Get a Behaved Dog by Celebrating Milestones! #41

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

When you get a puppy or dog, what are your expectations of your new family member? Do you have a vision of how your dog will fit into your home? What does it look like, and how do you convey your expectations to your dog? You can deepen the bond with your dog by knowing what your basics, manners and extras are.
In the episode you'll hear:
• All the things you probably don’t want your dog to do.
• How expectations set people up for success and why that relates to your dog.
• Why you need to know how you want your dog to behave.
• The milestones you can set for your life with your dog.
• Why there are three areas of focus for your dog to meet your expectations.
• The basics of sleeping through the night, not going to the bathroom in the house, not biting and not destroying stuff.
• How manners should be an area of focus once the basics are met.
• Why teaching your dog a trick and retrieve helps in your life together.
• All the extras you can introduce in your life with your dog.
• How the more you welcome your dog into your heart the more milestones you can set to deepen your bond.
• Why milestones are something you and your dog reaching together.
• How exercise reduces your dog’s naughty behaviours.

I just acquired a new puppy. While working on puppy games my older dog (8) came peeling into the kitchen and performed each one as if we never stopped needing them. AND when I indicated that the next task would be for the puppy, I said, "This will be for the Puppy - touch", she TOUCHED THE PUPPY ON THE HEAD! I love the structure and help you've been over the years. The games are back in the routine. Who knew she'd like to play even after all the skills are mastered and we've moved on to working at the barn and living our lives?

I think one of the manners i would like to focus on in the next months are a good recall and loose leash walking. These 2 will improve a lot my and my dogs life

Thank you Susan so much. I am getting a new Havanese puppy in 3 weeks. I have been binge watching your podcast on KZread this weekend. Can you tell me what program I should join to be the best puppy mama I can be to have a well behaved Fur Baby in my life? I had an abilitating stroke and need step by step instructions for her to help me and I help her. I want it all, giggle. I want Her not to jump on visitors, leave a pill if I drop it, become potty trained, prepare her to visit the vet and to let me groom her hair, do some fun tricks as well as come when called and be quiet on my bad days. Her name is Angelita and I want her to become my little angel. Thanks for your advice. Love your pod cast and the way you help us all relate to humans as well as puppies.

    1. Loose leash walking (getting better, but she still has those moments where she decides to go in whichever direction she finds something of interest and trip/pull me... at best), 2. Occasional jumping-at-us attempts (turning our backs to her didn't work, considering she still has them, I guess, and neither did the removal of her paws off of us?), 3. Not staying in her bed until called but getting up from time to time as if trying to call us to take her for a walk or pay attention to her, sometimes even straight up coming to poke us with her nose (what length of time is it reasonable to expect them to stay there for, anyway? And how do I achieve that without it making her having to ask permission to go and drink water, for example?), 4. Crate training (she hates being closed inside when we leave the house so she howls non-stop and she even chewed her tail tip off a few times - she also wouldn't touch the stuffed kongs until we come back, but is completely fine if left outside of it in the apartment), 5. Still having issues in differentiating left spin from the right one, in spite of working on that forever, with distractions, and in different settings🤦‍♀ ... the list goes on... 😅

Susan a milestones that I have given up on is my dogs don’t excessively bark at things going on outside, when there inside the house. I literally don’t know how to achieve it. We live in a bungalow with a glass side, my neighbours dogs run down the side of our house while they take the bins out and my dogs go into a frenzy. The sound of the bins is a big trigger now. Would love a podcast on that.

I have 2 dogs. First thing in the morning, we check p-mail for 20 minutes, have breakfast, and then I start work at home. But one of my dogs wants more, paws at me, climbs up on me, wants in and out of the door, and barks crazy at the neighbourhood dogs/sounds. Help please.
