GETTIN SALTY EXPERIENCE PODCAST: Ep. 6 | FDNY PAUL HASHAGEN "The LIVING LEGEND"
In this episope 6 we chat with Paul Hashagen, who both of us like to call the "Living Legend". Paul became a member of Rescue 1 FDNY in 1983 where he spent the next 20 years. Paul has also served as Chief of the Freeport N.Y. Fire Department. Paul is one of the most decorated firefighters to ever work in the FDNY. He also began his fire cartoons shortly after joining and has designed dozens of company patches and logos. His cartoons have also appeared in various fire service publications including Firehouse Magazine and WNYF the official magazine of the FDNY.

Excellent statement..." You get to make a difference in someone's life EVERY day." Very humble. That's class.
I have looked up to this guy my whole life. Along with being a hero, he is also a great guitar player, cartoonist, and artist. I am blessed to call him big brother. He is a wonderful brother, father, husband, and Poppa to 5 amazing grandchildren. Paul, you're a hard act to follow, but I wouldn't have it any other way. There are two kinds of people in this world. Hashagens, and those who wish they were. Love you, Paul! Your baby sister, Lori
This podcast is gold to new guys in the fire service who are passionate about the craft and lack the senior guy advise or stories that help build the culture and keep you motivated
32:40 I’m a vollie upstate and I’m currently going through firefighter one and a lot of the instructors are from rescue 1 they all say the same thing. What an honor it is being taught by these guys at 17.
I was fortunate enough to have Paul train me be a Rescue Diver with the volunteers on the Island...so I spent alot of time with Paul and his Freeport dive team back in the late 80's and early 90"s. He was a amazing instructor and like I said we were real fortunate to have Paul train us ! He's a great man let alone Firefighter!!
This was an absolutely FASCINATING interview. What an interesting person. I also appreciate you guys just letting him go, asking open-ended questions that kept him talking and talking. Enjoyable, thanks!

Every time paul said i almost fell over i was dead 😂 the jokes were so funny
It would be so so interesting if you got Ret. Joseph Pfeifer from Battalion 1
The best podcast I’ve ever listened to. A new fan from the UK
Mind= Blown.. This legend has done all the amazing stuff he has with the FDNY..... He saw The Who at Woodstock...AND... He met Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend!! My favorite band of all time!
Paul is one of the best! What an interesting man, and the nonstop stories!
I LOVE THE CHIEF STEVE SONG!......................... I could listen to Paul all day. Thanks for sharing !
Real interesting stuff guys. Paul's a great guest.
He got his movie nurses confused. Jane Dornacher was the victim in the helicopter crash. She was a nurse in the 1983 movie The Right Stuff. With all his great stories I have no idea how he keeps any of it straight.

Hey Lou I wrote up DAVE Weiss for an off duty rescue of a man on tracks with the power on in Queens.I was covering in L-172 at the time.Dave received an A for it but should have received a class 2 at least. Some day I will tell you about it , was truly an unbelievable rescue and the man lived.

Great stuff. I’m watching from the UK 🇬🇧 and know nothing about this subject but loving it.
I knew a retired captain from FDNY Rescue 1. Jim Ryan. Lived in Venice, FL.
10-8 from his old lady's box...Lmfao !!!!
This man has re inspired me more than once . You guys do a great show.
This was a very great 👍🏼 interview
"Be serious, be ready to do it".
Louis Fletcher played Nurse Ratched. She is still alive.
I’m just watching this interview and my grandfather Raymond Wilson Ret. Rescue 2 received the Bennet.
Great to see/hear you again Paul. I remember hanging around in Freeport to listen to Hash wars stories from your first few years on the job. By the way, Buckeyes were first popular on emergency vehicles in the teens. First, the smaller ones were used on police cars. FDNY began using them during the depression years and ended their use in the 50s. But, as you know, a lot of those older rigs were used, especially as spares, into the war years. (Lates 60s). When’s your next book coming?!
No offense, but Louise Fletcher played "Nurse Ratched" in "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest," passing in 2022. It was Jane Dornacker who lost her life in that chopper crash, who, among other things, was an actress...but not as "Nurse Ratched."
OG from R1🇺🇸
Not in anyway to take away from Paul’s amazing rescue but the reporter on the helicopter was not in one flew over the cuckoo nest. That was Louise Fletcher that played nurse Ratchett and she is 85 and alive

Jane Dornacker played Nurse Murch in the "Right Stuff". This has been written about in several books. Paul can be allowed a brain fart or two, after all he's pushing 70? I particularly enjoyed the Joe Angelini story, and the rescue where Tommy Baker (another FDNY legend) commandeered the tower ladder.
