Back in about 1965 I was working at the Vehicle Depot in Cyprus and when UN soldiers came to collect their vehicles from us some would complain that their Ferrets didn't go fast enough. We were never impressed with them over this and usually ignored them and moved them on. However, there were always accidents with these vehicles and almost always resulting in fatalities. One day, I was asked to go and collect a Ferret that had been involved in an accident and tow it back to the depot for scrapping or repair at the nearby REME Workshop. When I go to the scout car it didn't look too back so I climbed up ready to remove and let my mate attach a tow and winch it onto the trailer. I took one look inside and the first thing I saw was the soles of a pair of DMS Boots melted onto the accelerator and brake pedals. I scrambled out and we just dragged it onto the trailer and took it back with us. It was a nasty moment to only guess how awful it would be to be trapped in one in a fire. Later, in 1967 in Libya a riot in Tripoli and a soldier in the Household Cavalry was killed as a result of a petrol bomb being thrown inside his Ferret.

Made it to Tankfest on Saturday and had a great day, I can't recommend it enough. I also spent some time chatting with Dale and the team @Airfix where I was able to look over the Ferret, she's a beaut. Looking forward to it's release, start of August if I recall correctly.

It would be nice if they could qive a larger selection of No Plates as many a many Ex serviceman would love to have their actual vehicles

Nice, very nice. I'll be getting one of those.

I might be possibly the only person buying this kit to make a specific fictional version of the vehicle: In TOCA Touring Car Championship on the PlayStation, there's a cheat to unlock two vehicles, one being titled a tank. This was based on a Ferret MK2, and it even had a working cannon that could knock enemies flying.

Very nice ! I think it would look especially good with crew figures - the empty driver's compartment is crying out for a driver figure (I'm sure someone will produce some at a later date). I like the U.N. version. 👍

Been anticipating the Ferret since it was announced. Might have to buy two for the UN and Canadian schemes which both look cool. Pity a kid on a bike wasn't included for the Berlin scheme...aftermarket anyone? lol

The box art was interesting, depicting as Dale said, a Ferret in West Berlin before the Berlin Wall came down in 1989. I /think/ the Brandenburg Gate is behind it, and I'm not sure how geographically accurate that is, but it's a nice image :)

At least a few aftermarket items placed on the built kit. For one, the sand channels on the front. The ones in the kit are 3 piece plastic too thick and the holes are only partially through.

Markings for a Ferret based in Aden in the early '60's... light stone with the ID white stripe across the back of the vehicle would have been nice too but as they say you can't have everything

@@MOS6510ModelsThe place where it’s parked is called ‘Parisier Platz’ and that was former East Germany. The sign’s wording is accurate but it’s facing the wrong way and about 100m out of place! I wonder if they’ll correct the artwork in later releases?

I hope they give the option for the turret. On or off

I think the kit looks quite good but if it doesn't have any tyre details,I do think that is a shame. It wouldn't need to be sponsored,size lettering or a spelling mistake,like some manufacturers have done,all improve the end result.Thanks for showing and best wishes. Pete

@@MOS6510Models I agree it's a rock and a hard place. If you're an out of the box builder,it's ok. If you start adding an etch set,to draw the eye in,your tyres look a bit bare. Personally,I try to add details at low cost,using sprue and strip etc,and adding valve stems is my first move. But adding resin wheels will not be in my budget. Reninds me of the time when an East German border guard finally had enough,dropped his rifle and ran for the Berlin wall and defected to the west....now having said that the wall itself hadnt actually bben built yet...at this piont in time the "wall" was just a series of barbed wire emplacements that you could just step over

Well you are wrong there re: Academy... And seriously they have gone cheap because no writing on the tyres? give your head a wobble matey lol. Its a penny shy of 24 quid. Its extremely accurate and well thought out, I'm sure there will be resin wheels you can buy that would have that detail on the tyres if you wish to pay out more for them.

@@MOS6510Models Why should I have to fork out for resin wheels, just because Airfix can't be arsed to make the tyres properly? You know, as well as I do, that no tyre ever made has NO writing on it. Plus I don't care what you say about Academy. The fact of the matter is that the tools and plastic have been made by Academy. Plus I really don't know how you can describe it as "This incredible new Airfix Ferret Scout Car". It may be a decent kit. But incredible, NOPE. Oh, and I find it really funny that the box art clearly shows lettering on the tyres. Yet the kit parts have NONE.

If its that much of an issue either dont get it or get Upgrades. The last thing i would worry about is the tyres i mean there not the focus of the model id me more worries if it hat the wrong turret on it

@@Andy.Gledhill.Models. FACT : There is no Academy Plastic or Tooling with this kit.. This is all Airfix. Designed by a very talented designer in house with incredible accuracy. I do find it sad you hate Airfix so much.. such a shame

@@SullysScaleModels That's not the point is it? The fact is they went for the cheap option. Same thing happened with the Katy Ambulance. If the discerning modeller wants to make the best looking Scout Car he can make. He should not have to fork out for after market wheels and tyres. Such a set of after market tyres would likely cost the same amount of money as the cost of the kit.

Yes, they were used in the cities and on rural patrols. Most were the Mk 2 version in deep bronze green. Some had the .30 machine gun removed from the turret and the space blanked off. Not sure when they were eventually pulled out. Firing Line/DJ Parkins makes figures to sit in the open turret, including one in a Flak vest for Northern Ireland/Lebanon.
