German Newsweek No. 676- 18 August 1943 [Full HD]

The German Newsweek (Die Deutsche Wochenschau) was the unified newsreel of Germany from 1940-1945. The concept of a weekly newsreel was much older, dating back to WWI, and in the 1930s, there were several different weekly newsreels in Germany. With the outbreak of WWII, these were unified and from June 1940 shown under the title of "The German Newsweek". It was one of the most important aspects of German propaganda.
Each week, over 2000 copies were sent to theaters and movie houses throughout Germany and shown to the general public, as private TV ownership was extremly rare during WWII. Over 700 episodes were produced, and many of the historical WWII footage we nowadays have comes from the Wochenschau.
This is issue No. 676 from August 18th, 1943. It shows the 1943 German National Weightlifting Championship, footage from Navy Hitler Youth, from U-Boat commander Wolfgang Lüth, footage from German police boats on the Dniepr river, wheat harvest in Ukraine, ethnical Germans from Romania joining the Waffen-SS, German soldiers in Greece and on the Eastern Front enjoying their free time, and combat footage from various points of the Eastern Front.

If you like my work and want to support the channel, consider subscribing to my Patreon for more, exclusive content! patreon.com/GermanWWIIArchive Or buy me a Kaffee here: www.buymeacoffee.com/germanwwiiarchive Remarks: This is a re-upload. I have uploaded this video before, but this is a much better-quality version, so I have deleted the original one and re-uploaded this version. 01:59 This footage is from the 35th Annual German Championship in Weightlifting, which was held in Vienna from 31st July to 1st August 1943. Since the 1944 championship was cancelled and there wasn’t one in 1945, this was the last Weightlifting Championship in Nazi Germany, the next one being held in post-war West Germany in 1948. 01:14 I couldn’t find much information about Ernst Hermann, other than that he competed in various weightlifting championships in the late 1930s/early 1940s. You can see on his shirt the logo of the PSV Wien (Police Sport Club Vienna), the sports club of the Vienna Police, founded in 1918. 01:31 Theo Aaldering (1920-1977) was a German heavyweight weightlifter. He won the German Championship in Weightlifting in the heavyweight class in 1942, 1943, 1948, 1949, and again from 1954-1957, and one last time in 1960. Also competed in European Championships in the 1950s. 01:47 Rudolf “Rudi” Ismayr (1908-1998) was a German weightlifter, who won a Gold Medal at the 1932 Los Angeles Olympics, and the Silver Medal at the 1936 Olympics and the 1939 World Championship in Vienna. He set several world records in weightlifting in the early/mid 1930s and was apparently active into the 1950s. 01:59 Hans Claussen (1911-2001) was a German weightlifter, active in the light heavyweight class from the 1930s to 1950s. He came third in the German Championships from 1937-1941, and won in 1942, 1943 and 1948. He also participated in the 1952 Summer Olympics, where he came 11th. 02:20 I couldn’t find much information about Josef Stropek, other than that he came 2nd in the heavyweight category in 1943, and third in 1941 and 42. Like Ernst Hermann, he also wears a shirt of the PSV Wien (see entry above). 02:30 While I couldn’t find much details about it, it seems that the German Canoe Championships were held in 1943 for the last time during the war, although on a much smaller scale than pre-war championships, which was the case for many sport championships held during the war. These would be the last canoe championship before 1947. 02:44 I wasn’t able to find out much about Hans Seiling, other than that he won the 1000m single canoe championship in 1943. 04:02 The Horst Wessel is a barque, build in 1936 and used as a training ship by the German Navy until 1939, when it was de-commissioned. It was then used as a docked training ship for the Navy Hitler Youth. It surrendered to the British in April 1945, and was handed over to the Americans as a war prize. The US Coast Guard commissioned the ship as USCGC Eagle in May 1946, and it still serves as a US Coast Guard training ship to this day. 04:07 Karl Dönitz (1891-1980) was a German Navy officer during both wars, joining the German Navy in 1910. During WWII, he became commander of the U-Boat in October 1939, and chief of the German Navy in January 1943, and Hitlers successor as President of Germany in early May 1945. 04:09 Arthur Axmann (1913-1996) was a German politician and leader of the Hitler Youth from 1940 to 1945. He joined the NSDAP in 1931 and was made Chief of the Social Office of the Reich Youth Leadership in 1933. He was then promoted to Hitler Youth chief in Berlin in 1934. He was made deputy Hitler Youth leader on May 1st, 1940, and leader on 8th August 1940. He fought in WWII and lost his arm during fighting on the Eastern Front in 1941. In 1943, Axmann proposed the idea of a Hitler Youth division, which resulted in the 12th SS Panzer Division “Hitler Youth”. During the Battle of Berlin, Axmann was present in the Führerbunker and was part of the group that left the Bunker on May 1st. He managed to avoid capture and lived under a fake name for a few years. He was arrested in December 1945 in Lübeck by the Americans when he tried to organize a Nazi underground movement. He was sentenced to 3 years and 3 months in Prison. After that, he worked as a businessman and died in October 1996 in Berlin. 