, "there are 2 types of shooters; those that have been disqualified, and those that haven't been disqualified YET."
It's too bad the RO didn't get you stopped before the actual draw, considering it was your first match. We try to interact a lot with new shooters to prevent that from happening-and I keep my hand ready to stop them from drawing before time or from swinging around too far (180). There is so much to think about when you start out, and everyone is nervous. Good for you for keep going no back. I have seen guys get DQ'd that never come back to the range. On the lighter side-I had to DQ my husband a few months ago, then ride home with him. It was a quiet ride.
Thank you for so openly sharing about that moment! That is the epitome of bravery and Grace... Bravo!
Every Dad who supports his daughter in any type of an event understands what you went through! keep up the great training and sharing that young women are great shooting competitors. Great job!
Jessica, they had no idea what a great person you are! You showed everyone, without a strain, you’r beautiful talent. Most times it’s slow to realize that you are far ahead of the curve!! Thank you Jessica for another good video!
Good that you stayed with your squad and help out. thanks for sharing!
I'm sorry to hear that. I've worked as an RO at several local matches and I had to do the same to a competitor, only his mistake came at the last stage of the match. We had to DQ him for turning around with his weapon still in his hand. In all his excitement he wanted to show he'd run out of ammo and he did so on the last target. The slide was locked back, but he was pointed in the wrong direction. Thanks for sharing your experience with us.
Jessica thank you for sharing and for persevering through the disappointment and the stink, rock on my sister🙏🏾
That was an awesome description of how everyone feels in a situation like that when someone starts crying. Got a kick out of that.
hahahaha Thanks for always helping me and being a great friend! :)
Hello, Jessica! I just wanted to say thanks for making this video and I'm glad you can laugh about what happened! This past month, I started practicing for competition at a place called OGRE's Den Airsoft (OGRE stands for Oregon Gun Racing Enthusiasts). I'm going to my first USPSA match this Sunday and I'm totally going to be thinking about this video and the valuable moral of your story: wait for the "make ready"!!
I am so glad you recovered very well!!!!
My eight year old daughter is crazy for shooting right now, and I'm going to have her watch this video when she gets frustrated with it. Thanks, Jessica.
You are so Awesome! Every beginning competitor should watch this and realize its gonna be OK! Safety rules are the most important thing and should be enforced with absolute unbending authority, but we can learn and be safer when we make the mistake. Thanks for you great humility and sharing!
Happy 1 year anniversary. Here's to many more and your continued successes! Cheers :)
You go girl! Keep on Keepin on! We learn from our mistakes and make good on them. Glad to see your not discouraged or giving up. Nobody likes a quitter! Might I add that... If your smile was sunshine it would beam for a million miles. Stay the course and train as much as possible. gottago4now! Cheers
I am shooting my first ever match tomorrow. I am a bit nervous and just hoping I don't have this happen on my first match. Glad you bounced back :-)
Great story. Being a 52 year old male I'm fairly certain I wouldn't have gotten the same kind of support if I cried after a dq.
Thanks for sharing. I think it shows pretty good haw people stick together and want to help. In Germany people jest walk past you pretending you're not there, or say something like "if you want to cry go home" without stopping, making an angry face. Thumbs up for you guys.
Oh my gosh...that was sooooo funny. Now THAT was a great "1st DQ" video. Your honesty is refrezhing.
Fun to see your expressions, the other side of pure focus.
Jessica, you're hilarious. I wish my matches had more fun people like you. They do, though, but we need more fun people! I don't take competition that seriously; you can see it in my vids, but I can understand your frustration and you handled it very well. The best thing to do after a DQ is to go help out, hang out, and learn. You already did! :)
Thank you very much for this comment! :) Made my day.

