I really needed this... I have been sitting in front of Unity for a few years now. I've become pretty proficient in C#, drawing pixel graphics, Blender, audio creation, etc. *BUT* I've had an insanely difficult time coming up with an idea to put all of that to use on. I start countless projects and always realize that I really have no idea of where to go with it (i.e., no actual game concept). I'm going to put this technique to use immediately and see what happens! Thank you!

Here are some mistakes I made myself lately: - Choosing a scope that is too large. - Not having a cool player fantasy and just focusing on the game mechanics. I think this concept has helped a lot of recent Minecraft KZreadrs. Like "Minecraft, but it rains lava", or "Minecraft, but everywhere I look explodes". These kinds videos are super popular right now, and what you described here explains that phenomenon.

This But... Design method sounds really cool! I think it will help me alot on my game project :D Did you use the But... Design method in one of your games? Oh and... It's a standard chair but when you sit on it, you get teleported to another chair in another world :O

Thanks. Do that. So far I've only used this method to come up with the ideas you've seen in this video. This method just came to my mind a couple of days ago and I wanted to share it right away, because I really feel like this provides some real value. I hope I'll be able to use this in further projects and tell you how it turns out.

It's the basics of Game Design BUT also a method to over-complexi-fy it. Although amazing work, and a really good way for beginner's to get more ideas for their game's designs, BUT they should also be aware of some constraints or they will never be able to complete that game if their idea becomes to much BUT-y and complex, BUT still a simple and great idea initiating word. WOW!!, Great video!!

The following is essentially a restatement of the point of the video BUT it is about the medium of film-BUT it also adds a new layer to the method. I recall the South Park guys (Parker, Stone) teaching up-and-coming writers the following lessons: if you can put "and then" between your scenes your story is bad. If you can (have to?) put "therefore/because" or "but" between them, your story is good. Probably this can be applied to the "but" school of design: don't just say "but", also say "because". It's a normal house BUT there's hot chocolate coming out of the taps in the kitchen sink BECAUSE it was designed by children. They were able to design and build their dream house BECAUSE they are rich BUT they are only rich BECAUSE they inherited the money from their parents who both passed away too early. THEREFORE the children are sad and poorly raised BUT the neighbor has taken them under his wing and become a substitute uncle BUT the mafia is after his money THEREFORE the kids are in danger BUT [whatever]. (At 4:04 it says "correct" BUT one 'r' is missing. This is probably just a typo BUT it could be our host going meta.)

I have only so much time per week in this kind of video is pretty heavy on writing and audio recordings. I spend about 3 to 4 hours on the animations and a lot more is not really possible at the moment. I'd like to stick to a messy look, because that helps to hide my bad drawing skills and saves time. :D Any ideas how to make a messy look work? Guess I'll keep trying a couple more times and if it doesn't come together I'll start looking into different solution. As always thanks for your honest feedback. :) For your personal watching experience I recommend treating these videos like podcasts from now on. The imagery isn't really necessary to get what's going on. :D