04:12 The Navy Hitler Youth was one of the specialized branches of the Hitler Youth (HJ). While membership in the HJ was mandatory for young boys, there were specialized branches of the HJ, the Aviation HJ and the Navy HJ, which prepared young boys for service in the Air Force or Navy. 04:58 Wolfgang Lüth (1913-1945) was a German U-Boat commander during WWII. He joined the German Navy as a cadet in April 1933, and became a U-boat officer in February 1937. In December 1939, he took over U-9, in June 1940 U-138, and in October 1940, U-43, where he sunk 12 ships with 68,000 tons. In April 1942, he became commander of U-181, his most successful U-Boat, where he sunk 22 ships in two patrols in the Indian ocean with 103,712 tons. These patrols took extremely long, his second, for example, 205 days (23th March 1943- 14th October 1943). In total, Lüth sank 43 ships with 215,147 tons. He was one of only two U-Boat Commanders to receive the Knights Cross with Oak Leaves, Swords and Diamonds (on August 9th, 1943). From January 1944, Lüth became a staff officer, and in September 1944 commander of the Navy Warfare School. He died, kind of ironically, in Flensburg on the May 14/15th 1945. He had given orders to the sentries to shoot anyone who would not give the password. Lüth, heavily drunk, tried to enter the grounds of the navy base, and when he failed to give the password, he was shot and killed by one of his own sentries. 05:15 As written above, Lüth only sank 43 ships, not 46, although during wartime, some misreporting of numbers is normal, and I don’t think these numbers were overestimated for Propaganda reasons. 07:27 The threshing machine in the background has “Stahl-Lanz” written on it, the name of a thresher produced by the Heinrich Lanz AG, a German agriculture machinery manufacturer, active from 1859 to 1956. The Stahl-Lanz was the first threshing machine made completely out of steel, introduced in 1929. 07:52 Siebenbürgen is the German name for the region of Transylvania in central Romania. 07:57 Ethnical Germans who were not German citizens, e.g. German diaspora from all over Europe, did usually not serve in the Wehrmacht (as this was only allowed for German citizens) but rather in the Waffen-SS. For example, the 7th SS-Volunteer Mountain Division was mainly formed out of Ethnical Germans living in Serbia. Especially from Southeast Europe, mainly Hungary and Romania, a lot of ethnical Germans served in the Waffen-SS; out of 910,000 Waffen-SS soldiers in 1945, around 310,000 were Ethnical Germans from Southeast Europe. By the end of 1943, around 54,000 Waffen-SS soldiers came from Romania. 08:02 Kronstadt (Brașov) and Hermannstadt (Sibiu) are two cities in Transylvania. 08:05 The sign reads: “We are with you shortly, leave an area free for us” 08:17 Gottlob Berger (1896-1975) was an SS official and chief of the SS Main Office, responsible for SS recruiting, during the war. He was the main head behind opening up the SS to volunteers from all over Europe and to create an army filled with people from different nationalities from all over Europe. He was also responsible for creating the Dirlewanger-Brigade in 1940. He was tried as a war criminal and convicted during the Ministries Trial by the US, sentenced to 25 years in prison, which was later reduced to 10, and he was released in December 1951, spending 6,5 years in custody. He wrote articles for right-wing magazines after the war and died in 1975 in his hometown. 08:56 Especially for German garrison troops stationed in areas without much combat, there was sometimes periods of several years without anything happen, so they had much free time and little to do. 10:08 This is a “Schwimmwagen” (Swim Car), which was an amphibious car built by VW for the Wehrmacht. It had a small propellor, which can be seen here, which could be lowered down when driving through water, with a top speed of 10km/h on water. 15,584 built between 1942 and 1944. 13:04 These guns are 21cm Mortar 18, a heavy howitzer used by the Germans during WWII. Despite its name, it’s not a Mortar, but a howitzer (All German guns over 20cm were named “Mortar”). With shells weighing 63 kilos, it was a devastating weapon. 738 built between 1939-1945. 13:45 The Tiger tank is a German heavy tank of WWII and probably one of, if not the most famous tank of the war. With up to 100mm of armor and with a deadly 8,8cm Gun, it could destroy any allied tank when it came out in late 1942, and its thick armor meaning it was impenetrable for most allied standard tanks. However, by 1944, both the Western Allies and the Soviets came up with tanks and TDs that could penetrate the Tigers armor, and the Tiger was underpowered and had mechanical troubles throughout its existence, plus it was very expensive to make. 1,347 were built between August 1942 and August 1944.

