My grandmother was an organist in Dresden. After the bombing the church was destroyed as well as the organ. She did pick one of the flue pipes from one of the Prinzipal stops. It was bent and dented but still produced a sound. When I took up my first post as organist at the age of sixteen, she gave this flue pipe to me for my birthday. I still have it in a display cabinet with my collection of Steiff bears, the oldest from 1907 when she was born.

@@brucemarsico6, that's classic "whataboutism" and it's not a good look. Just because the Germans were barbaric to Leningrad doesn't make it correct or OK for us Americans to be barbaric to Dresden. There are monuments in "Leningrad" to German atrocities, and as an American I would like to see a monument in Dresden to American atrocities. It's very simple-minded to think that Americans have always been "the good guys" throughout history. Agent Orange and Vietnam, anyone? The only country to nuke millions of people? Twice! Wake up, dude.

@@kylewit924 The only problem with Prague is that they speak Czech there and I'd like to practice my German. Czech is not a pretty language (to my American ear) but perhaps I'm a bad judge, as many Americans don't think even German sounds nice.

The Leipzig - Dresden railway you were using was actually the first long distance railway in continental europe (1837-39)

As a Dresdener, I must confess that your documentary is just inspiring and great. You did a very good job here. Just one remark: it would have been more balanced to include also parts not at the centre of the city (Blue Wonder, Pillnitz e.g.) because many travellers also enjoy to see some nature/parks/landscape in easy reach from the city centre.

What other places do you suggest? We were in Dresden just after the river tours to Meissen stopped for the season. So disappointed. . But when returning,would like to see the neighboring areas you mention. We did travel to Bautzen, where the medieval towers were so striking and also learned more about other aspects of the history there. Would appreciate your other suggestions.

I visited Dresden a few years ago and was SHOCKED at how beautifully restored it is. Having read "Slaughterhouse Five" my expectation was a dull communist outpost. Boy was I surprised!

yep--rebuilt in astonishing detail, just like British smashed cities. Of course, we didn't benefit from the Nazi gold that was magically discovered for the rebuild of Germany.

It was rebuild by private investors, who wanted to avoid tax-costs. Nothing to say against this, but it was not the money of the state.

Ich habe 5 Jahre in Dresden gelebt, studiert und gearbeitet. Das ist jetzt 23 Jahre her. Den Wiederaufbau der Frauenkirche, bzw. den Anfang des Wiederaufbaus, habe ich erlebt , genauso wie die ersten Benefizkonzerte zugunsten des Wiederaufbaus. Ich habe die Frauenkirche aus dem offenen Dachstuhl des Coselpalais nebenan , das damals ebenfalls wieder aufgebaut wurde , besichtigen können. Gewohnt habe ich in der Nähe des Hauptbahnhofs in einem Haus, dass nach dem Krieg aus den Ziegelsteinen der Kriegstrümmer wieder aufgebaut wurde. Zuvor hatte ich mit Freunden eine Dachgeschosswohnung in Löbtau, einem Stadtteil von Dresden, bei der die Türzargen verkohlt waren, weil im WK2 die Brandbomben ins Dach einschlugen (der Enkel des damaligen Besitzers sagte uns das). Ich liebe diese Stadt und die Zeit, die ich dort verbringen durfte. Danach lebte ich in Frankfurt am Main und heute in Nürnberg. Es ist schön, dass versucht wird, die Kriegswunden historizierend zu schließen. Gleiches gilt für mich für das sog. Humboldtforum in Berlin. Die Moderne ist bzgl. des Stadtbildes leider oft enttäuschend und uniform. Insofern werde ich bei den Bildern der Frauenkirche, der Mädlerpassage, des Römers und der Nürnberger Burg immer wieder emotional. Danke für dieses Video.

I love Rick Steves' Europe series. This is the first time I could provide a "like" and a comment. A former co-worker of mine actually visited the rebuilt Church of Our Lady - and she showed us photos; she could not stop talking about it. I love that people can come together to resurrect the beautiful centuries-old architecture that defined their cities. I especially love to see people happy again after all the persecutions and oppression they went through are gone. Wish I could travel and know several languages - just to make friends with the people I meet. And by the way - All the treasures of the Wettin dynasty - absolutely beautiful!

