Corn dogs are the best at a county or state fair. Mustard is a MUST! Also, Sonic tends to make things sweeter than what you get up here in Ohio. Favorite fast food burger is 5 Guys, but if you're on a budget, then Wendy's. Deana, make Phil some Ore Ida tater tots.

Why didn't you hit the button and tell them they forgot the sauces lol? Here Sonic has carhops will go car to car with condiments. If someone at any restaurant or fast food place forgets something always ask. If they mess your order up sometimes you can get free food not always though. Hope y'all had gun on your trip. Oh the best place ever fir a corn dog is the Texas State Fair no joke.

Phil & Deana , IF you want a really Great Corn Dog , go to a Carnival or Fair and get one! The State Fairs always has Great Corn Dogs !

I'm 62 years old and live in Pennsylvania and not one restaurant has ever asked for a tip before we ate or meal or even after.

6/10 is about the best you can expect from fast food. That second corn dog looks incredible. I’d rather eat there than fast food drive-thrus.

I love corndogs. Sonic has great chili dogs. Tipping has gotten out of hand, I’ve stopped tipping altogether now if my meal isn’t dine in. If there wasn’t a server refilling my drinks, I dont tip.

I plan ahead before I get fast food and bring cash. The screen is ignored.

Man, i worked fast food before i went to University and back then, the job sucked and the pay was worse, but we still made sure people’s orders were correct and apologized if we messed up. Nowadays, the customer service is so bad i refuse to eat at any of these places. And tip before service? They can eat my corndog…

Also Deana I feel for you. I too can’t get the excitement of going to Sonic. Last time I went the locked up the restroom because of homeless issue and were skimpy on sauce packets. You probably could’ve ask for them but yea the service person didn’t sound thrill to serve you

There is nothing better than a corndog with mustard. The single greatest fair food money can buy.

yo love your vids. i live in canada (almost all of us live near the border btw) and we don't get asked for tips up front at fast food places. tips are expected at sit down restaraunts and for some services like a haircut or movers.

in Schleswig-Holstein french toast is a normal thing but we call it Armer Ritter. you can make it sweet like the one you eat in the video or with blackbread and chives or onions

I was just going to mention that. There is French toast in Germany and it isn't just a regional specialty...you find it everywhere in the country.

This was fun! Used to take my daughter to Weinerschnitzel in California for a corn dog after Sunday school.

There are pros and cons to tipping culture. I was a server in college and on a good night my tips made my wage equal $35/hr but on slow nights it was like $8/hr in 2006 so 🤷‍♀️. Also u gotta slather that corn dog in mustard 😂

You love corn dogs? You would love their Korean counterpart! EDIT: Oh, that Mr. Cow thing is very Korean-like.

From what I read online it’s an Asian owned business and they buy at least some of their ingredients from South Korean suppliers. I’m any event Korean hot dogs are amazing ^_^

I tried a Korean corn dog once and didn't like the sugar on it. It made the whole thing taste weird.

If you haven’t already, visit the State Fair of Texas in September-October and get a Fletchers corny dog. People line up for these, and its a REAL corny dog!

They serve fried butter there. Fried butter. If you can do that, you can do anything! (They take a little pastry shell, load it up with a buttery sauce, and somehow fry it before it all leaks out.)

Also try Korean corn dog. It has cheese and meat inside. On the outside they sprinkle things in top. What make it unique is the dipping sauce

I'm very excited that you are back in the United States. You'll have to take Phil to Myrtle Beach South Carolina to some of the wonderful seafood buffets. Also you should take Phil to South Florida, and the keys and Key West, and try to go to Disney World, Epcot, Animal Kingdom.

