Get to Work! - Bishop Barron's Sunday Sermon

Friends, today we come to the wonderful Feast of the Ascension of the Lord. Like the disciples in our first reading, we often want to ask the Lord, “When is all of this going to come to fruition? What’s it all about? When is all of this going to make sense?” Reasonable enough questions. And we hear the same answer: It’s not for you to worry about. Rather, get to work! In the Ascension, the Lord moves to a higher dimension and then sends the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, so that we can be empowered to do Christ’s work in the world.
Mass Readings:
Reading 1 - Acts 1:1-11
Psalm - Ps 47:2-3, 6-7, 8-9
Reading 2 - Eph 1:17-23
Gospel - Mk 16:15-20

To our Bishops and Priests.... please, please, please lead the way on going OUT into the world, not just inwardly focused within the walls of the parish. An army of lay people are ready and willing to share the gospel and stand for truth. We just need a little direction and leadership. God bless Bishop Barron.

You’ll note here that the good bishop doesn’t say “wait for someone to give you direction.” No, if there is an army of lay people ready to go out, then go out. It is the laity’s responsibility to go out into the world. You may wish to read Apostolicam Actuositatem regarding this. I think a significant problem in the Church today is that when the laity do go out and bring Christ’s Truth to others, they bring them into a Church where the priests and bishops do not hold to that same truth. It is the laity’s (not the clergy’s) distinct obligation to go out into the world and restore the temporal order, but we must be assured that when we bring people through the doors, we bring them to good shepherds. It’s tiring telling people what the Church teaches only to be told “well Father so-and-so says it doesn’t matter.”

This is one of the most illuminating sermons I have ever listened to. Bishop Barron’s use of words (such as dimension as opposed to Heaven) allowed me to piece together concepts I have been brooding my about. Extremely grateful to have this content help guide me on this spiritual path. Glory to God. Christ is King.

Understanding the context makes a world of difference. Freud wrote, "The antidote to Christianity is literacy", Rome won the war of the Jews, so Jesus is hanging from a tree for 2000 years. The Christian home is in Rome, not Jerusalem. "Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, cursed is everyone that hangeth on a tree:" Galatians 3:13 Christian videos present the typical preaching to the choir, since literate people don't waste time with this nonsense. I suspect the Roman Empire had atheists. Matthew 17:20 He replied, “Because you have so little faith. Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.” I like asking believers how they can possibly think their faith is respectable, given Jesus said faith is worthless, since you can't expect obedience when ordering mountains to move?

Thank you, Bishop Barron for hosting a nice internet site where s person can post comments. I am highly supportive of the churches - each one has its positive aspects. I have travelled the USA for over three and a half years, talking to people about the Gospel. You know how hard it is to find a place to post a comment? It is quite difficult. They took all the bulletin boards down, and those who would do good in some small way are silenced by the overload of attention to commerce. That never worked with the Babylonians, the Assyrians, nor the Romans. It is not going to work now. Christians trying to fit into a commerce agenda - it's probably always going to amount to frustration and separation, lack of progress, lack of praise. These are serious matters. Gravity, itself is not something that is going to go away. And neither is the truth of God.

@Stupidityindex I was just re-reading Lord of the Rings. It's interesting to find out that J.R.R Tolkien wasn't literate. People like you are quite sad. Everything is reduced to materialism. No room for beauty, no room for higher truths. As evidenced by your total lack of imagination concerning the parable of the mountain. That's why Jesus spoke in parables, so that self satisfied scoffers wouldn't be able to understand what He was saying, because they don't deserve to.

I wonder if the apostles of Jesus had tears in their eyes when Jesus was taken up to heaven. My eyes water when I read that part of the Acts of the apostles.

This correlates with the long-held teaching that, during the Mass, at the consecration, all of heaven comes down to the altar as that miracle of transsubstantiation occurs. Thank you Bishop Barron.

Thank you Bishop Barron it is such a relief when coming across a tteaching like this ...in such a short time you explain someting profound...and like physical food you break it down so that we understand better... Study, believe and finally use it ourselves as we do our humble share of evangelization...praying for you Bishop and all other priests whom Jesus is using in a special to help empower members of the Body of Christ🙏😇

Someone travelling at the speed of light would reach the end of the Solar System in under 27 hours. So in 2000 years Jesus would have gone much, much further. But, of course, we understand that what Bishop said was just for the sake of illustration. After all, even 2000 light-years is just a spec of distance in the universe with a radius of 50 billion light-years... And I liked the comparison with dots, lines, two and three dimensional shapes. Great sermon!

With a profound a conversion with an illumination of conscience experience 16 years ago with a vision of seeing Jesus on the Cross emitting white and red rays of light every few seconds, I can feel the Apostles looking up in the sky being mesmerized by that event with joy and astonishment.. God bless Bishop Barron for his zeal in preaching the Gospel.

The past few days, others and I went to Mexico to build a playground swingset for orphaned children run by nuns. Yes, it was hard work and quite humbling asking for donations to pay for the swing set. Yes, it was an issue crossing it at the border by dealing with Mexican customs. Yes, it was very hot outside when I assembled it after a few days. BUT boy did it feel great to watch those young ones embrace their new playground equipment. Also, the nuns' faces were teeming with excitement and gratitude for our team for providing it. I heard Bishop's Sermon on my way to work and I felt a special uplift to GET To Work for Jesus's Mission on Earth. Obedience, Obedience, and Obedience was propelling me to do my super small part in this world. God Bless everyone!

Thank you so much, Bishop Barron. You've done it again: you've made a usually (to me) perplexing part/act of Jesus' time on earth (The Ascension) crystal clear! When He Ascended into the higher dimension, He drew all things (everyone and everything) to Himself (like the square(s) into the cube). Just wow!

This Feast holds special meaning for me because it's the name of the Church community where I've been for over two decades now. It's important that Bishop Barron indicates that Jesus isn't going up into space but entering a different dimension where He can see all that's happening in the world and direct what happens there, much as He becomes so close to us, especially in the re-presentation of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass that happens throughout the world. While Jesus has left us, He is still present with us in a powerful way, commanding us to go forth, yet accompanying us. I've thought of the Mass as a way to experience the Paschal Triduum each Sunday. It's a great image to think that the Mass is a way to experience the Ascension each Sunday as we enter the Heavenly realm where Jesus is, when we re-present the sacrifice that frees us from sin and brings us alive. Alleluia!

There is so much explaining, and that is actually helpful. On the other hand, there's a whole lotta people out here who knows how to rock. Think these two ends of the spectrum could ever get together? And then, I think, for what? Isn't it single file all the way up to the alter? The the only thing I can think of is those two commandments Jesus Christ gave. And how important it is to keep those two commandments in tight priority. The two commandments are indivisible and yet, that first commandment has to come first. Commandment number 1 in first priority. It is only thereby that the second commandment can happen. And the two commandments can only happen because of and on alignment with what Jesus Christ commanded.
