Germany introduces draft bill to step up deportations | DW News

The increasing number of migrants and refugees and the low number of deportations has become a major political issue in Germany, with the right-wing populists capitalizing on the anti-immigrant sentiment.
Chancellor Olaf Scholz announced a tougher asylum policy in a major interview with Germany's Spiegel magazine, in which he promised, "We must finally deport on a large scale those who have no right to stay in Germany." He called it unacceptable that deportation procedures often drag on for years.
Now, Interior Minister Nancy Faeser, a Social Democrat like the chancellor, wants to follow through on the pledge and has presented a bill that has been approved by the federal cabinet. She told reporters in Berlin on Wednesday that the reform of deportation procedures was only one step in a series of migration policies. "We are ensuring that people without the right to stay have to leave our country more quickly. In this way, we are strengthening society's support for the reception of refugees in Germany," she said.
She said the restrictive measures ensuring more and faster repatriations were necessary so Germany could fulfill its humanitarian responsibility for those needing protection from war and terror. "To protect the fundamental right to asylum, we must significantly limit irregular migration," Faeser said.
New rules for deportations
Faeser's bill provides for more powers for authorities to enforce deportations, especially of criminals and people smugglers. The bill's main points are:
Authorities will no longer notify individuals in advance of their imminent deportation, with the exception of families with young children.
In cases where the person in question lives in shared accommodation, police will be allowed to enter and search rooms other than the bedroom of the individual. According to the authorities, people have often evaded deportation by hiding in shared accommodation.
If a person does not have a passport to show, the authorities will also be able to search their private cell phone or lockers to establish their identity.
The maximum period of detention prior to deportation will be extended from 10 to 28 days to give the authorities more time to prepare for deportation.
Members of organized criminal groups in Germany can be deported, regardless of whether they have been convicted of a crime.
Germany's high number of refugees
Germany has taken in more than a million people seeking protection from President Vladimir Putin's war against Ukraine. On top of that, some 244,000 people from other countries applied for asylum last year; this year, that number could rise to 300,000.
But even those who have no grounds for political asylum or refugee status can often not be repatriated, if there is no country willing to take them in, or their country of origin is a war zone, or they themselves have serious health issues that cannot be treated in their countries of origin. Some people simply cannot be tracked down by authorities. Over 200,000 people fall into one of these categories.
According to the Interior Ministry, by the end of September, there were around 255,000 people living in Germany who were obliged to leave the country, of whom around 205,000 have a "tolerated status" (called a Duldung in German), meaning they are theoretically obliged to leave the country but cannot be deported.
According to the German Interior Ministry, by the end of September, 12,000 people had been returned to their countries of origin. Faeser now wants to speed up deportations. "Those who have no right to stay in Germany must leave our country again," she said.

I am an immigrant myself and i have now become a citizen in my new country. I believe that the most important thing is to assimilate with the new society that has adopted you as their own. It is extremely unfair to come to another country and not respect the local laws and customs there and start harping about human rights when those laws or customs are opposite of your own culture back home. You made the decision to move, now also make the decision to assimilate. No society can survive the mass immigration of people if they wont assimilate to the new land they are moving to.

Most immigrants do not think that way though. For example, in Canada we have to say happy holidays instead of merry Christmas in our schools because It offends immigrants. Makes no sense. They moved here and we have to change our cultures. Because of things like this people are fed up and nobody really likes each other.

The US Assimilates our immigrants and I think it's very smart to slowly introduce them to our customs, laws, freedoms, rights, etc. Trump made fatal mistakes when he withdrew our troops from Syria. When President Biden learned of Trump's release of 5000 Taliban terrorists and they were there already, he had to warn Iran not to harm the 3000 US soldiers we had there and push the agreement back to August. He saved the Aghanistans who helped our soldiers. They were staying at a resort near me and everyday I would see the children playing soccer with their big brother friends. Their parents smiling and watching them. Biden kept them there to Assimilate into our society, and it will work. Had Britain, Germany, etc done the same. There would not be high rape numbers or attacks. It's the truth.

Its an election stunt, a lie to try to get votes from AfD. Once elected they don't intend to do anything about it, the migration operation is enabled and financed by german government and it will not change. In 2 years in power they could not even legalise marijuana, much less they are going to do anything that really matters and needs very decisive action. The clock is ticking for Germany. Elections are just a facade to keep people thinking their opinion matter (it doesn't). The press only exist to keep people ignorant about what happens to them and their country (very bad things). Both things are only done so people don't revolt and don't resist.

This a) makes our streets (and society) safer; b) improves the reputation (and lives) of the well-integrated immigrants; c) lessens discrimination & racism based on bad experiences; and d) makes space for the ones truly in need (who can't get in cuz we're already full).

Germany and it's politics have real issues! I was working with a young man - about 25 y.o - back in 2018. He came from Ukraine after Russia invaded Ukraine in 2014 in the first time. He found himself a good job, rented an appartment, payed bills, taxes and so on. One day he just stopped coming to work. I asked my colleagues that had contact with him and they told me that he was arrested and deported because the asylum request was denied. I think he was making room for the others that don't work and don't want to, don't pay taxes and will not, just wait for the government to pay up benefits. Well done Germany !

Whats barely mentioned is that the goverment had to be dragged to these limited measures, kicking and screaming. If their falling popularity and recent failures at the elections wouldn't have spooked them, they would have continued dragging their feet. The fact that costs are rising, crimes are rising and that communities are just practically overwhelmed at every level, wasn't even considered by the goverment before

  • @Kelpie-sb5bi

This is a very important point, the government will probably try to make the implementation of these measures as slow and difficult as possible. Their stance on unregulated mass immigration hasn’t changed. I don’t understand why Germans keep electing people who seemingly have such an intense hatred for them.

It's always comical how people in Western Europe fight over the most minute thing possible. Maybe it lends some truth to the decadent West concept. 8% inflation is hard? You earn on avg 10 times as much as people from 3rd word country, while food price is only 3 times as expensive at most and staple food is basically equal.

Swedish minister of immigration proposed something similar last week. She also said that it has to be in cooperation with other EU members so we don’t get a situation as with the terror attack in Brussels against two Swedes in which the attacker had been deported from several EU countries but still remained inside the EU. She proposed the EU, or countries inside the EU who chose to cooperate on this, to open deportation centers outside of the union where all who are to be deported are moved to. I believe that’s a good idea.

The problem with these countries "deporting" the bad apples is that they are simply handed a deportation ORDER. So really, it's up to them whether or not the will comply. In most cases, they do not and decide to move to another EU country. The government never checks on them if they did leave. They should be taken to the airport and escorted all the way to the plane's entrance. This is what happened to the attacker in Belgium. He was ordered deported by 2 different EU countries but never left.