The Sonic headquarters in Oklahoma City in the Bricktown District (which is a district within downtown OKC) has a restaurant on the ground floor and it’s the only Sonic that’s not a drive-in or drive-thru. It is themed like a 1950s/1960s diner with booths and tables and you order from a counter just like you would at any other fast food. To be fair, Bricktown is an entertainment and dining district so people aren’t usually going there for fast food (although there’s also a McDonald’s in Bricktown, too), but it is there for folks in the district who want to go to it. So if you’re ever in OKC you should stop in there just to see the Sonic that’s a sit down restaurant. The food is the same. Most folks where I live mostly go to Sonic to get custom drinks like a cherry vanilla Dr Pepper, raspberry Sprite with Nerds in it, etc during happy hour. Or to get root beer floats or coke floats, etc (because our A&W restaurant closed so it and Braum’s are the only restaurants left that still serve ice cream floats). My town has 3 McDonald’s and 4 Sonic’s (one at each cardinal point of entry of the town along the two major US highways that intersect my city) [my city has 51,000 people and has 8 Dollar Generals now….I grew up here in the 1980s and 1990s with a population of 45,000 and we had two, moved away and then moved back in 2004 and we had 4 with a population of 49,000 and now in 2023 there’s 8! They’re like everywhere now it’s weird!]. At least they remembered a straw for your drink! But sucks that they forgot your condiments. Phil is right, a lot of that food is better with sauces. At least the Blast didn’t disappoint (Phil said it’s hard to mess up, but as a former Crew Trainer for a McDonald’s I can attest that I’ve worked with folks who accomplished that difficult task…worked at a Braum’s and at a local steakhouse with some ice cream desserts and also worked with a few folks who surprisingly messed up ice cream….still not sure how they did it!). Great video!

Fun video. When ordering at Sonic, you can press the red button and request mustard and ketchup or anything else. You need to dip the corn dog in mustard and the tater tots in ketchup. It is customary to tip at Sonic if they bring the food to your car. The tip is for the server - not the cook. Some Sonics have a drive through and it is not customary to tip, at the drive through window.

Sonic has always been a tipping place. They bring your food out, similar to a sit down restaurant. They used to clean up after you finished. They used to serve the food on a tray that hung from your window, then you would place all the trash on the tray and leave it on a shelf under the order pane. If you ever are in Texas or Oklahoma, even in the southeastern states, you should try something that was started here by German immigrants, called a chicken fried steak. It comes with a white gravy and is amazing when done right. It might remind you of schnitzel, except made from full grown cows instead of veal, pork or lamb.

Deana, although I rarely pull into a drive-in, I still can't remember when they asked for a tip. I mean, for cryin' out loud, they're not coming to your table to check on you, none of that. Yet, they still want a tip, even though you've not received your food yet? In case you're interested in how the coney dog got its name, in Brooklyn, NY, there's an amusement area which, during the period between the 1880s and WW2, was the largest amusement park in the world, and its name was (and still is) Coney Island, which is where this dog originated.

At Sonic... you tip $1 or your remaining change for the server bringing the food out. Before they even had that option on the digital menu, we always gave the server our leftover change or a dollar.😁PS.. i adore Sonic corndogs and their fountain drinks with the pebble ice!

Agreed, I used to work for Sonic when I was a teenager back in the 80's. Remember when their hamburgers were actually made to order? We never expected a tip, it was always a nice surprise when I got one.

If you're sitting at the drive in just tell them if your order is wrong. They've always fixed it, with tip or no. Extremely friendly. I usually don't tip at Sonic but if I do, it's in cash.

If you tip in advance with your card, the server will be taxed on the tip as part of their regular check. If you slip them a dollar or two when they bring your order, they get the money now without taxes.

As an American that has lived and worked in Germany for the last 40 years I would find it hard to give a tip before I got my food. I did not know that you gave tips at a fast food place. If you have to ask for a tip you are not doing your job very well.

We think it's a new addition? It wasn't this apparent when we were in the US last year. Most of the restaurants we've been to this time ask for a tip on the screen, and that is BEFORE we get the food.

