That is because now the train is empty, but after a few stops it might get full and there will be a whole lot of mess when everyone has to go to their actual seats. Better have order, so you don't run into situations like this.

True.. learned this the hard way when I was new in the UK. There were young people already sitting on ours.. my friend and I were too timid to ask them to move so we sat on empty ones. After a few stops, a family came and were verbally berating us for sitting on their seats. Only then did we ask for our seats back. But tbh.. if it was only a few minutes away we would have stood up rest of the journey.

The thing with that is, you have to claim your seat within 15 Minutes after the trains departure. So Imagine you sit somewhere else because your reserved seat is already taken, but after a few stations someone asks you to move because they have reserved the seat you’re in now. Then theoretically you can’t go back and claim your actual seat, if more than 15 minutes have passed. And worst case is you might end up having to stand even though you reserved a seat and paid extra for it.

  • @abracadabra3428

@@Lua-um4gz you can tell at which station a person entered the train by their ticket. So if it’s been more than 15 minutes after the departure from the station, the seat is gone. Also there are little signs either on the seats or above them where you can see, if a seat is reserved and for which part of the journey, let’s say from Hannover to Munich. So if you get in the train before Hannover, you can sit there until the arrival at the station. The sign then goes off 15 minutes after departure from Hannover, which means it’s free for everyone now. I hope that’s clear 😅

When I got up some times later, there's a group of people around me, who clearly travelling together. I was slightly annoyed, since they're all talking to each other quite loudly. I once encountered a guy sitting in my booked seat, but he was in the middle of a full-on LUNCH (like literally SOUP for some reason) and using the wall cupholder as a mini table since it was the front row. I let him be (he thanked me) and just took the seat next to him. He eventually finished his lunch, and a couple stops later, a woman came up to me saying that I was in her seat. I said sorry and asked the guy next to me to move. Then she got irritated and said, No, YOU'RE in my seat. I was like, Yeah, but this guy's in mine.

@Xuěhuā Often the reservation expires if you don't claim your seat within X minutes. So technically you have no right to it anymore and they can stay there. I think most people are nice enough to move but I wouldn't count on it (there's enough who argue with you even if you try to claim your seat right away after all). However I don't think they will feel stupid, they have no reason to. It's your fault for not saying anything in the first place and in many trains reservations aren't properly labeled so they couldn't have known. I often see reserved seats and nobody turning up so I will also occasionally sit in clearly reserved seats if it's packed and then just get up when someone comes. If they don't say anything it's on them, communication is key 🤷🏻‍♀️

Also, how to behave is up to the person sitting there, whether they say sorry for sitting in a thing that someone paid or if they complain, because maybe they also agree that there is an issue. We also encourage to sit on our booked/assigned seat here in Indonesia. The train might make some stops along the way to pick up more passengers. Also, even if it's a rather empty ride, the train staffs might randomly check your tickets and ask you to move to your own seats if you're not in your assigned seats. It's to ensure if anything might happen, it's easier to track you or your stuffs down according to your tickets' informations.

Of course phrasing it as such isn't the best for publicity, and transit is almost always statistically safer than driving. And there are many reasons that are way less dramatic for staff to try and find you, such as if you dropped your wallet and they are trying to return it.

But lo and behold, it quickly filled up and I had to move like 3 times because now _I_ was sitting in someone else’s seat. The problem here is that if you sit somewhere else, then someone else might come along at a later stop and ask for that seat because THEY booked that seat. And then you could ask the person who is sitting in your seat to change seats, but by then the train might be full and that person won't find a free seat anymore. Making them aware of the problem now, when they can still find another seat, is actually the politest option from a German point of view

    1) In Germany, you can reserve a seat for some additional ticket cost. So you pay extra for it. It is a fixed price, independent of the duration of your travel (about 4 euros one-way). 2) Most trains tell you if a seat is reserved, either a note or led display. 3) Some trains might be empty first, and get crowded once passing a bigger city.

If you miss your train or your plans get cancelled, then it's not possible in Germany to tell the company that you're not coming. This way you can be sure as a customer who hasn't reserved a seat that you can actually stay where you are and you don't have to expect a person suddenly coming up to you and telling you to leave their seat. This policy is just very respectful to other customers, cause they don't need to worry that they'll have to switch places every time the train stops. And if you pay for a seat and don't show up, you cannot expect the company to reserve that seat until you feel like entering the train. But yeah, it has its pros and cons

They got off at the next stop, in which the train completely flooded with passengers but it was standing room only all for hours. Seeing as I was riding the train all the way to Amsterdam, it probably would have been slightly more difficult for me to explain that I had reserved the seat if I was not in my seat originally.

This is pretty common. Also you wouldn't wanna go sit somewhere else and then someone last minute reserves those seats forcing you to move again. And never switch places with another reserved person unless they go to the same destination l cus then there's a whole lot more headache to make them move later and carry all your stuff through the train when their destination is reached and the next reserved person wants their seat from u.

I'm not from German, but I did this too. The other seats may look empty for now, but nobody knows what will happen in the next stops. So it's better to sit on the seats that we paid for, rather than move seats after a few stops

I once sat NEXT to a person who agreed to give up their seat to someone who didn't have a reservation and just sat there. I felt anxiety FOR the person seating next to me. That's next level German.
