It's crazy that Kiko and Paul (Gilbert) both are monstrous pickers, yet, they actually swear by the 2 opposites: Kiko plays flat and parallel avoiding the "scratch" pick tone whereas Paul plays always with an angle just to get THAT "scratch" tone every time (as a cello he describes it)....More amazing though is that both are super articulate , clean, fast and awesome!!!

Yeah. I noticed that. But I think Paul plays in that way because he is almost 100% a rock/metal guitar player. So the scratch sounds amazing in his style. Kiko is a rock guitarrist too but he has more jazz/Brazilian and Fusion influences. Some styles where guitar is played in clean tone and the scratch sound is not the more requested. Whatever, both genius guitar players

Marty Friedman has the weirdest picking technique ever and he has a fantastic tone and can pick really fast! That goes to show that you can pick the strings pretty much any way you want, as long as you believe that what you're doing actually works. I find that very inspiring! :)

@Betodiasc

@@kasarraial Yeah. I know he can play jazz. Paul studied at Berklee and he certainly studied it a lot. But it's not his thing. Kiko first intended to pursue a career in instrumental music by playing Brazilian Jazz / Fusion. However Angra appeared in his life and the rest is history. So I think Kiko has more of that language in his musical vocabulary. But the truth is that these guys are masters and they can play almost everything hehe

@@rafaell.atlanticforest603 yeah exactly. But I'm ambidextrous. I write with my right hand but favour more to left-hand when it comes to heavy task. I also play guitar right handed. So my left hand on fretboard seems quite easy for me to play with meanwhile my right hand need to improve more in picking technique even tho I write with my right hand.

Kiko! Thank you very much for this video!!!
chirping on the strings is a sound killer. good video even for a player, always good to revisit basics, Kiko is the best.
Glad to see you become a youtuber👍👍
Grande Kiko! Vamos aprendendo contigo. Realmente afeta o resultado sonoro. Obrigado pela aula!
Obrigado pela dicas como sempre!
Wow, Kiko..this was something I have been struggling with for so much time now...how to sound cleaner in the way I pick the strings? Exactly, I have always struggled against those scratchy overtones and I had never thought of the angle, I will try to incorporate that to my playing, thank you so very much!! I have to be honest, that initially I thought: Oh, no, Kiko, please don´t tell me you are one of those guys who think there is only ONE right way to hold the pick (there are way too many great guitarists out there with various grip techniques)..but then, you got me!! Genius!! Greetings from a fan from El Salvador!!
kiko provides access to all information thx kiko
Crazy! You're the maestro Kiko.
Salut ! Best lessons from one of the best guitarist!
I like so much the form in that you explain this things, since the best easy to the more complex, always have a gentil tone, and clear and simply form to the explain. Greetings from Chile, from the amateur guitarrits a a great master that you are . PD: sorry for my english, is a middle rudimental.
You are the best kiko!

Thank you so much kiko! my tone sounds better! no more scratchy sound.
Muito bom Kiko!
Awesome. Thanks for doing these Kiko. So cool of you.
Great video kiko
I've tried your picking position and I can say it is amazing. I will just add that, as an intermediate player, tone is not the biggest benefit for me. Having the pick/plectrum flat keeps hand much more relaxed and the pick position makes accidentally touching nearby strings more unlekely. I immediately improved my spread and cleanliness!!! Valeu irmão!
you are a legend mate!
Great video(s), Kiko! I'm really becoming a big fan of you! You are a genius guitarist! I always wondered, how you deal with pinch harmonics, holding the pick like this. It could fall out of your hands easily, since you hold the pick just at the edge.
Thanks Kiko! 🤘
I went to school for classical piano as a pretty tense player. It takes work to undo but it is definitely a critical step. I'm trying to get into more advanced guitar and notice the same tendencies. I can promise that putting the time in (no matter how much it takes) to loosen up and eliminate tension in your joints from the shoulder down will make you an infinitely better player. I don't know why this is, but I can assure you!
No começo achei estranho, mas, pensando dessa forma, faz todo o sentido!!
Thanks, Kiko!
Thank you sir

I've been watching your videos recently. I'm 30 and want to learn to play guitar. Might be too old to learn but I might give it a shot. Hoping to get enough information and confidence before I find a guitar to buy. Anyway thanks for posting these videos for free.
Thanks Kiko.
Thanks Kiko :)
I play mostly open-handed but for the faster lead stuff I pretty much always close my hand. There are a lot of different ways for using the pick for example downward and upward pickslanting.
Dicas top!!!
Thank you DUDE!But sometimes my pick slides away, what to do?I've played finger style for many yearsBut now more plectrum style and i'm learning now, tapping and sweep picking. What to do.

Gracias Kiko. I’m having trouble getting the pick in the right position for pinched harmonics.
My master kiko. I'm a left handed too but i learn guitar right handed too 🤩
As I've improved at guitar I noticed how similar mine and kikos habits are. I'm not where near the technical or musical level as him but little things like how we hold the pick, guitar faces and weird things like that are very similar

Thanks for this video i can play faster at an angle but playing parallel just sounds so much cleaner and pure harder to play though lol
Hey Kiko, thanks for the content! I am a lefty who is struggling to do tremolo picking playing a right handed guitar. Were you slow in the beginning... like, struggling for consistent 16ths at 130bpm? I am almost switching to a left hand guitar.
Excelente video!

I'm a bass player. I play with a pick more than anything. But especially when I was start I used to rest my hand on the bridge and anchor my pinkie on the G string and play like that. I still do it but not as much anymore. Now I'm more on the pickup but still anchor the g sometimes. lol
Eu lembro de vc falando pra mim "Guitaru Picko" hahahaha.. só pq tenho olho puxado hahahaha
There is no doubt, the parallel position is better for articulating the evenness of sound. If you don’t hold the pick in a parallel position to the strings, you induce more drag on the pick and that creates inconsistencies in volume, tone and possibly timing, too.
HOLLY SHIT...you said you are left handed??...I'm left handed too and when i started playing everyone told me you should have bought a left handed guitar because i well eventually hit my limits and i wont be able to make progress..AND HERE YOU ARE!!!
TOP
you should try Jazz III picks
Wish I could be used to holding the pick like you, it would reduce the scratching sound.
okay so following from the picture how exactly do we bend our neck in the perfect angle to hit the high E string while holding the pick on our forehead and with enough practice do you think i would play smoke on the water...
Man ive been searching for so long for another lefty who plays right handed
Is there anywhere to be found what string action is Kiko’s preference?
Tittle: how to hold the pick Also Kiko: 👌
I've noticed that the older I get the more pic I have sticking out from my grip. Thank you.
For playing very fast picking at an angle would reduce the friction a little.
i love you
Should I hold pick Tigthly or Loosely, between Index and Thumb
How to you make effective harmonics with that technique?
It blows my mind when getting to know that you hold pick like that.. All tutorial on the world told us to hold pick with an angle. But parallel?! Wow.. A breakthrough to me. And,, with only the edge of pick you touch,, won't the pick will be thrown?!
