I agree. I mean really. All these bootcamps make everyone perform grueling exercises whereas they won't have to perform them anymore after completing basic training. Will a guy that joins the Navy or the Air Force for the training to fly a Stealth Bomber actually need to do pushups when he begins learning how to fly a jet? Back in 1983 I wanted a career in the Navy. They said my ASVAB test score was so high they wanted me in the Nuclear Power Program. Why in the world would I have to go through Basic Training if I'm going to work on a nuclear powered submarine or aircraft carrier?

@@chippiepoi Thank you! This may seem like a tangent, but one of the things I keep in my head is my own little drill sergeant. This mindset is a bit new for me because I actually attained it from a crippling failure and am still getting used to it. Earlier this year, I was supposed to get a procedure done that I always wanted to get, but I chickened out last second due to mortal fear. Ever since then, I’ve been in a rabbit hole about the shortness and fragility of life, which inspired the seeds of a “just do it” mindset. I treat myself with empathy to acknowledge my fear and urgency to acknowledge the need to get it done. There’s a scared little kid inside me who needs me to stand up for him, because no one else would.

SOF/SF selection courses usually have pretty chill instructors. They see no reason to yell at you, they don’t give a fuck if you make it or not, they have nobody telling them “x amount of troops need to pass this course, you need to motivate them to get through it” like they do in basic. And them yelling just gives you motivation to move or do something, they expect you to need no motivation for anything. @jonb7470 They say it's for Gas maks, but that has already been debunked. Your beard doesn't interfere with your gas mask. A beard also protects you from certain bacteria as well. It's a plus to have because you blend in with the locals. SF soldiers have beards to blend in the locals, Green berets particularly let their hair grow and beards, some Seals too. But depends on your battalion, I've met a few rangers who have beards and some who don't. But typically rangers don't. Some snipers do have beards, and other MOS (Jobs) and 11 bravo infantry men can't keep beards unless they have a religious accommodation or medical.

For the people complaining about bad form on those push-ups: Try and do 20 eight counts, 20 leg lifts, 20 mason twists, and 20 in and outs, and then do push-ups as fast as possible all the while somebody is telling you to go faster. If you can, good for you. But keep in mind if you break and fall to the floor you not only have to start the whole beating over for yourself, but for everyone else. My time in basic the beatings would take a minimum of 20 minutes and up to an hour and a half without rest. When you're that tired you don't care about form.

@@korcommander I can understand that. Though it is important to stay fit in the navy, our lives aren't as much hindered by a little bit of weight considering we're on a boat doing jobs that mostly don't rely on staying fit. It's a matter of life or death for someone to be in shape for the marines or army, thus stricter enforcement on form. The navy mainly cares about being able to run from my experience. Each branches basic training probably has something that it harps on.

@@MichaelCorleone562sounds like BS I graduated from BMT in 2018 and the MTIs could 100 percent make you workout. They were limited to three “reprimands” a day aka making you do strength workouts and the preferred weapon of choice was burpees. Now was it hard? No I personally thought it was way too easy and would beg my instructors to give us more time to do runs and pull-ups, I would also do hundreds of push-ups and squats a day to try and keep in shape for AFSOF. But even if basic was a cake walk I don’t believe for one second they “couldn’t make you do push-ups” basic training is you meeting the bare minimum, and anyone who struggles in basic is up for a rude awakening. Unlike SOF pipelines your instructors want you to pass and have no intention of kicking you out all of the “scare tactics” are there to break the kids individual tendencies and teach them to not overthink. If you think some guy raising his voice at you is scary then the idea of doing water confidence drills till you pass out and then being forced to get right back in the pool would be a living hell for most people. Even the marines who like to pretend their basic made them a badass were simply put through the bare minimum. And the funny thing is if you talk to most SOF vets they have fond memories of their pipelines. It wasn’t nearly as bad as combat and you realize that having an instructor who doesn’t want to actively kill you doesn’t compare to an enemy who wants you and your men dead and will try to do anything in their power to get it done even using women and children as tools for that objective. Basic is a joke and if you don’t see it as a vacation then combat will make a cripple of you.
