The ETRSi might not match the build quality of some others, but it is very rugged and highly reliable. It was used extensively by wedding photographers. It is, without a doubt, a fully professional model, indicated in part by its extensive accessory line, which includes several finders, 3 wind options (crank, thumb, and motor). And TTL flash metering. Also there are two 35mm backs- the 135N for standard size 35mm format, and the 135W for panoramic format.

Awesome fun review. I'm getting back into med format. I absolutely loved the Mamiya 645 AF D iii. But yes, cost a bomb to get back. I just need auto focus & TTL flash 6x9 would be way cool.

Don't buy the 1.9N. They all suffer from irreparable haze due to a design flaw. Stay happy with the 1.9C!

Problem with the GA645 is that at short distances (talk portrait distance) it often misses the focus. Not a problem when focusing further away.

I am late to photography, but I only want 2 cameras: the Hasselblad 503 CX/CW and the Mamiya C330. Since I've only started this year, I have acquired the first, from Japan, in mint condition. I am excited to just try, learn as I go. Already though, I am looking for 2 additional lenses to complement the Hasselblad. The camera did come with the usual 80 mm, but I am on the hunt for a 50mm and a 180 mm. The seller from Japan also has a 50mm that I am "eyeing." And if conditions are right, then I will be getting that one in under a month. After a few lenses and the C330, I am stopping. I will just use these 2 cameras and lenses to go with them. I don't want the G. A. S. to get me.

don't forget lenses for the C330 and go for the ProS or F models, oh yes don't forget the viewfinders also, LOL. You just think you are done shopping.

@@silbay I concur indeed Silbay, I will require lenses for the C330. Gosh! How subtlety the G.A.S comes in to get you.

My understanding was that all Mamiya 645 SLRs have an electronically controlled shutter. That is a big disadvantage to me. One workaround seems to be to get an RB67 and a 645 back. I would love to see you do videos on pure mechanical options (except possibly light meter) in the 4 120 formats (645, 6x6, 6x7, 6x9).

I decided on the to try the Mamiya RB67 Pro S 70mm but used a 645 back. I liked it but wan a tru 6x6 now. While definitely not inexpensive, I found I really love the feel & handling of the hasselblad 500c/m. And I can still do 70mm & 6x6. Yey!

@@mkshffr4936 whwt are some good usable folding compact rangefinder 645/6x6? Not terribly expensive! Along the lines of the classic Mamiya Sux V Aitomat.

Lubitel 166U comes with a 645 mask and has markings for the 645 frame on the screen. As a twin lens camera with challenging focussing, it’s not the easiest but it’s very cheap. No light meter either. Used ones go for €20-40. Lens is fixed at 75m. It can also do 6x6 when the mask is removed. Make sure the mask is included in the sale. A fun camera but not one to depend on.

The Mamiya 645 feels light and "cheap", but it's body is aircraft aluminum coated in plastic - so it ain't delicate.

Get a Mamiya 645 Pro. The ETRS isn’t worth it. They feel cheap to me. Didn’t work properly, was a bit finicky. They are harder to get repaired too. Since then, I have got a Hasselblad 500C/M, an ELM and a Pentacon Six and a Mamiya C220.

Personally, I think the 645 1000s is far sexier than any of those "modern" Mayiyas. Not a fan of a plasticky looking camera that may as well just be a run of the mill DSLR aesthetic. Also, I could care less about interchangeable backs. I guess if you're using a 30 year old medium format camera for professional work in 2024, it could be an issue, lol. I've had 2 Hasselblads and never once cared about the interchangeable back. I'll shoot the film I have in my camera and then move on.
