The German medieval-style Rock and Metal bands are actually an (indirect) offspring of early to mid-1970s folk rock, which in turn had developed from a 1960s folk ballads genre. It's quite an interesting field of musical history you've come across there.

An initial is a large decorative letter at the beginning of a text, that was used as a decorative ornament in historical texts. So I guess, the big I in the band name is kind of a reference to that.

thanks for your reaction to In Extremo! I saw them three times live here in Germany, everytime very good. Fun fact: They build their intruments by themselves! Next for you: Liam, Frei zu sein, Loreley, Erdbeermund or nur ihr allein and ..... Other German medival bands, you have to listen: Subway to Sally, Feuerschwanz, Saltatio Mortis, Schandmaul, Tanzwut, Corvus Corax or Krayenzeit...

This song was the first song that was brought into a computer game in the year 2001 They programmed a stage on a medieval marketplace in the game Gothic and there the band made a gig.

@thomasstroh-uu2mj the song Herr Mannelig is much older. Its an original old swedish folkssong written during 1877 in Södermansland. Sence that several bands used the Song. And yes In Extremo used the song during a Gig in the game Gothic.

In Extremo... verry good!!! BTW: 2:15 It's similar to a chinese/asian Suona! The playing style is the same. It's called a "Schalmei".

That voice is really unique. If u want to hear more of it, look out for the new Band "Universum25", he's lead singer there.

In Extremo are an amazing band. I saw them live at Wacken Open Air 2022 in Germany 🤘 They belong to a range of some very good German medieval folk/rock/metal bands. Unfortunately these bands from Germany and Europe are not that recognized worldwide, yet. But if you want to dive deeper into this genre or rabbithole of music, In Extremo is like the first entry ticket to another world of music.

Germany has a very strong medieval scene: In Extremo, Saltatio Mortis, Subway To Sally, Versengold, Feuerschwanz, Corvus Corax and many many more.

Schandmaul and Subway to Sally are also one of the most popular german medieval music bands. You should check them out

Hi there - "In Extremo" is a a very-very-nice band who play cool the old instruments and take us back the times. But take a look at the best ever band that made this old music popular - it was ----> "Corvus Corax" the most popular and of course the best and much famous live bands ever that made the middle age music popular ! In Extremo are great! II'll see them live this winter and I'm already looking forward to it! Fun fact: They have a cameo in the German videogame "Gothic". They perform "Herr Mannelig" on stage in-game. :D My absolute favorite song from them, however, is "Liam" (the Gaelic version, especially) but I also like "Pikse Palve" very, very much!

In Extremo and Subway to Sally are the greatest bands of this genre medivial rock and there are a lot of other bands like Saltatio Mortis. The band Corvus Corax are only playing with histrorical instruments without the hard rock parts. If they do so, they are performing under the name Tanzwut

Oh, if you like this, you would LOVE the sound from german medivial rock band "Feuerschwanz"!! Try "momento morí" or "knochenkarussell" or "metfest", you won´t regret :)

Great choice, I love the band! If you like the combination of old style instruments and metal, you should also listen to their song "Spielmannsfluch", another story from medieval times, but this time told in German.

If you want to listen to another story song, maybe take a look in "Villeman Og Magnhild" (also by In Extremo) or you want to take a look in Equilibrium, they are a pagan-metal band! And a completly wild suggestion, maybe you want to listen to Knorkator! xD there is also a cover by them from "Ma Baker" xD

If you want to hear Old High German, the band has performed the two Merseburg charms. Of course there is no guarantee that the reconstruction of linguists or the way performers sing it is correct.

@@Sayu277 Yes, there are extant texts, but pronunciation isn't always clear. Old High German (generic term for early medieval language varieties, with High German Consonant Shift, AD ca. 750 - 1050, handed down in writing) differs considerably from modern Standard German inclusive pronunciation. I don't know if the performers did it right.

@@waltergro9102 I know what old high german is I did minor in German linguistics. I may have misunderstood OP to say that the old high german in Merseburger Zaubersprüche ll was just a reconstructed language (like proto germanic etc). So I was like no those lyrics are from actual old Texts..

@@Sayu277 I suspected that. As a layman I used carelessly "reconstruction". I just meant the pronunciation. I like the Carmina Burana from Carl Orff which includes Middle High German text. I once found an online audio from an expert on Middle High German about how to pronounce the respective texts in Carmina Burana correctly. Not surprisingly none of the choirs got it right. Inclusive German choirs. Supposed the expert was right.

Yes, the shawm - Schalmei comes to europe in the middle ages from asia, turkey, iran.

In fact In Extremo are the originators of medieval rock/metal. Once they were 2 bands (one medieval and the other one metal) that joined to create that unique sound for good. So glad you like their sound. If you want to go down that rabbit hole, give "Liam (live!)" a chance! Stay save Lady and Gent, from Germany ✌️

The I is written like a J because in modern german cursive, the two look very similar. The J just has an underlength ligature.

I saw In Extremo live many years ago when they still played at small festivals (and I was young). They're great! Had seen "medieval" bands before and found them boring, but I love metal, so that's the right stuff for me. The song here actually is Swedish, Germany doesn't have trolls, but there are troll-like figures and many mysterious and scary creatures in many local traditional stories. German folklore and fairy tales is much more than just the Brothers Grimm.

You should really give Feuerschwanz a try. You will like it i bet.

Ive never heard this version before and this was awsome. 🔥🔥🔥 Troll in scandinavia is often described as a magical creature often looking just like a human. Like some other people already have suggested, try something from the group "Heilung" . Heilung is a Nordic ritual folk band with members from Denmark, Germany and Norway. For example: Heilung | LIFA - Krigsgaldr LIVE

If you liked the combination of old and newer instruments, take a look at "Haggard" (perhaps "awaking the centuries"). The band consists of 20 people, with violins, Cellos, etc, there is a whole classical orchestra part of the band....^^

Germany has a many bands in the medieval area: Corvus Corax (a bit more in the bard or bandsmann style) Subway to Sally (combing Folk, Rock and Medieval) Qntal (combining Electro with Medieval) Estampie (same female singer as Qntal but without Electro) Saltatio Mortis (a bit like Subway to Sally: Folk, Rock and Medieval) Schandmaul (Folk and Medieval) etc.

Maybe it was the movie shrek that you recognize?

If you think that Faeries and Trolls are mythology ask the ppl from Iceland. For them they´re very real. Not to offend s-one, you know what I mean. 😉 But again a nice reaction so far. This flute reminds me of the Kazoo. You can make similar sounds with it. But I didn´t like this songs where they used to sing in a fantasy language.
