So if I'm understanding correctly, the only notes you can get on this instrument are the ones the strings are tuned to, right? Moving your fingers up or down along the strings isn't really going to affect their pitch?

Correct- you play different combinations of notes with both hands from in front and behind, or in the case of strumming, you block the strings you do not wish to hear with your finger tips. By strumming all of the strings and changing your finger positions, you achieve a variety of chords.

Any influence from living continuous lyre traditions like in Ethiopia?

I'm not sure about Ethiopia specifically, but there are certainly influences that would have been for Germanic people when trading in the Mediterranean. Greek, and probably North African, and certainly Middle Eastern lyre playing cultures will have had an impact on the Germanic Lyre as an instrument.

What are you using for strings? I built one of these years ago but havnt played it much need to make new tuning pegs now which has always been the hard part to get right so that it actually stays in tune. Also speaking of what tuning or tunings do you like to use?

The strings here are Fluorocarbon, but I also use Nylgut on my Saxon Lyre.

@@hrafnrikardsson793 thanks a lot for the response I’m gonna try and get my hands on some been using nylon classical guitar strings and not completely satisfied with the sound. My instrument is also maybe a little too thick but it’s maple with an oak top sheet I made it as a science project in 8th grade with my grandpa great memories with this instrument I’m exited to rev it back up. I have some old Norse skaldic meter poems I wrote back in high school I want to put to music. Since moving out of home and becoming an adult I’ve neglected my kind of nerdy interests but I’m in a rediscovery phase.

Today is the last day of shopping before I order my lyre. No one seems to be around on the lyre websites, except you. I am right handed, so is there a difference between how the trossingen lyre should be strung for me? Heavy string to right or left?

Hey Mitch, this is in fact your personal choice. For me, I have them heavy string (6th) closest to me (I'm right handed), but the authentic option, we think, is the opposite away around. Honestly, its however you are comfortable and what you prefer :)

@@hrafnrikardsson793 And that's my dilemma. I have never even held a harp before. I am right handed, but my brain seems to be twisted, cause since I was a little kid, I always batted a ball left and chopped wood left handed. Maybe that helps? I'm 74 now, so it's pretty much set. LOL

@@BirdWhisperer46 Do you play any other stringed instrument? if not, no matter. You can simply try out the different options, see whats best... I know that involves re-stringing, but might be worth the effort. :)

@@hrafnrikardsson793 Never played anything before. But listen to this. Just after Christmas, almost 5 years ago, I had a mild stroke. I was in hospital only 2 weeks and while laying in bed watching TV, the Morse code I had learned as a 10 year old, came back to me. I remembered it all. When I got out of hospital and went home, I studied online for less than 2 days and drove into town to a local radio club, took the test for a Ham license and apparently aced it. I was able to go on radio and talk around the world in code right off the bat. Still can. A number of other things along those lines have happened too, and now it's this incredible urge to play a lyre. So I don't know where or why, but I'm going to follow my nose on this one. LOL :o) My nose says tell the builder to put the heavy string on the right side.

@@BirdWhisperer46 What a story! if you gof or the heavy string on the right, that either suggest you will play it authentically with your right hand, OR you will play it left handed. All you have to do with a lyre is turn it around, so happy experimenting! :)

Why are you sat in a church with pagan jewellery and both Christian/pagan tattoos? Just curious.

The Church is a large, open building that allows my Viking reenactment group to train in combat, as well as living history crafts, and I am afforded space to store all of my kit. Some of my group members happen to be practising Christians, which is actually very useful when portraying Early Medieval Britain and the conflicts that occurred between Christians and the heathen Norse/ Danish settlers. I am Germanic Pagan, that tattoo you see there is incomplete- it is to have flames around it, and Beowulf's dragon spitting fire. I need to find the time to have that done...

@@hrafnrikardsson793 My Grandmother raised me for my first 7 years, She was a Denmark Pagan and didn't care who knew it. LOL And so am I. I am 74 now and what she taught me is kind of dim, but I am leaning the trossingen lyre and I hope she can hear me.
