GERMANY: Detmold, city of culture
Detmold is better known as the city of culture in the Teutoburg Forest (Germany).
More than 600 historic buildings adorn the city. Small half-timbered houses alternate with proud plastered buildings.
Detmold is the city of culture for everyone. The Regional Theatre Detmold, the Highschool for Music and the Summer Theatre offer a broad spectrum of performances ranging from classic to modern.
A varied programme of open-air events in a historic ambience, such as the Summer Stage and the International Street Theatre Festival, cabaret and more, has secured Detmold`s reputation as a cultural centre.
The Literature Office OWL, numerous museums, schools, colleges and the Lippe State Library all contribute to a fertile cultural climate.
In the centre of the old town, the Residence Castle, built in the Weser Renaissance style, imparts an unforgettable look in the past.
Detmold is located directly at the ridge of mountains of the Teutoburg Forest.

I was there as a British soldier in the 80’s, started my love for Germany! Been many times since, wonderful city, and country!

So was my cousin. Hobart barracks. Went to his daughter’s wedding there in 1989, just a few months before the Berlin Wall came down. We were going to visit it but decided to leave it for another time.

@@ChrisOwenGuitarI was stationed at Hobart Barracks! Visited there a couple of years ago, a lot of the buildings are still there but it’s no longer military, brought back a lot of memories! Obligatory visit to Hermannsdenkmal, still wonderful!

@@garryclark4653 Yeah, good old Hermannsdenkmal. We must have taken about 20 photos of that when we visited. I also remember a zoo/safari park and an eagle park not that far away. I know we drove there from Detmold.

Hey Garry I used to play pool with british soldiers in the 80's in Detmold. 😁 A wonderful time
OMG....That fountain in the main square...I used to play with my toy boat in that as a boy in the 70's while staying at my grandparents house on Grunstrasse. This video has brought back a few memories.

I just did some research and on my grandmothers side her family came from the city in 1848 to the United States. Thanks for posting.

Den Palaisgarten habe ich auf Video. Auch Aufnahmen vom Umland und dem Donoper Teich im Winter.
Visited this lovely place way back in 1959 when I was stationed in Minden, met some very nice people and had a great time in the local bars etc. Had a friend Inge Detering who lived here and kept in contact after I left the Army, but sadly lost contact later! Have great and fond memories which were brought back by this site.
worked in the Detmold area in the 70-80s , used to use a Bar called the Das Ding , & the Fuchs Bau , & im Kino met a girl called Adelheide Fritz who i was fond of , i often wonder what became of her ,
