Supercar was a vertical takeoff and landing craft invented by Prof. Rudolph Popkiss and Dr. Horatio Beaker, and piloted by Mike Mercury. On land it rode on a cushion of air rather than wheels. Jets in the rear allowed it to fly like a jet and retractable wings were incorporated in the back of the car. Retrorockets on the side of the car slowed the vehicle. The car used "Clear-Vu", which included an inside television monitor allowing the occupant to see through fog and smoke. The vehicle was housed in a laboratory and living facility at Black Rock, Nevada, U.S.A. In the show's first episode, "Rescue", the Supercar crew's first mission is to save the passengers of a downed private plane. Two of the rescued, young Jimmy Gibson and his pet monkey, Mitch, are invited to live at the facility and share in the adventures.

You knew how to have fun.😊
I was 8 when this show was on and I always watched it
If they redid these Andersons shws as live action they would be just horrible, the puppets and animation make them charming. Sort of the toy set every kid dreamed of having.

@Frank Swimbladder rubbish! It was great! I mean it's missing the puppet charm but the heart of the show is still there.

@@jamesc8968 I wish the models for the Thunderbirds in the new show didn't look so clean myself. They lacked that industrial used look that Gerry Anderson was a stickler for.

This was one of my first ever memories. It was etched into my brain when, as a baby, I was propped up on the sofa while this was on STV. My mum would use the free time to prepare the family Sunday tea in peace while my attention was fully occupied. I would try to sing the theme tune but my mouth would only come out with a tuneless "hapaca" while my brain tried frantically keep up with the lyrics. (Babies can understand a lot more than you think, speach comes after.) This was the beginning of my love of all things science fiction, for which I will be forever grateful. ❤
Philosophical heads up: I'm 66. This was magnificent in the sixties to a young kid with 2 TV channels to play with. Now, of course, it's ludicrous. But I remember the flow of inspiration it offered back then... Nothing fundamental really changes. Interesting to imagine what kids born today will find inspiring and (fundamental) in 2050?
Notice how Barry Grey blends the roar of the turbines of the altitude-climbing Supercar into the opening chords of the theme music. The man was a musical genius!

I've Used To Love Watching Gerry Anderson's SuperCar Back In 1961. X
Watched this in 1963. Ran on WGN TV Saturday mornings at 9am. Then I'd change over to WMAQ TV (NBC) to watch Fireball XL5 at 9:30am. Double dose of Gerry Anderson.
Watched this as a little kid while my Mom was in the kitchen baking cinnamon buns. Never thought i'ld own it on dvd. Great memories.
One of my very earliest TV watching memories. :)
Dammit, 60 years on and we still don't have a car that can travel through space and underwater.

Well, there is a Tesla in orbit and one could travel from the ocean surface to the bottom so we have progressed a little.

I got tired of waiting and bought a Tesla. It’s definitely the closest thing that I could find and I love it.

But there are plenty of UAP/UFO'S that can.
I was born in 1960, in Detroit 🇺🇲. Right next to Windsor, Canada. CBC ch.9.. somehow I've remembered that song and the car diving into the water all my life.. it wasn't until the internet, around the year 2000, that I discovered the supercar image and song again !!!
A favorite staple when I was a kid.....
way ahead of its time...I was 10 yrs old back then....
Loved this show. I knew the song by heart and just sang along with it again in this video. Almost 60 years later I still remember it!
Oh how I remember!!!
Gerry Anderson's puppet shows got better with every successive series. He and Arthur Provis changed the way puppets were filmed but when Arthur teamed up with Roberta Leigh to make Space Patrol (which tried to be more scientifically accurate), Gerry went off and created his own shows. They had a unique style and in some ways cinematic using techniques he had planned to use in the feature films he and Arthur never got a chance to make. As sophisticated as some of the later series became, Supercar, Fireball Xl5 and Stingray are still favourites for many people.

Roberta Leigh and Arthur Provis did wonders with space patrol on b-all budget, helped along by FC Judd who did the electronic music, by some miracle an almost complete set of episodes on film were found still in her possession decades later, it's now available to buy,
SuperCar Deserves a reboot!
i think calling it a car is a bit of an understatement.

No, it isn't. If anything, it gives a whole new meaning to the term "Supercar."
I am watching all the opening titles clips in sequence and can't stop smiling. Simply happiness! Most of those series were transmitted and re ran time after time during the whole 70's up to mid 80's here in Buenos Aires. There was only one tv set at the living room, valves and black and white of course, connected to a lousy aerial that received four and a half channels... ;-)))
Huge gerry anderson fan 😊
Oh to be 10 years of age again!! (Most satisfactory Mike!)
I always liked the startup sequence, firing up the thrusters! so cool
By the time Stingray and Thunderbirds came around, the Andersons had worked out that a handsome male lead was a good idea. Mike Mercury was, shall we say, unconventional-looking.

Fond Memories.
I’d seen Torchy, Twizzle and Four Feather Falls, but this was something else! I was absolutely hooked, and I still love the imagination that went into it. And thanks for the theme song, which I’d forgotten.
Loved it!
Gerry Anderson got the idea for this when he saw an American Ford Concept Car at the Motor Show and thought "All it needs is a set of wings....."
Nice to take a walk down memory lane.👍👍👍
UBER CRAMPED! Awesome series, like everything G. Anderson created. Jim Henson was another. Both were "Imagineers"- Imagination Pioneers. Miss them, both.
The hand pulling the model’s wire belongs to special effects master Derek Meddings.

SUPERCAR!
There were some sonic booms in the last day or so over the UK, I thought it might be Supercar.
They say that the supercar is waterproof
Geez. I’m so old, and corny 😂
Yep, watched it
I seem to remember that I had a supercar either made by Matchbox or Dinky?
@DavidBDavis-lz7bt

I remember Dinky made several models of Anderson vehicles: Thunderbirds, Joe90's car, SHADO Moonbase Interceptors, Moonbase Alpha Eagle-1 Transporters, etc..., but I'm not sure about Supercar. Matchbox seems likely, but I'd have to look it up. I have seen an image of a Supercar miniature under the Johnny Lightning brand, on Google Images, so that might be a step in the right direction.

Personally I prefer the back-projected real sky to the rolling painting used in the later supermarionation series.
I'm glad I never came to came face to face with those goldfish the size of whales 😅😅😅😅😅
at lesat mike mercury is wearing his seatbelt, even in 1962.....
Loved this show as a kid. Only just noticed that thunderclap at the end sounds exactly like the same sound effect used for another 1960's ITV series title sequence, 'The prisoner'. It's certainly much more bassy and powerful on 'Supercar' but I reckon it's from the same effects archive. kzread.info/dash/bejne/f2eAtptxpbLdk84.html

Seubakah!!!
Where can I get the chords for these songs Barry Gray did for Gerry Anderson ?
I can't decide which protrudes farthest from the pilot's face: his nose or his eyebrows?
