When I was in high school I took German. I had taken it for a short time and I thought I was somebody pretty special. I was running around in my friend’s house hacking up the German language as best as I could, thinking the whole time my buddy and I were doing just great. His mom was German (she came from Munich). I didn’t realize I was annoying the shit out of her until she grabbed a hold of me and made me stand there rehearsing the pronunciation of ä, ü and ö. I never forgot that! Ich danke ihnen sehr, Frau Schmidt 😢

Wonderful explanations and watching your mouth position is also helpful. I have found Germans cannot say the American short a, and for me, man does not sound like män. This is why it annoys me to hear the words App and Handy spoken in German. For my German husband to learn the short a sound, I ask him to say The cat sat on the mat. He responds, Ze ket set on ze met. Very funny.

ü sound is the easiest sound among ä ë ü for us chinese, because we have the sound in our phonetic system. It is also like french U letter I think. And the ö sound seems like french eu sound. For ä sound , it makes me little confused that somebody speak like æ like English word“bag”, the others speak like ei such as the word “April”. I have no idea which one is the correct to prononciate.

I wish I could get my Rs to roll like hers. I can get the r like in Mutter, or like in Herz, and I have a passable R for words like Bruder/Bruder, but I've been so far unsuccessful in getting it to "trill" like hers does, where one can actually hear a very fast, rhythmic "ratatata" kind of sound. How does one produce this sound?

Some words have a vowel change from singular --> plural, and that may involve an umlaut. Baum, Bäume, Bruder, Brüder. But not always. Some words just have an umlaut because that's how those words are. Für, über, etc.

Im Russischen gibt es auch Ö und Ü (bzw. Ё und Ю), also die sind leicht. Aber darin hat man keine lange oder kurze Vokale, also die sind hart. Ich höre den Unterschied nicht, ich weiß nicht, wo man welche benutzt (ich meine die, die man gleichermaßen schreibt, nicht Stadt und Staat). Das schwerste Teil der Aussprache. :'(
