I actually, accidently just stumbled upon your Vblog this morning, and gotta say, so far I'm pretty impressed. You seem pretty straight forward, and knowledgeable in the things you talk about. Its as if you agree with a lot of my own opinions, and outlooks, on numerous subjects, dealing with the transportation industry.I, myself am a 30 year veteran to almost every aspect of this business, from owning a small fleet of trucks, for about 8 years, specializing in Over-dimensional, Heavy haul freight to my own brokering agency. I have been a certified CDL Examiner for years, and have always tried to relay the "brutal" truth to people coming in to the business, without scaring the shit out of them at the same time. You seem to be able to do that as well.I guess what I'm saying is, " Well Done Sir " I hope to see more of your V-blogs in the future.

You're right, The trucking lifestyle does suck. I love trucking but not the part of being out weeks and months at a time. Been there, done that for 16 years. Started a dedicated route from Dallas to Memphis and Dallas to St. Louis every week. Only gone two nights a week and I make just as much as when I was gone all the time. One more thing, I actually have a life outside trucking again. Moral of the story is that Abe is telling the truth here!

If you're not doing LTL you're selling yourself short, I don't know of one person who is driving LTL line and is making less than $70K a year. Most of the people I know who are driving LTL line are making around $80K a year. Last year I made $85K. So after driving OTR for 2-5 years go work for a LTL company...Reddaway, Conway (now XPO), ABF, Yellow Roadway, and even DHE. Yes it is all night driving and you have to get used to sleeping during the day, but the pay is awesome, and even at this pay rate people still bitch about their pay rate. I earn .56 a mile and run around 3K a week.

I get paid by the mile, for each stop, breakdown and detention. Hell I even get paid fifty a night to sleep in the truck. It all adds up at the end of the week and I am still home with the family........Mike V.

Hey Abe, I have been following you and many other Truckers Videos and getting Info on Trucking, I plan on attending Celedon Driving Academy- in Indianapolis, Ind., to start out, mainly due to the way of both getting my CDL, and Warning a living. my questions here are, does one really need an Attorney in every state for Owner/Operator, or is that just a crock? my next question is would it be a need to have an accountant handy? I have no ambition to become an Owner/Operator right out the gate, or for at least the next two years, based on your own recommendation as well as Trainer James, Allie Knight, Lil Guy Trucker, and Indiana Jack, etc Just to give you some Ideas on where I am getting my info. Everyone strongly recommends against the own/op thing, I get that point, yet what about the others I mentioned above?

best luck at celadon. some owner ops out the gate after schooling do good and some dont. i have a friend that went lease purchase through Prime after got out of school who owned his own business before went to become a truck driver. he is starting on his 3rd year with prime and last year after all of things came out his check, he cleared close to $96,000. his first year he cleared closed to $89,000. he is already in the process of buying out his current truck and of purchase straight out a new truck. he has already hired someone through Prime that lives near by him to drive for him his first truck.

+JohnDoe 1979 thank you, and that is Amazing. I admit the Own/op thing does sound appealing, yet I don't have alot of info on this issue bit what I do have is at best a judgement call on a possible future based on current economic situations. as I am new to this aspect of driving, I expect it to be difficult my first year or so out, after that I don't know...Everyone says it gets better with time, yet I would Love to make near that my First year out, for me, that would be Phenomenal.

+Wiccanriche it does get better with time. i been trucking 13 years and then did 1 year and 7 months away from it as much needed vacation (didnt work atvall since i the money built up to do what i want to do) and then just went back to driving almost 4 months ago. without having to be a trainer or at them one them starter companies with low pay, i make the top cent per mile pay where im making $1600 a week before taxes and what i got to pay out for my part of my health insurance and im home every 2 weeks with 3 whole day off...do your time of 1 to 2 years and then start looking a smaller company with less than 200 trucks...they carr more about their drivers than these "mega companies"

If you needed an attorney in every state you drive in, as an O/O, it would be impossible to make any money. A good trucking-centric tax person is a must, however. Keep in mind that only two professionals may represent you before the IRS: an Enrolled Agent (EA) AND an attorney. Only ONE can not be forced to testify against you in Kangaroo Kourt: an attorney.

I know you don't have family insurance, but maybe you can work some information into your upcoming videos? About how much do these companies charge weekly, do they cover pre-existing conditions and is it good health insurance. I know you're with a major carrier, but what about people adding money to these 401-k plans... I noticed some is like 4 years to be fully invested... a lot of drivers are lucky to be with same company one or 2 years. Also, how safe is your 401-k money with some of these companies... they could wrap it up tomorrow. Explain FICA... I'm drawing a blank. lol Where are your county, state, medicare, and social security deductions? You can always talk about per-diem so that people can understand it better. You can explain about how many hours you're running each week. I noticed you mentioned 30k your first year... seems kinda low to me!? That's not even half my salary. I was thinking a lot more than that your first year!? Well, unless you went to companies like Swift or CRST.
