Get Started with LitePlacer PnP: LP and OpenPnP

Ғылым және технология

After assembling the entire Liteplacer pick & place, we finally get to play with it. Here I'll go over the experience of producing 70 PCBs of six different designs, using both the Liteplacer software and OpenPnP, sharing lessons lessons learned along the way.

    Thank you so much for these videos using the LitePlacer! I'm going through the DIY or Buy process, and with the complexities of just setting up OpenPnP (tuning, finagling, etc.) I feel very confident in going with the pre-built LitePlacer and OpenPnP software after watching this.

    Awesome! One thing I love, in theory, with the LitePlacer is it's hackability--it's a straightforward design, everything is accessible and you can do pretty much whatever you want. But... so many projects, so little time: I haven't gotten around to a lot of the little things I'd like to do (vacuum detection, a better "auto levelling" system, etc) but the thing is I haven't *had* to either :-) The machine is more than usable as designed, so I'm certain that after going through the setup/calib the machine will serve you well. Enjoy, have fun, and hit me up through here or my blog if you hit any snags you can't get passed. Cheers!

    Thanks! My video posts over the past few months have been very pick & place-centric but I have to say getting this thing into the toolkit has had a big impact on flow and capability and the vids reflect that. Now I've started considering the CNC and other automation aspects of the equation, too. I think your own videos may be helpful to me in this regard :)

    By a lucky chance there was one being sold locally, with all the recent upgrades (rear axle, cameras, nozzle changer). So Juha allowed me to cancel my unshipped order and I'm now going to collect the machine and get started. It is already configured for OpenPnP (Windows) which I will be running on an Ubuntu machine. Thanks for your inspiration and tips.

I am currently printing different component holders to find a solution that works for me. I hope to try some test boards in the next week or so. Currently using LitePlacer software. Hi, and thanks! Just this morning I was thinking of wrapping up all the minor changes I made to the build that, I think, make it better (I played with placement of vacuum solenoid, bottom cam, stuff like that) and will be doing that shortly. I haven't yet tried other cameras but I think I will be doing so, if only for the bottom vision, which is where conversions to HSV really mess up. Good luck on the kit build--it's arduous but one step at a time gets you there no problem--and hit me up if you have any Qs. Cheers, P

Also, Juha has been open and available the few times I got in touch (pre-sale and shortly thereafter) but I haven't felt the need to contact again... using LP + openpnp has in general worked quite well and I've now assembled hundreds of boards and am still quite happy.

    Very useful video series. Do you know if anyone has used IR LEDs to illuminate the parts and a filter to block visible light? I feel like that would remove changing ambient light problems.

  • @PsychogenicTechnologies

    @PsychogenicTechnologies

    2 жыл бұрын

    That's an interesting idea. I don't know if it would work--IR images are usually grainy and I don't know if this is a wavelength, intensity or sensor thing. In any case, most of the issues I've had in the last months have been restricted to extreme changes in light (like direct sunlight hitting on or at least near work surface).

  • @goatarse

    @goatarse

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@PsychogenicTechnologies I'm developing a product at the moment that uses similar types of cameras and IR leds. If you get the LEDs bright, as they would be in this application the image is amazingly sharp. However I have just been reading that OpenPNP is using some kind of colour keying and obviously B/W infrared illuminated images would not work for this.

    How do the parts stick to the PCB before soldering?

  • @ProtonOne11

    @ProtonOne11

    2 жыл бұрын

    The gooey solder paste is applied to the board (usually with a sencil printing process) before you start placing components in the pick and place machine. The flux that is mixed in with the solder paste is enough to get the components to stick in place until you reflow solder (bake) the boards. If you try to place components just for testing the machine, without solder paste on the board, you usually need to put some double sided sticky tape or flux on the board to hold the components down.

  • @PsychogenicTechnologies

    @PsychogenicTechnologies

    2 жыл бұрын

    Yeah, exactly as -ƸӜƷ- said. Just before the nozzle releases the vacuum, the part is smooshed into the paste goo. It's good enough to ensure the part stays on the board and even allows you to take the PCBs to the oven without issue. May need some extra adhesive if doing 2-sided boards, but for single side it works great.

    Hi Pat, The Liteplacer is one of those machines that I keep coming back to because I think it has great potential for customisation. I pulled the trigger on one so of course, now i'm invested. Feeders are a really, really big deal and I am sure you know that. So I have set off to work on that issue before I get the machine and build it. A possible solution has been made by a chap named Stephen Hawes (has a youtube channel with the same name) Info is in his github repo @ github.com/sphawes/index It's part of a PnP machine he is developing which looks like a neat project that I might stick my fingers in, too. I am betting the feeder concept can be adapted to work with the Liteplacer. Your thoughts seeing as you have yours built? :) Cheers Pat.

    Hey Mark, Same here: though the mods I've made so far have been pretty basic, my current wishlist includes * vacuum seal detection to deal with the occasional failed pick-up more gracefully; * swapping out the bottom vision camera for something that'll convert to HSV more reliably for OpenPnP; and * some sort of automated feed system--probably not worth it for every, or even most, parts but boy am I tired of resetting those 100n cap feeds Though not the fastest or bestest pick and place, if you want to play with the setup and/or you can get by with 0402 for your radio stuff, I've found it to work well and the price point is pretty nice too. Hit me up if you have any Qs or even just to show off your eventual setup: curious to see what you do with it.