Remarks, Part II: 14:58 This is referring to the Soviet Operation Kutuzov. On July 12th, Soviet troops attacked the German Army Group Center with a massive superiority in men and material (1,2 million Soviet troops with 2,400 tanks and around 2,500 aircrafts against 300,000 German troops with 625 tanks and 610 aircrafts). The Soviets achieved several breakthroughs, with German counterattacks being unsuccessful, and the operation ended with German troops giving up the front bulge at Orel and retreating towards the so called “Hagen”-line east of Bryansk. The Germans lost around 90,000 men (15,000 killed, 61,000 wounded), while the Soviets lost around 430,000 men (113,000 killed, the rest wounded, MIA or captured). Soviet tank losses were particularly high, around 2,500. This battle, shortly after the German Operation Citadel at Kursk, was the first battle of the Eastern Front where the Soviets held the strategic initiative, which they would not give up until the end of the war. 15:03 In reality, the population was often forced to join German retreats, to not let them fall into Soviet hands and to continue working for the Germans. 15:10 During their retreats, the Wehrmacht often employed their “scorched earth” tactis, destroying communication lines, bridges, roads, tunnels, train tracks etc. 16:51 This is a so called “Eierhandgrante 39” (Egg Grenade 39). Despite the Stielhandgranate being more famous, Germany, like the Allies, also used egg-shaped round grenades. The Egg Grenade 39 was manufactured between 1940 and 1945. 16:57 This is a MG-42 heavy machine gun on a tripod. 17:36 The officer on the right is a SS-Sturmbannführer, a rank comparable to Major. 17:54 This is referring to either the failed Donbas strategic offensive from July 1943, or the successful Donbas offensive from August 1943. Both of these offensives were basically the same, they had the goal of re-capturing the Donbas region in Ukraine from the Germans. The first of these offensives, from 17th July to 2nd August 1943 failed, however, the second one from August 13th to September 22nd, 1943, was successful. 17:56 The destroyed tanks in this scene are Soviet T-34 medium tanks. 19:03 The Soviet artillery pieces left and right of the road here are Katyusha rocket launchers, one of the most famous Soviet weapons of WWII. 19:05 The tanks in these scenes are Panzer IV G. The Panzer IV was the most produced tank by the Germans, with 8,553 produced from 1936 to 1945. The tanks shown here are G variants, with 1,927 produced between March 1942 and June 1943. 19:26 This is a Wespe SPG. The Wespe was built on the chassis of the outdated Panzer II, and fitted with a 10,5cm light field howitzer 18. 683 of these vehicles were built from February to June 1944, and an additional 158 ammunition carriers without guns. The vehicle was officially called “leFH 18/2 auf Fahrgestell PzKpfw II (Sf)” or “Sd. Kfz. 124”, the nickname Wespe (Wasp) was forbidden in late February 1944 by direct orders from Hitler, as he thought this nickname was unsuitable for a combat vehicle. The Wespe was first used on a large scale during the Battle of Kursk, and it proved to be a reliable vehicle, and was used until the end of the war. 19:30 The tank on the right here is a Panzer III L. The Panzer III was a German medium tank of WWII, initially as a main combat tank, but from 1944 onwards used as an infantry support tank. This variant is a Ausf. L, with 1470 build in 1941/1942 19:37 This is a StuG III assault gun. 20:21 This is a Nebelwerfer 41, the most common produced German rocket artillery piece of WWII. Armed with six 15cm barrels. 5,283 produced from 1940 to 1945.