I never tried Sonic but I loved corn dogs, used to get the frozen ones put them in the microwave and then with ketchup or mustard, the things I miss about the USA

I used to go to Sonic all the time years ago. In my opinion the best thing there is the foot-long chili dog and the banana split. You got to remember you're getting older and you're not going to like the same things as you did when you were a kid, our taste changes as we grow older. Also you could have pushed the button and asked for them to bring you out sauces. You were missing marinara for your mozzarella sticks, you were missing marinara for your jalapeno poppers, you were missing ketchup, mustard, ranch, ect. Just push the button and ask for your condiments. It's simple. Problem solved!

Hi guys. I took my husband to Sonic for the first time. I totally understand about the tip. You usually tip after your service.. 10 percent 20 percent etc. A drive thru I don't tip. Like Wendy's, Arby's, mc Donald's. Sonic maybe 10 percent or a few bucks. It's hard because like you said you don't want your food to come out bad. I say go with what you feel. We're in Pgh, pa. Everywhere we go your asked for a tip. I think it depends on where you're at and your service. A sit down restaurant 20 percent. N a Sonic 10 percent. Depending on your order. Starbucks 10 percent. Etc. 🫶🫶😋🤤🥨🌭🌯 French toast was always my favorite as a kid. I make it for dinner. We'll have eggs too. Definitely syrup. Cut up bananas. Yum 💙🩷

At the 1942 Texas State Fair, Mr Fletcher ran out of hot dog buns at his hot dog stand, but he had some corn meal ..... that's the origin of corn dogs. Needs mustard. You could call the Carhop and she would bring condiments.

The key to avoiding tipping at Sonic is to just go through the drive thru lane. Some Sonics don’t have them, but I believe most do.

We were actually talking about this the other day regarding the Uber drivers getting tipped and vice versa! If they know they aren’t getting a tip the will usually and deliberately slack on their service which really infuriates me

What you’re saying is not true to my experience or that of anyone I’ve talked to about it. Uber driver will typically only accept your ride if you’ve tipped enough to make it worth it. If you’re a bad tipper then you’ll get the bottom of the barrel as far as drivers go.

Yes, county and state fairs for some of this type food. Minnesota state fair claims 150 things "on a stick", and they would never name it a "corn dog". Some areas in the country don't even have such fairs.

On the coney always get the foot long. And make sure you get the all beef dog. If you don't tell them they give you the basic meat frank. Plus just order extra chili and cheese. No relish, and just mustard and onions. 🌭🌭Also ask for marinara sauce for the cheese sticks. I would've pushed the button and told them where's the cheese sauce? For the 🥨 pretzel.😋👍And ask for cheese on the tots. And get an ocean water to drink.

2:28 I'm with you. Tipping is for restaurant service (good service and good food) or delivery service. Not when you have to queue up and pick up your own food. I refuse to be guilted into tipping, especially before I eat.

The bread being a bit sweet isn't a Sonic thing, it's an american thing. Felt like I was eating pastry when I went to my first Wendy's.

Love corndogs. I have a sweet tooth so I don't mind them being sweet. I prefer to dip min into yellow mustard. I also absolutely love French toast sticks. Definitely have to have syrup.

I think you now have your next food challenge for Phil: a French Toast challenge. It's not an everyday breakfast option, but it's something that I feel is a traditional American breakfast that one would make on weekends or holidays. Of course it's also something you can get at a Denneys or any other all night diner at 3am after a night of drinking. French toast sticks at a fast food place doesn't do French toast justice, especially without syrup. In addition to traditional with powdered sugar and maple syrup, you can do so many variations with fruit toppings and whipped cream. And if you're really adventurous, maybe a Monte Cristo sandwich.

Service and quality can vary wildly from one Sonic to another. In my town there are a dozen Sonics, all under the same franchisee, and they are phenomenal. Thirty miles away in another town, the Sonic is abysmal. They shouldn't be that inconsistent, but they are. Incidentally, I always tip carhops the most. They bring your food no matter how bad the weather, and you never have to get out of your car. Skip the tip up front and give cash to your carhop.

New Zealand hotdogs is a sausage on a stick with the same batter used for fish and chips, always comes with tomato sauce ( like ketchup but less vinegar.

