Another way to practice this is the class mode on websites like sketchdaily and line of action where you have 10 seconds to draw the pose and then you'll slowly get more time for the poses. Of course it's always best to draw from life, but sometimes you just don't have the time or energy to go out and imo these websites offer a great alternative :)

I have always loved looking at these kind of drawing without knowing what it's called. I have been practicing what you refer to as academic drawing - thought that might give me good practice, motivation, skills. And am enjoying it. But what instinctively appeals to me is what you are showing and how you are showing. Today I bought a newsprint paper after watching your videos! Amazing videos and work. Thanks

Wonderful!! Let me know how you get on!! Yes, this kind of drawing is an excellent practice to improve your mark making and your own expression through your drawing. I can't recommend it highly enough. Academic drawing obviously builds a solid foundation for correct proportion etc, and gesture is a really good flip side to loosen up. Thank you so much for watching and supporting this channel!! I really appreciate it! :)

Thank you so much for your videos! They’ve been so helpful! Question: When doing gesture drawing should you always push the pose further than the actual pose? Thank you once again!!

  • @Drawing-Life

@davidcreativee Hi David, thanks for watching! And thanks for the great question...My answer: I tend to push the pose as much as possible, because in fact, drawing what I think is the dynamic quality of the pose without exaggeration, usually falls way too short of capturing the real thing! If that makes sense.... also, when "pushing the pose" it's more about pushing the line of action, not the forms of the figure, and I think in gesture drawing you can be as free as you like when it comes to expressing the energy or line of action. I hope this helps!!