In fact, they could lose even more Soldiers and equipment.. They had the oil.. the infrastructure and the manpower.. We lost a lot through stupid " Haltebefehle.." Or Orders, like "Festungsstadt" We should have fallen back much earlier to shorten the front and especially shorten the transportation logistics.. Some guys told that to hitler, abd got sacked... one guy in particular warned hitler before the offensive of stalingrad, and got sentenced to death.. later he got 6 years,.. but was infact killed by himmler, without order from the führer.. Another guy fell back at crimea, to save his people from the oncoming offensive from the east straight.. he was also sentenced to death., Manstein wanted to save him from hitler by intervention.. no chance.

5:01. Wolfgang Luth survived the war, just. His longest patrol was 205 days, in U-181, a long range Type IX D U-Boat, where he patrolled in the Indian Ocean. In 1944 he was appointed the Comander of the German Naval Academy Murwick, in Flensburg. The British occupied Flensburg on 5th of May 1945. While returning drunk, to the Naval Academy, on the 13 of May, Luth was challenged by a German guard, three times. Unfortunately, Luth failed to respond to each challenge, not being able to identify Luth in the dark, the guard fired his rifle, hitting Luth in the head, and killing him instantly. With the permission of the British, Grand Admiral Donitz arranged a State Funeral for Luth, on the 16th of May.

Die Deutsche Wochenschau had a peculiar format almost till the end. First, you will have "lighter" news : sports, culture, education ... Then you will typically have economic news (agriculture, industry, wartime production and gathering ... ) . Finally, it would move to military, but not immediately to the news from the front with highest activity. Instead, it will start in the rear, or in some backwater area without much fighting. Only in last few minutes hardest fighting will be displayed, of course with German success, but some tidbits would slip trough ("we have retreated") . This format is almost completely reverse to modern news presentation, where breaking news go first, and entertainment usually comes last . Nevertheless, it persisted even in 1945 newsweeks .

They looked like Pz III L's with a high velocity 50mm gun. This still gave them a fighting chance against the T34, although there is no question that they were outgunned and also had deficits in armour. Superior gunsights, more and better radios and still a slight edge in terms of crew training. But yes, their vile and stupid ideology was leading to the inevitable and every day the inevitable was delayed meant more deaths at Auschwitz, Treblinka, Sobibor, or as slave labour. The heroes on that side were the ones who deserted or surrendered or served with the Committee for Free Germany.

But still better to have a useless tank than no tank at all l guess

So what is "your work"?? You are using film digitalisations which you didn't produce and for which you don't hold the copyright. The rights are held by Transit Film GmbH in Germany (which has been informed). It's a joke you claim this to be "work" and attempt to make money with it.

Most of these newsreels are in public domain. I have never claimed that I hold the copyright to them, you just made that up. My work input is several hours worth of transcribing and translating. I'm sure you are aware that translating is in fact work, and not a "joke". There are people who make a living doing translations, so I am not sure why you would claim this to be a "joke". In addition, I write very extensive remarks. Next, I don't expect anyone to pay for these. You can support me on Patreon and Buy me a coffee, but you don't have to. I am not sure what you think, but I make very little money with my channel.I am a full-time student and still work two part-time jobs. If you assume I get rich by doing KZread, you are mistaken. Last, if you think I am doing something illegal here, feel free to report me to any authority you want. You already said you did that, so we shall wait what happens. Have a nice day. PS: I don't get why you are so angry and upset about this. You could have simply came to my Discord or wrote me an Email and we could have talked about this in a civilized manner, instead you wrote this angry and insulting comment. There was no need for that.
