I was obsessed with cowboy culture as a little kid and my mom bought me this record . She passed away the other night and I played this song for her as she went. It certainly brings back memories and I would like to think she appreciated it as she passed.

The ballad of Magellan is actually longer than this song

This refreshed my childhood memories

I love this

They mean cattle. A dogie is a yearling calf. They are driven (herded) back to pasture by the drivers (cowboys). This song is about herding cattle to market for slaughter. The dogies are the calves the cattle leave behind, still to young for marke, so they are driven back to pasture in Wyoming. They brand and docket their tails before leaving. They brand them to show who they belong to, they dock the tail for sanitary reasons. Hope that helps.
