This is what European trains should be about: express or Intercity consists, made up of coaches pulled by a locomotive, with a restaurant car, linking together the Continent’s most important cities during the day or the night! Great video!

Very nice video. Sorry to point that the Rhine river is not the border in Basel. Basel Bad is still Basel, in Switzerland. The border is a few meters before the station of Weil am Rhein. The station Basel Bad itself is managed by the DB, but it's still on swiss territory.

You are correct. However, there is a D/CH border within Basel Badischer Bahnhof. Taking the SBB train from Basel Hbf to Base Bad, you will even see sometimes some customs personal. Within Basel Bad itself, the boundary is clearly marked but usually not manned. Schengen makes crossing border easily -- a few years ago, however, some Swiss issued visas were not Schengen visa and I have watched some scenes where people were caught illegally crossing, be it in Basel or in the Neuchâtel -- Paris TGV.

@@alphanet72 The Basel Badischer Bahnhof is build on Swiss territory and only leased by the Deutsche Bahn. Customs are still located at this station but no marks anymore. The marks they had on the ground did not mark the boundary between German and Swiss part of the Station. They only marked the control and waiting points for border and custom control.
The DB Class 101 has some of the largest wheels I’ve ever seen on a locomotive. I was looking at one of the units right there at Basel SBB. Such an iconic sound as well.

Nice video! I happened to be in the panorama coach on this trip as well, I was the guy in the blue shirt diagonally opposite you on the right hand side of the train after Basel :). I was on the train from Zürich all the way to Osnabrück to go home in the Netherlands, ending a trip that took me all the way to Sicily. I found the seats and the ride to be very comfortable, even on an 8 hour long ride like I did. The train was a bit late as we were stuck somewhere between Mannheim and Mainz as you showed, but my connecting train to the Netherlands was late as well in classic German fashion, so that was not an issue. I"m very glad I took this Eurocity instead of the fastest route from Milan to the Netherlands! It is actually possible to reserve a seat in the panorama coach, however that is only the case if you reserve a seat online at DB itself. There you can select a seat using a seat map. The panorama coach is coach number 263. I did it this way, also so I could get a reservation on the IC from Osnabrück to the Netherlands on the same itinerary. Your comment is true for other operators/booking services than DB, they do allocate you a random 1st class seat which might not be in the panorama coach.
on our river cruise in 2017, got to get close and photograph trains leaving the cologne station, while we were docked about one every minutes, could see them crossing over the bridge. loved the ride you took, brought back memories of what we saw on our cruise.

Regarding the Coaches you saw after leaving Koblenz, those are former Rheingold/TEE Coaches that belong to the DB Museum that is located in Koblenz which i highly recommend visiting when you get the Chance. What a beautiful train! So relaxing and meditative. Thank you Thibault for this beautiful video.
Thank you. Wonderful memories for me. I traveled that line years ago and the scenery along the Rhine was unforgettable. I remember Karlsruhe Hbf (scary as I was in there alone at night once) and Cologne Hbf (I hung out there a lot because it was fun and energetic). Love this channel.
As a fact, is not when you cross the Rhine River on train at Basel when you enter Germany, rather after approx 1-2 km after the Basel Badischer Bahnhof is the border.
Thx for taking us with you on this scenic trip. 👍🏾😎
I arrived in Basel after a journey from Calais in 1948, bound for Lugano. The contrast after war ravaged France was startling, Switzerland was a pleasant shock, clean electric trains, as much food as you wanted, no rationing…..and Lugano- just perfect. If you have watched the Burt Lancaster film The Train, a lot of the stations in France were those we passed through.
Ahhhh, the memories. Thank you for the wonderful journey through my homeland. I miss it and will never see my birth country again. So, it's nice to go along the journey once more even if it is only by video.
Nice video. Love that panorama coach! And the dining car. Beautiful scenery. Thanks Thibault😀💚

Hello sarac
Bravo! Wonderful video!
Very beautiful video. My family and I traveled through Germany by rail in 1998. The trains were so punctual in those days that one could adjust times on their watches based on train arrival and departure times. German train journey is one of the best in the world, and seeing Rhine River brought back wonderful memories of 2 weeks of travel by train. Of course, the USA has a long way to go to make a train journey more enjoyable. Two weeks on Amtrak in 2015 was OK .
Great trip report
That line is beautiful. I still think the line between Prague and Dresden is just as beautiful if not better. I don't know why. Still, both are amazing ❤
Last June I had taken a cruise on the Rhine (Basel to Amsterdam) and had wondered about the trains on the banks. Thank you for the lovely view from the train. I started at Zurich (flying in from the US) and loved your showing the station because I know the station well. The SBB people are extraordinary and one even held back the train departure as I (a seventy-ish out-of-shape person) was running to make it. As soon as he waved me into the first class (the nearest coach) we were off our way. We had first visited Switzerland in 1986 when we had taken various scenic journeys. This time I took the Bernina Express and visited the Swiss Museum of Transport at Lucerne. Same efficiency almost immediately after the COVID restrictions were lifted. The SBB mobile app is the best app I have ever used.
Reminded me of my trip to the Moselle in the 80s. And onto the Rhine with my rail pass. Stunning 🤩 ❤

