Kara, thanks so much for this very informative video on using Marmalead. Please make more videos like this - Marmalead should pay you to do them! After I finished watching this, I started searching for new products to make and found some great ones! However, that led me to go directly to my material supplier websites to find the components I'd need to buy. The problem is that even I already have over 1000 items in my shop, I have over 200 expired items that need to be rephotographed, videoed, and researched for keywords. And then there are the hundred or so I have made and not yet photographed or listed, and the hundreds of items I have yet to make with the large stash of materials I have on hand. I keep getting ideas and then buying new materials (since there are always a few important components I don't have) and continually spending my profits on materials! Unfortunately, my backlog keeps growing! I suspect there are signs that this is an addictive disorder!

A small business invests in tools including time, energy to acquire the skills to make something and to produce something that is saleable enough. Can you do a Marmalead search video for digital products?
@KaraBuntin

Digital is the same as any other product, and there are TONS of ideas for keywords for digital in Marmalead.
This is my first time
I have a couple of question regarding keywords and tags. Are keywords the same as tags? What is the definition of a longtail keyword? How are longtail keywords different from tags. I noticed on my Etsy shop that you are only allowed a certain number of characters for keywords in the listings. Great video by the way..Subbed.
@KaraBuntin
3 жыл бұрын
Tags are just keywords that you add in the tags section :) They basically are extra keywords that support the title and give the search engine more information about your listing. Long tail keywords are phrases that people use to search that are more specific and more likely to lead to a sale because they tend to be what people search for when they're closer to buying. For example, "dress" would be a short tail search because it's really general, and not many people are going to search for "dress" and buy something without getting more specific. So you would search for "black dress with long sleeves" when you're closer to buying, because you're narrowing down what results you want to see.

I am curious about the issue with long tail keywords and etsy. Since they only allow 20 Characters in their tags, how do you reconcile long tail keyword useage? Just in the title? Thank you.
@KaraBuntin
3 жыл бұрын
Search engines prefer exact word order, but they don't require it. The idea of a long tail keyword strategy doesn't mean that you have every keyword in exact word order, but it's slightly better if you can. If you can't fit a specific keyword in a tag, break it up between two tags that are in sequence so that they read in sequence.
When they show "Popular Tags" at the bottom, are these popular tags used by the customer or popular tags from the seller's point of view in that many sellers use those tags in their listings?
@KaraBuntin

It's just tags that are used a lot in actual listings. It doesn't mean they're good, it just means they're used a lot.

Look at the stats that Etsy tells you the listings are being found for to start with, then go from there. You can also check the Etsy search analytics beta to see what Etsy is showing you for in general, even if it doesn't bring traffic to your shop. That can tell you whether Etsy is showing your listings for the right keywords or if it's totally confused about what your listings are.
This was great, Kara! I started my Etsy shop a long time ago, then just closed it for health reasons. Now I am going at it more regularly. I make jewelry. But making all different types of styles doesn't really work for long term planning. I made wire wrapped gemstone heart necklaces for Valentine's Day, but didn't sell anything. Then friends on Facebook started buying them, and it may continue to be a good selling product. Seeing how you used Marmalead to identify low competition creations was a real eye opener for me, and exciting. I can do simple wire wraps; stamp charms, bracelets, all shapes of metals, etc. It would be great to identify ideas that I might never think of by using Marmalead.

Whats the sweet spot for # of searches vs # of competing listings
@KaraBuntin
Жыл бұрын
It really depends on your shop and the category. There’s no one’s right answer for everyone…If you go to your search stats you can get an idea about competition by seeing what search terms you’re found for and how much competition there is for those. That can give you an idea about what Etsy is showing your shop for and what general competition level you should aim for.

One thing that has me confused in all the tutorials (I keep thinking it will get addressed but no luck yet) is that marmalead doesn’t take into account the 20 character limit in tags. All the long tail recommended tags seem to exceed the limit and are therefor useless as I can’t actually use them. Is there a way around this?

You don't need to put the long tails on one tag. If you do want to keep them in the exact word order, just break then up between two tags in sequence.

The only way to tell is to try putting some listings up. But the way Marmalead works is the search data shows actual customer searches, so people are specifically looking for those things, which means they're not randomly being shown them by Etsy, they're looking for them. And in my experience it does translate into sales.
Like shower curtains 🙄 Some KZreadrs said you can make good money on those - except it’s already over saturated with top sellers so it’s impossible to gain traction. I suppose unless you want to do a race to the bottom strategy. Which is lame. Don’t do that.