in the military i worked range central ....we did everything from new soldier training to government official going to vietnam. overseeing an Army Ranger qualifying annually is far different from a basic soldier going to the range to become familiar with the equipment. missing a minor step is one thing missing a major one is quite another. recovering without being told or catching a mistake that was not caught is also another. jumping the starter call is a reason to point somebody but unless you turned and pointed the gun at the starter it is NOT reason for disqual. the starter was wrong! starter should halt the shooter are you fine, just nervous...relax restart! wait for my command good luck !!! done! a teaching moment not a need to conquer the world... i enjoy your shot videos young lady go get them....i like you laughing at crying! I raced mx and desert for years i cryed before each start. I was laughed at until they found out why...it helps balance your nervous system.
I don't think I know anyone who has not DQ'd. You are doing great and you took the lesson and moved forward BIG TIME. :-)
This is a great story! Thanks for sharing.
I'm laughing to tears watching this video, I would have given you a hug lol. Had to subscribe... much love Andrew
The most important thing you did was you didn't storm off, you hung around (I hoping you helped patch targets) and supported your fellow competitors. Nice one :) I have DQ'd a few shooters for doing exactly the same thing (Drawing, loading and making ready before being told to.), some have thrown their toys out of the pram and gone off in a strop, but the ones of good character always stay and help out with the rest of the comp. Nice one.
I can tell from your demeanor that you've had a blast doing this
I totally feel for you. I took a class a few weeks ago and totally felt like I wasn’t good enough to pass the qual. Took the student and instructor back to back. Passed the student class by the skin of my teeth, practiced live fire afterwards and dialed everything in and reinforced it with hours on the mantis. Did the instructor class and all the warm up exercises did great on. Didn’t get a single shot outside the prime scoring a&c scoring area. First shot in the actual qual for the class, I had a flier that landed outside the D for an instant DQ. Meanwhile I traveled 500 miles and paid thousands for this class. So embarrassing to be the first failure in the class. But thankfully I got a second chance and passed the second time around with a 97 out of 100. Pretty amazing when you can take a failure and make it a driver to learn and grow.
Hearing your story made me feel less alone about my first time. I also got DQed! It's very upsetting!
What a great story, thanks for sharing.
Funny, sweet, honest, vulnerable, intelligent, beautiful. Wow Jess! You're something!
you have a great personality, keep up the great work.
Please continue the sport. Glad you got over it
It was awesome meeting you at area 6 this weekend!

Jessica, you’ve made me crack up! Thank you...
Great personality! It really comes through here. Show it off some more in some trick shot vids or reviews. Keep knockin' that steel down. I'm HOOKed :)
Thanks! :) And good luck with your match!
I just shot my first ever IDPA match last Sunday and I did so badly that I sobbed my face off in between rounds and then was bawling all the way home.😂 I've been putting 2 hours a day, 3-4 days a week in at the range for the past 3 months, and ill be shooting my first USPSA match this weekend. I was telling my mom how much you inspire me. Maybe someday I'll be a lot better and can make a video like this. ❤
I know this is an old video but I honestly feel that this would of been a teaching moment. I’ve been dq’d for the same thing and the RO was demeaning to me but that was a teachable moment for me also. As a RO you need to look at the bigger picture.
we had 5 DQ's in our last match... Thanks for sharing your story !

@@paulc3517 and that changes what? So you think somebody cant learn from it!! it isnt applicable !! no need for it!! nobody has been DGed since that time!! or you enjoy being a pain in the ass ...i care it was 7 years ago i can read.... oh im sorry they dont use DQ anymore they just shoot you in the head today.... that is what is so funny well lets all LOL.... dont shoot your foot!
I came here from a Taran Butler video only to find this little gem. Oh wow, nobody and I do mean nobody should ever cry in a porta potty alone on a steaming hot day. That totally sucks, but that is a freaking hilarious story.
Don't feel bad, I got disqualified on my first IDPA match for having my finger inside the trigger guard and like you I had no idea what happened. But then I practiced for a solid month keeping my finger out of the guard. Shit happens Jessica, keep on trucking!!!
It happens. You're awesome, keep it up and keep competing. I wish I could shoot competition... Never give up ! You'll be great !
You definitely need to make more videos of shooting!
If it makes you feel any better, my first match didnt go so good either, i had helped out at the action target range for a couple of months, and two of the better competitors at our range took me under the wing and taught me the ropes, the night before i decided to heed the advise given me and break down and clean my 1911, got it all back together, went to and started the match, with many friends and family present, pulled the trigger only to hear, click, my firing pin was back home on the bench
We know now how the Legend was Born.
; ) Great story.Wishing you continued success in the sport.
You are breath taking. Sorry to hear you got DQ.
Funny video. I have never been to a comp let alone compete. Keep shooting.
I remember that day! I never knew you cried!!! :-( You're doing great now. There are those who have been DQUED, and those that will. BTW you left out the part where you thought you just couldn't shoot that stage. Then you said," I'M DISQUALIFIED FROM THE WHOLE MATCH!!!!!???????" Kinda funny when you said it. Keep it up. :-)
you made me laugh...keep'em coming!
Wow, that was quick! Thank you! :)
dang!!! you a fast learner.... great job
Glad you were able to shake that DQ off and keep shooting!
Great video!
Thanks for sharing that story, I hope it gets back to the RO. Those kind of calls and ROs, drive people away, not instill safer gun handling and promote the sport in my opinion. I've had to DQ shooters and try to make it a positive, learning experience.
The "Ugly cry" .... Never heard that before. Just never give up. I do not even know you. But I am proud of you. You are a strong person.
Brave girl and honest, I don't know you but I'm very proud of you Don't ever give up, you'll get there where you want to be, I'm sure. If only you are in NJ, I have time to bring you to our club and practice BTW, you did not mention what pistol you were using.
Such a great story haha. You should make some more vlogs. Hope you're well.
Great content thanks for sharing.
I had my first uspsa match today and I also got DQ''ed before I fired a shot. I was running to the first target with my shotgun in hand, when my pistol jumped out of the holster and fell on the floor. It was one of the most embarrassing moments of my life, so I understand how your emotions can overwhelm you. Not to mention the soul crushing reality that I just wasted my money and then the 2 hour drive of shame back home.
Hi Jess! I shared this Vid with a new girl shooter that had a foPa on the range today to help her feel better..:) Just can't stop laughing at this video! Too Cute!