I travelled on a few Eurocity trains, including some that no longer exist such as the Venice-Budapest one. As far, my best experiences on these trains were on the Basel-Milan via the Gotthard basis tunnel, and the Munich-Bologna one. Lovely sceneries. Definitely need to travel once on the rhine valley
Great, i just happened to be in Germany a few days back and used the ICE train to travel between Frankfurt and Baden Baden. It was a pleasant experience. With love from India.
Damn! I figured out when you showed the map of your trip that you were going to go through Mannheim and Lampertheim. I lived in a satellite village of Lampertheim called Lampertheim-Rosengarten and went through Lampertheim alot as a kid, so I was really hoping to see Lampertheim as you passed. It's too bad that you didn't get footage of it, but it's still very nice to see Germany from your perspective. I watch your videos, vicariously, to remember Germany again and almost as motivation. Thank you so much for what you do, Simply Railway.

Great video as always Thibault, many thanks. We took this train from Koln to Basel🎉last September. Everything was fine until Karlsruhe, where the service was suddenly terminated due, apparently, to a casualty on the line ahead. We had to join an already crowded DB ICE as far as Offenburg then got turfed off that as well. I managed to sort out a route to Freiburg Im Breisgau, then to Basel Bad, on local DB trains, where we got the bus to Basel SBB and on to Zurich and Bellinzona (our destination). We were 5 hours late arriving. Thank God for the dining car on the Zurich to Bellinzona train where we got ourselves a hot meal.

They have something like the Royal Scotsman, maybe others. They just separate in touristic trains, and people who want to be fast. Scenic route and fast route are not always the same, so that normal trains could act as attraction.
Incredible. The scenery is amazing and the parts along the Rhine remind me of my home line Amtrak's Empire Service and Metro-North's Hudson line along the Hudson River. Wish we had electrification and the Empire Service, Adirondack and Ethan Allen had an equivalent to those incredible panoramawagons. They're single-deck so no problem with the clearances into Penn Station. Too bad the U.S. is so backards with trains and transit. Hope to take this trip someday in my life.

At SBB counter if you say panoramic seat we can put this in our system and you can reserve it specifically. We can not book a seat out of a seat map (like DB within Germany in ICE or RJX within Austria) but if it is this consist (i think it formerly ran to Munich before the ETR610 Astoro Pendolino replacement and now itˋs sometimes also in usage on IC3 between Chur - Zurich). But if it is this consist we can add this wish and see if there is space left in our intern system. So feel free to book with us ;) but veery nice video man 😊
👏 Nice travel report ! About the Rhine river: Towards Germany it's a border water - roughly between the two Schaffhausen(Schaffhausen-Switzerland and Schaffhouse-près-Seltz) ... more precisely between Constance and Lauterbourg. Thanks to the Rhine the ancient Council town of Constance was spared in WWII - in contrast to Schaffhausen ... Also Kleinbasel was not spared by the Allied Forces. Kleinbasel hosts some of the tallest manmade structures of Switzerland - St-Chrischona(tallest tower) and Bau2(tallest building). Many places left of the Rhine waters have a strong roman/catholic tradition(Cologne, Mainz, Koblenz for example). The Panorama coach is - as mentioned in numerous comments - also available on the Transalpin train. Not less scenic is the classic Gotthard route - though just available during the summer season.
Looks great
as someone who lives in bavaria it never ceases to amaze me how flat the north of germany is! my brain simply can't comprehend the thought of looking out the window and not seeing mountains in the distance :)
It is most interesting, Thibault, that your "Panamanora Wagon" that you rode on appears to be quite similar to Amtrak's sightseer lounge cars - great that the railroads provide these opportunities for sightseeing.
That's super line across the my city. Well done friend. Need to colonge - Milan long way..
The car reminds me of Amtraks sightseer lounge. I didn’t realize Europe had anything like that. On Amtrak though, you can sit there for free, open to everyone on the train. Unlike this, where you have to buy a ticket for it.
Love this vagon. Start in Sommer 2023, OBB will use this vagon for train Graz Hbf - Przemyśl Główny via Kraków !

Really nice train.
It's not so long ago that I took the EC Transalpin (Graz to Zürich) also in a panorama car. In this train the restaurant is operated by DoN (Austria) so a bit more affordable. And it's also a spectacular line, with the valleys of Enns and Salzach, the line along the lake of Zell am See, passing several skiing areas close by and then going up the Inn before going up the Arlberg and down on the other side, after a short unspectacular section through Liechtenstein rolling along two wonderful Swiss lakes (Walensee, Zürichsee) before reaching Zürich. I can definitely recommend this one as well. By the way on the site of the Austrian railways (ÖBB ticketing) you can reserve a seat specifically in the panorama car. Where did you book this one?
5:10 reminds me of the sightseer lounge on amtrak superliners with those panoramic windows

The left rhine route is still crazily busy, just mostly with regional trains and cargo. But it's very much overloaded with trains.
These wagons you asked for can be parts of the TEE trains. When the IC’s came up, these wagons were the first class. They all have these windows “steamed” with gold for sun protecting ( and broadcast protecting too😉)
Nice video!!! I could take this train for travelling back home from Zwitserland to Amsterdam, after cycling the Eurovelo 15/Rhine cycle route. Largely the same route for train and bike. Or the Euronight, taking a sleeping compartment. What a choice to make🤔
