Getting Close to Whitetails | Hunting From The Ground

Спорт

Tom Alford is hunting in Wisconsin for opening weekend and he's trying something risky! Run and gun whitetail hunting is hard enough with a bow...but throw in self-filming and it's nearly impossible!

    Been hunting from the ground with a bow for many years now. Killed my biggest buck (148" P&Y 4x4) at 7 yards sitting in some cedars with a bow in 2014. Here are a few of the lessons I've learned that have helped me and my buddies a lot. 1. wind is your enemy. 2. camo your face properly. 3. when looking at deer close one eye (old indian trick that actually works). 4. keep having fun Tom! I'll look forward to watching you get a big one!

    What does closing one eye do?

  • @Kacaaaw

    @Kacaaaw

    @@CoryFalde175 a face is naturally less recognizable if there is 1 eye visible vs 2. Like humans, most medium-larger land mammals have a knack for spotting faces. 1 eye fights against that natural ability of them in spotting faces/spotting danger.

    6 years ago I started hunting from the ground. Play the wind an opens up a lot more areas to hunt. 1st year I got a doe after gun season. Since then I learned a few things. I have taken an 11 pointer, 14 pointer, 8 pointer, several does and 4 turkeys. When I was a young lad my dad hunted off 8 foot wooden step ladder, there was nothing else. No camo. I love it. I have taken more deer from the ground

    Love the ghillie suit brother. For hunting that’s way more than sufficient I’ve done similar things in the past with artificial plants.

    the field edge is enticing but thats exactly when the deer are on their most alert, when they hit the open. i stand futher back in the cover. standing gives me a comfortable 360 degree shot , something sitting or a climber doesn't

    I've done a lot of hunting from the ground and it can be very exciting but also very hard and frustrating. The few things that I noticed from watching this video is that you need to give yourself a little more cover first. Second you need to move slower and do not draw your bow unless the deer is looking the other direction. Movement is way more critical than when in a tree stand. That one doe saw you just rotating the camera. Good luck this season and have fun.

    I know this video is a few years old but I really enjoyed it. That is a beautiful place that you are hunting. I wonder if maybe the artificial plants are giving of some UV . You are well concealed but they are picking you up easily.

    I live hunting from the ground but I like to be in more cover than what you were in at that time. Also Zach from the hunting public is VERY good at ground hunting, seems to be like Jim burnworth when I used to watch his shows type. Who’s known for telling the camera guy ‘stay here’ then sneaks in and shoots them at 20 yards. Love ground hunting myself. Gotta get into a spot where they’re coming through, but in tight cover where you might only have a max of 35 yards to shoot to seems to work best for me.

    Facts, travel corridors, find some Galen trees or ditch that moves them in towards a path of least resistance, sorta funnel them, it will bring them in super close, but you be hidden, I like finding funnel inside of a funnel, but wind is most important, got to have the wind rite, you got to know that wind is rite, had to repeat that one, you ain’t gona fool that nose

    Great footage! Your Arrow was knocked upside down so probably a good thing you didn’t get a shot because your green fletch probably would’ve made contact with your bow causing a bad shot or complete miss. Maybe next time

My Second button buck at 47yards 18feet in my tree stand left handed which I am right handed it was a awesome shot left handed , but the beginning of the story is I was sitting door four hours and didn't see any movement I came down and was putting attracted on my wicks nose high when I got busted from two doe good size and never had my crossbow in hand

    Not for nothing but if you were in a ground blind you would of gotten a shot at that buck. I hunt with a ground blind I had a small buck wanting to enter the dam thing so I stuck my hand out one of the windows and I hit him with my hand so he would stop. He jumped so hi I laughed my ass off.