Deutschland is one of my favorite countries in Europe. This country is so schön

Incredible video, Rick! Very informative and entertaining. "Rick Steve's Europe" is by far the best travel show airing in America-- especially for historical and philosophy buffs. I love that Rick touches on religion as well and not just because I'm religious-- I liked that piece of the show when I was an atheist. Anyway, I just wanted to say you have a great show Rick. I hope it airs for many years to come. It's by far the best travel show, nothing comes close! Five out of five stars.

Love Rick Steves. This is one of the few English language videos that shows Dresden in a positive light. The city is so much more than just a bombing raid and Pegida.

In an attic of my passing parent's home I picked up a box of old photos and came upon a charming postcard picture of a beautiful city by a river photographed in 1890 and curiously wondered where in the world that idyllic place could be. I stared at it for long moments wishing history could turn back the clock. It states Dresden, a city in Germany. Someday, I hope to see it in person. ----from California.

Dresden is one of the most beautiful cities I lived ever before. The scenery alongside the Elbe is fascinating, especially in spring and autumn. 👍 Most exciting is the moment when the lights on the old buildings along the banks of the Elbe are turned on at dusk,which is really unparalleled splendid and brilliant.

They didn't. The tiles are ceramic and were unaffected by the heat of the firestorm. The mural is around 95% original.

great video of the Saxon museum craft pieces. Just awesome what they did in those times. I watch Mr Steve's videos before I go to any of those cities. Just helpful to budget my time for what I want to see.

Once again, Rick, thanks to an accurate historical presentation. I visited Dresden in 2008 and fell in love with the city. I will not judge those who ordered its destruction during the war but neither can I justify it. I can only enjoy the fact that the city was rebuilt to its former glory.

My best friend lives in Dresden and works as an Art Historian. I plan to visit him in the summer so this guide really comes in handy. For all literature lovers: The Dark Mill from the beloved children's book classic "Krabat" which is based on a sorbian legendary figure can be found in Schwarkollm. For all "3 Nuts for Cinderella"-Fans, the Castle Moritzburg is not far from Dresden. I can also recommend Meissen. Famous for it's porcellain.

Very fascinating videography of Saxony. We visited Berlin in order to get a taste of Germany but really regret we did not have time to visit these areas. It's very fascinating to visit former East German areas and notice the variance in architecture with older or Western Germany. It's also interesting to see these large war memorials. In parallel in the Southeastern U.S. many grandiose war memorials were built around 1910-1915.

I visited Dresden shortly after the wall came down. It was a very enjoyable visit. Everything was less commercial then. Now I see it has changed greatly, very "prettied" up. I don't know how it would be to visit again, in light of COVID-19, which I expect will linger for some time to come. Leipzig also was unique. I remember visiting the Battle of Nations monument and walking inside. I enjoy these travel videos, because frankly I don't have the stamina that I used to have, and they enable me to refresh my memory without any bother or expense.

Lovely show. Any time I need a bit of an uplift I just turn on a Rick Steves show and drift along with it.

@@johnedwards7542 The destruction of old historical Coventry's centre - absolutely dreadful, terrible and unnecessary as it was - was never on such a gigantic scale as in Dresden or many other German cities. The UK, comparatively, never received such an utterly devasting force of air raids by any measure; the damage towards historical and architectural monuments done in Germany is - totally neutrally speaking - without comparison. It's just that many people don't know about it.

NorthSea 1981 Bombing at the time wasnt very precise, thats the reason why so much of Dresden was destroyed. And also, lets bot forget how germany bombed rotterdam, Kiew and especially Warsaw. After the war, over 90% of warsaw was destroyed. Dresden was nothing against that

Hi I am living in Dresden I love the city so much. There is the beautiful space where all the old buildings are and than there are shopping miles like Prager street for example. On the other side of the Elbe is Neustadt, the part with the cool restaurants and extraordinary ideas😊 The part of Dresden I‘m living in has buildings in the old style too, not only the centre is beautiful, suburbs too❤️❤️❤️ Looove Dresden ❤️❤️❤️

Other places in Saxony to visit: Görlitz (Inglorious Basterds & Grand Budapest Hotel and others were filmed here), Seiffen (town where Christmas decorations like the Nutcracker were invented and are still produced today) and Saxon Switzerland (National Park).

I have visited Leipzig four times during the last two decades. When Covid times are over, I plan to go back to this Musikstadt and include Dresden, as well.
