Getting a Port Placed for Chemotherapy

What is a port, why do I need one, and what can I expect when I get it placed? I answer these questions and more to hopefully help ease your anxiety a little around getting one put in your body. Mine was placed in preparation of me receiving 8 rounds of chemotherapy to treat Stage 3 Colorectal Cancer that had invaded my body.

It's so amusing to hear someone else talk about what I went through too. I didn't, and haven't, had anybody to talk to that has experienced it even though so many people get cancer. It was strange going through all of these medical procedures and treatments and not have anybody to talk to that could relate; probably because I was fairly young. And for whom it may concern, I was awake when my port was installed. I didn't feel a thing. And I recommend the numbing cream.

Getting a port made things so much easier. By my 3rd infusion, they ran out of veins. Dacarbazine actually burned as it went in my vein despite being slowed down 3x and diluted 1:2. With the port I was in and out

My port was placed by an Interventional Radiologist using a fluoroscope to insure proper placement. I received conscious sedation (Versed and Fentanyl) not full anesthesia. I could feel pressure on my chest and manipulation but no pain. I never used the Lidocaine cream when I had port draws or chemo. The pain from the insertion of the needle into the port was not that high, at least for me. But certainly use the Lidocaine if you want a pain-free experience. I had chemo and radiation before surgery. The port was never used for anything but blood draws and chemo. For my surgeries a standard IV was placed in my arm. I had the port removed by an Interventional Radiologist again with conscious sedation. Not as much post-op shoulder pain for removal as experienced with the original placement. The port was removed after it was determined my radiation, chemo and surgery had yielded good results and I probably was not going to require any additional chemo. Also you do need to get a Heparin flush of the port every 4-6 weeks if it’s unused to prevent it from clotting shut.

I've had a port for over 15 years (yes! Same port! It has lasted that long! I am VERY BLESSED that it has lasted that long; they usually do not). I had mine put in for non cancer related issues, however. I am an EXTREMELY difficult stick and was having to have multiple IVs/mo due to a Migraine Disorder. My doc would call in orders either to our local ER or the Day Center. Finally, the nurses there, after having to put an IV in my neck, called my doc and told her, "This girl needs a port!"! She then referred me to a surgeon who put my port in. This port has been a God Send! Easy access and NO DAMNED PAIN FROM MULTIPLE NEEDLES! I NEVER feel the needle going in (well, unless someone tries to stick it in the wrong place. That happens sometimes since my port is lower placed than most are as it wasn't put in due to breast cancer, it doesn't happen a whole lot tho). I've never used or even needed to use lidocaine.

I had a double mastectomy years ago but unfortunately it came back so now I'm having a port entered and will undergo chemo then radiation. I already had surgery to remove the mass since I have breast implants and that was the best way to get everything to a lab to determine what kind of breast cancer I have. Hey...your videos and amazing detail of everything that happened are great and helpful. I was diagnosed with stage 3 rectal cancer about 2 months ago. Was in hospital for almost 3 weeks where I ended up with surgery for total blockage from the rectal mass. I now have a ileostomy and mucus stoma. Been home from hospital for about 2 weeks now and been eating and getting my strength back...normal weight is 170 lbs...I'm now 120 lbs so I lost alot of weight and havent had anything to eat for about a month. The pain I also went through was horrible...about a constant 8 to 9. It was due to a perforation in my colon where the cancer was which caused an abscess that went into my hip muscle. I could not walk about a week before getting admitted into the hospital. Now pain has since gone and can walk now🙏. Getting my port this tues and in about two weeks starting chemo which I cant wait for...I just want to beat this cancer and get back to normal!!! I have many questions I could ask but most important is my little guy. My son is 2 years and 5 months and my question to you would be did you have to stay away the days you were recieving chemo due to being immunocompromised? My little guy is in day care so there is alot of germs coming from those places. Just want to thank you for posting all your videos and letting us into your life and experiences. You are a true inspiration to me and like me seem like a very positive person. Glad to see you survived and made it through this crap called cancer!! If you ever need any help or know anyone that might I will be here to help. Once I beat all this it will be my lifes mission to help anyone going through cancer and to keep them positive and strong. Live life to the fullest and enjoy every day no matter how bad it may be!! Thank you... chris from long island ny🙂

My husband is undergoing chemo and his veins are getting hard. They said it had nothing to do with the meds but I read a medical journal that it can cause superficial thrombophlebitis. He’s got 4 more treatments and I’m wondering if it’s to late to mention. I’m so happy your getting great care. They didn’t do or say a lot of what you’ve described. But they cut out the cisplatin and replaced it with something else I can’t remember off hand, but we went to his oncologist this morning and they said he only had 4 more treatments left (two cycles, day one of three starts tomorrow) and so a port really isn’t needed. But they suggested a different type maybe if he has issues tomorrow, like a catheter that is inserted and removed after the infusion. They said that the VTP isn’t life threatening or anything so we shouldn’t worry. Thank you so much for your reply!!! Hope you and yours is well.

