German Music: From "Schlager" To "Deutschrap" Via Rock And Techno | Meet The Germans

Ойын-сауық

Do you know much about German music? Tune in to this episode of Meet the Germans to see Rachel sample different genres of mainstream music in Germany, from rock to hip-hop, techno to "Schlager."
Rammstein, Helene Fischer and Capital Bra have probably never been on the same playlist before... but Meet the Germans is bringing them together for a musical one-off.
Rachel moved from the UK to Germany in 2016. As a relative newcomer she casts a fresh eye over German clichés and shares her experiences of settling into German life. Every two weeks she explores a new topic - from unusual bans to meaty cuisine or haunted castles. This week: the ultimate German music playlist.

Actually, Germany has a huge medieval / medieval rock scene which is small per capita, but characteristic for Germany. Influences are largely from rock/metal, but also goth or ancient music styles. Genre examples are f.e. Saltatio Mortis, In Extremo, or Feuerschwanz.

I think Udo Jürgens is worth a mention as two of the best cartoon intros and outros are composed by him (Vielen Dank für die Blumen). An other man I have listen quiet a lot recently: Alligatoah, his songs include: Willst du mit mir Drogen nehmen? (Do you want to take drugs with me?) Wo kann man das kaufen? (Where can you buy that?) Vor Gericht! (In front of the court!) Lass liegen! (Leave it!) Du bist schön! (You are beautiful) Denk an die Kinder! (Think about the children!) I agree with you on Alligatoah. He is definitely a great musician. Udo Jürgens is definitely a bit more difficult. On one hand he would definitely fit into a Schlager Playlist or the classics list in the end. On the other hand you could argue that he doesn’t really belong into the video because he is Austrian and shaped the Austrian music scene probably even more than the German one. So it’s debatable if he fulfills the criteria.

The "german" singers singing in english: Alphaville, Fools Garden, Rea Garvey, Michael Patrick Kelly, Nico Santos... Of course as "Cologner" that you are: BAP (Wolfgang Niedecken), Bläck Föös, Höhner, Brings The new german (Mainstrean/Charts/Radio) DJs: Robin Schulz, Felix Jaehn, Paul & Fritz Kalkbrenner, Alle Farben German "Country" singers: Truck Stop, Texas Lightning, Tom Astor And last but not least... the whole "Ballermann-Songs"-Scene: Mickie Krause, Peter Wackel, Tim Toupet, Almklausi

Die Ärtze are now around for about 39 years. within thier music they comibe generations of old and young germans. my first concert ever as a young teenager was them performing in Braunschweig. waiting in line to see them there where people even younger folks than me, around 12 years and guys way older than me. I thought "okay whats that 55 year old dude here?" starting out as a punk band, becoming entertainment gods (even featured in the tagesschau), forming awareness for crtitical thinking, self development as teenagers. thier songs are funny, catchy and a lot of them have a high rate of sarcasm/ darker humor and have a message.

As an Indian who learns German language, i have started with the Pop+Jazz music "Luxuslärm" (is not mentioned in this Video) & rock band "Rammstein". After acquiring intermediate fluency, then started hearing "Silbermond", "Nockalm Quintett", "Die Toten Hosen", "Eisbrecher" :)) Sometimes i feel, German Songs has much more to say than the English Songs of the Famous Artistes even.🙂

A really nice overview, and I appreciate that you didn't simply sh... all over Schlager like most people do for various reasons. But I feel you missed some important figures of German music, above all Reinhard May, who is basically a German Chansonist. You also covered Raggae and Rap aso but somehow missed out on mentioning the whole Wave and Gothic scene (and the WGT - and Unheilig), the whole German Techno Movement, the different kind of experimental music (see Blue Man Group and Co), you mentioned none of the actual classics from Bach up to Schubert, and (though I guess this is somewhat understandable) you completely overlooked the importance of German music for children, especially Rolf Zuchowski.

Liedermacher were pretty popular from the 60s to the late 90s and most Germans (even those born after the era) know at least one song. Here's some of what you missed: Singer/songwriters like Reinhard Mey and others, especially lyrically dense songs like 'Narrenschiff" and "Das Meer", and verbal imagery like 'Gute Nacht, Freunde" and "Manchmal da fallen mir Bilder ein". Singers who go way back, like Marlene Dietrich and Zarah Leander, or guys that tug on the heartstrings, like Freddy and Heino. If you dare, try on some songs in Austro/Bavarian dialect, like Ambros, Danzer, or Kapfinger. Of course, once the party gets going and everybody is good and liquored, it's time for "Grieeeechischer Weiiiiin, ist so wie das BLUUUT der Erde .....".

But it would be a terrible mistake to ignore Bach, Beethoven, Haydn, Schubert, Brahms, Mendelssohn, Schumann, and even Handel, Mozart, Strauss... I mean, if you really need to cover German music in your videos, you need to start working on a documentary, because their musical contribution is immense, far beyond rock'n roll. Oh I must also add Ritchie Blackmore to the world's greatest German rockers of all time 🤣