Jessica, I just shot my first match on Thursday night and while trying to clear the gun at the end of the course I broke the 90° plane and got disqualified on my very first match so I feel what you're saying. But I'll be back next week.
Thanx for sharing :) I havent dq:ed yet but i suppose it will happen some day.
beautiful.
Hi Jessica!! You are cute and have a fun laugh!! Love from France!!
Haha I'm not sure whether I should feel better or worse after watching this. My last trip to the range, one of the guys there who does USPSA matches suggested I get into it, and I've been heavily considering it. I keep thinking, "I'm gonna make a fool of myself. I don't what to do, how to do it, when to do it. And then I'm gonna be DQ'd."
This video earned my sub!
I like how you tell your story your so amazingly funny
Am from southern California. Am thinking joining 3-gun events later this year or soon. It'll be my first gun competition and definitely Amateur. I still lacked shotgun. So in the meantime, just practicing all the basics I currently have then will join some training classes.
Small scrape on the knees. Get back in the game and keep up the awesome shooting! Hope you have footage from Costa's class to share!
Great you can have a good laughs on your little mistake! You can only live & learn. X
This video made me crack up. I hope that doesn't mean I'm a bad person.
I joined an IDPA match years ago and made mistakes that I should have been disqualified in but the RO let me move on. In retrospect and to preserve the safety principles of the sport I ought to have been disqualified... in the future I'd disqualify my self just to keep the standards of the sport and keep me sharp.
I had a similar experience with Judo except it was a workshop and so we were supposed to potentially make mistakes.
you ROCK! forget about the DQ!

You will dq!!!! You've dq'd when you thought you wouldn't ever dq! You will dq!
can you show the video how you get dq?
It's interesting. The rules are rules and safety is safety. But considering the circumstances I think you sould have been allowed to shoot the following stages. A muzzle flash is one thing, but getting a little ahead if the R/O as a newbee is clearly another. I'm glad you stuck with it!
Welcome to the club. It's just a learning experience. Take from there and move on
yes most people get DQ'ed at some point (me too x3 in 20+yrs). you have recovered well. I was RO at one of my student's first match. I had to DQ him. oh boy!
Hate to post the obvious, which I'm sure you get repeatedly, but you are amazingly pretty! Plus you shoot. Yada Yada. :-) Your personality is just as amazing from what I've seen so far. Keep up the great work! Be safe, and keep posting videos! After that story, I had to subscribe! Lol
i want to start competing in uspsa matches too..
it happens.....lesson learned
Wow. So sorry to hear that! At least from this point on you'll never do that again! haha. You're a great shooter! Keep posting videos...
Its ok I live in Iowa and went to MI and I got dq on the second stage..
You seem very sweet. As they say, there are two types of shooters: those who have been disqualified and those who have not. Honestly, your reaction was totally normal, and you get cool points for sticking around to help out with setting and pasting targets with your squad. You got beaten on pretty hard for this video, but I think it took (balls?) to share this experience publicly. ~Kita Stoeger
I got to my 4th IDPA match before my first DQ. Gotta watch that trigger finger....
Beautiful
Holly shit lady, you crack me up.. Good job :)
If that's the worst thing I ever saw as a RO I would have given a warning to a new shooter.
I am an RO. There was no safety violation. The gun was not even loaded. I stern warning would had suffice. There is the rules and tithe spirit of it. That was uncalled for, specially for a new shooter.
You came back with a vengeance..That is what counts! :-)
I would like to share the range with you some day with my SIG 226 X Fire we can shoot all day!!!
We learn from our mistakes cuzz, that's OK.
Could you please post more videos like these where you talk. You have a very pleasant personality
This is the only crying video I've ever given a Like. :) Honestly, I don't think they should have DQ'ed you for a first match. We tend to take it easy on the newbies.