I ask because I'm going to try to prevent the Interventional Radiologist from butchering me the way the surgeon did during my 5/29 total hysterectomy. 8 weeks later & the 6.5" vertical scar is uncomfortable - bordering on painful. Further, some portions of the incision have become keloid type scars while others are hypertrophic but trying to achieve keloid status.

I had blood clots when they put my port, my left side neck and face swollen and a lots of pain. When I went to the emergency after doing x-ray they said I don’t have nothing it could be my wisdom tooth who cause all this pain so they just sent me home. The swollen got bigger and the pain worsens more and more so I had to call the doctor who put the port guest what he said that he never had kind of problem and suggested that I go to the emergency. So since my next appointment with my oncologist were the next day I just hold in the pain and wait. When I appeared to the appointment the nurse rush me to do chemotherapy which i refused until I see the doctor. She told me that I can’t see the doctor because I’m not scheduled. I refused chemotherapy and I asked the doctor because I had port complications. When the doc came she looked at my port she said that I’m fine and no need to worry. I was choked for her response and she just let me went home with the swollen and the pain that I never had before. The same day my friends visited me and see how I’m suffering they suggested that I go different hospital. My husband took me the same day, when I explained my condition they took me inside right a way. Nurse called the doctor and they gave me a bad. After all test they found that I had blood clots and my blood is contaminated they have to put me in medications in the IV. And doctors said if I waited a day it can be worse. They told me god I had to follow my gut when I explained to them all what happened to me. I’m telling my story to let you know don’t wait if you feel something wrong each of us know their body more than anybody else’s. I’m not kind of person who like hospital but the same day I had the port I felt something wrong I had a lots of pain. When I asked the nurse he said that normal and just take pain killers and you will be fine.

I'd be interested in knowing when you were diagnosis as stage 3? Did they see cancer in the lymph nodes before the surgery or was that only found after the surgery? I was told your cancer cannot be officially staged until surgery is complete and all the other tests done.

  • @SurvivorJelena

    @SurvivorJelena

    2 жыл бұрын

I was diagnosed stage 3 within 2 weeks of my colonoscopy that found the mass. They did a rectal ultrasound after my diagnosis and could see the lymph node involvement during that test. Since I was diagnosed with rectal I did chemo/rad first so that has the potential to eliminate the cancer and your staging would be different from diagnosis to surgery.

I used to try and just bottle up my worries, but that led to a catastrophic release of those feelings in the form of panic attacks. Now I try to acknowledge the fear and the root of it, allow myself to feel it, tell myself it’s perfectly normal to feel that way, and remind myself that I’m doing what I can to keep myself healthy but I can’t control if the cancer decides to return. It took some therapy to get to this point though. 😀

Christina Bogue I do my best to eat healthy and exercise too. Getting outside for some fresh air helps a lot, but doesn’t completely get rid of the anxiety. Although it sucks that we’re going through this, it is helpful having others to talk to that are dealing with similar issues. 💙

My pathology came back negative for spread to lymph nodes after LAR, but they still want to give me chemo. Anyone have any experience with this same issue. I really don’t want to do it.

It’s ultimately your body and your choice if you want to do chemo. The doctors want to give you the best option to try to ensure the cancer doesn’t return, especially if you’re under 50. If you choose not to make sure you go in regularly for monitoring so they can catch anything early if it does try to come back.

I forgot my ladicain on my first port access and still didn't feel a thing.

That's great you didn't feel anything. I was too nervous to try having it accessed without the cream. 😅

@SurvivorJelena lol I literally just had my second access, this time I felt it, but was no worse then getting poked in the arm.

Cancer treatment is tough (and sometimes scary), so don’t pressure yourself to be positive 100% of the time. Try to think of it as a marathon and each step gets you a little closer to the finish.

My hair thinned out (even my eyebrows and eyelashes), but I didn't lose it all.
