That's only a part, the main reason might be the strict Corona policy that the government of Bavaria took in an area that depends on gastronomy. Also, a part of Germany which has many inhabitants who care about Nature, sustainability and ecology and new young voters or old ones who passed away during the worst part of the Corona crisis. I might be wrong in my analysis but I would also add that politics have become more polarized and extreme, the conservatives seem to get dissolved and the radical right, left and ecologist views seem to gain momentum.

More like the CDU having an abysmal campaign. Running a merkel-like campaign with a fairly "unmerkelian" candidate, focusing on the wrong political foe (the greens), and being completly oblivious to the base of the party.
