GETTIN SALTY EXPERIENCE PODCAST: Ep. 6 | FDNY PAUL HASHAGEN "The LIVING LEGEND"

In this episope 6 we chat with Paul Hashagen, who both of us like to call the "Living Legend". Paul became a member of Rescue 1 FDNY in 1983 where he spent the next 20 years. Paul has also served as Chief of the Freeport N.Y. Fire Department. Paul is one of the most decorated firefighters to ever work in the FDNY. He also began his fire cartoons shortly after joining and has designed dozens of company patches and logos. His cartoons have also appeared in various fire service publications including Firehouse Magazine and WNYF the official magazine of the FDNY.

I have looked up to this guy my whole life. Along with being a hero, he is also a great guitar player, cartoonist, and artist. I am blessed to call him big brother. He is a wonderful brother, father, husband, and Poppa to 5 amazing grandchildren. Paul, you're a hard act to follow, but I wouldn't have it any other way. There are two kinds of people in this world. Hashagens, and those who wish they were. Love you, Paul! Your baby sister, Lori

He got his movie nurses confused. Jane Dornacher was the victim in the helicopter crash. She was a nurse in the 1983 movie The Right Stuff. With all his great stories I have no idea how he keeps any of it straight.

Great to see/hear you again Paul. I remember hanging around in Freeport to listen to Hash wars stories from your first few years on the job. By the way, Buckeyes were first popular on emergency vehicles in the teens. First, the smaller ones were used on police cars. FDNY began using them during the depression years and ended their use in the 50s. But, as you know, a lot of those older rigs were used, especially as spares, into the war years. (Lates 60s). When’s your next book coming?!

No offense, but Louise Fletcher played "Nurse Ratched" in "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest," passing in 2022. It was Jane Dornacker who lost her life in that chopper crash, who, among other things, was an actress...but not as "Nurse Ratched."

Jane Dornacker played Nurse Murch in the "Right Stuff". This has been written about in several books. Paul can be allowed a brain fart or two, after all he's pushing 70? I particularly enjoyed the Joe Angelini story, and the rescue where Tommy Baker (another FDNY legend) commandeered the tower ladder.