Mr. Cow seems to be servng Korean hot dogs, which are all the rage right now. The main difference between corn dogs and Korean corn dogs lies in the batter. American corn dogs are battered in a cornmeal batter, and Korean corn dogs are battered in a yeasted dough or a rice flour batter. Korean corn dogs are also finished with a topping of some sort, like sugar, cheese, or powdered something or other. Some Korean hot dogs also don't contain hot dogs - using mozzarella cheese or fish or rice cakes instead.

I don't usually comment because I stream most videos on my TV, but I watched this this morning, and knowing I had homemade chili..... We had chili cheese hot dogs that were AMAZING. Thanks for the idea!

i always loved the hand dipped corndog's we would get at the fair or at the boardwalk. The old time corndogs would have a much less sweet cornbread batter or cornmeal pancake batter that was made fresh a couple times a day and dipped right before it was fried. This would result in a thiner fluffy layer of bread. Most modern corndogs you get are prepared ahead of time and frozen and are quite a bit different. HA that mr cow dog monstrosity was amazing. flaming hot Cheeto's!

I pay cash; they don't usually ask for a tip if you pay cash. With a card, the tip request is built in. And I love to get habaneros on the coney dog. YUM!

French toast in Germany is called Arme Ritter. We used to eat it with cinamon sugar.

I like to mix ketchup and mustard together, about 50/50 mix, and then dip my corn dog in it - yummy! I buy apple-strudel bread from Aldi to make some awesome French toast- try it! Hardly needs syrup it’s so tasty.

Blast isn’t a milkshake they have those too. A blast is just vanilla ice cream with mix ins

@@jeffhampton2767 I had my shoulder replaced twice in 2 days. The Same shoulder and I was scared too. They wheeled me in ,and that’s all I remember till I awoke in recovery room. I know the HIP is much bigger but medical issues with medication scares me more than anything. Easy Peasy. The prep B4 one leaves for the Hospital is the hardest. Best of luck on your HIP. I can barely walk now and it feels like I have a rock in my right rear pocket 24/7.

Mr. Cow is actually a Korean corn dog restaurant. Those corn dogs are very popular in South Korea and have become popular in the US due to mukbangs on KZread.

I have to have mustard & ketchup to dip it in each bite I dip in mustard & ketchup or u can just squirt both on the corndog & sometimes I dab it into a little salt. Sonic also has a cheese sauce that's usually for their pretzel twist but good with the corndogs

At Sonic the people that deliver the food make the same amount that a restaurant server make. So they only make a few dollars an hour they depend on the tips to make enough money to live life. Don't tip before on the kiosk just tip when they bring your foot. Jealous that you get to eat good German food.if your ever back in Tampa go to Mr. Dunderbak's great German and European sausage's good warm potato salad and a couple hundred beers. The tipping ahead of time request started right after the pandemic when people were forced to do a lot of takeout. It's also like a "service/covid fee".

Here is my tip. Next trip to Sonic, order at the drive thru then pay and pick up at the window and you can skip the tip dilemma. Then swing around and park in one of the stalls.

I agree the tipping is out of control. If I go to a non fast food restaurant, I tip because I know the servers are depending on tips. At fast food places, I don’t because they are making a regular wage... and fast food is hiring at $10-$15 an hour where I’m at. Love seeing where you take Phil when y’all are in SC🥰! I do not tip at fast food. But also, the drive through worker sounded rude when you tried to order and even IF you tipped- they didn’t earn one.

I grew up dipping corn dogs into a ketchup/mustard mix. If I have them now, it’s usually plain- no condiments.

Hey Deana, I had my first Tater tots a few years ago in US Bank Stadium, Minneapolis. Since that day I've missed something like that in Germany and I have to say I found something. It is called "Snack Rösti". You can't find them everywhere, but we have them in our local "Kaufland". Maybe you will find them anywhere in your area too?

I like Sonic's corn dogs with a little mustard. Really needs the mustard. Balances it. Plus corn dogs are made with corn bread batter which is sweeter than regular batter. The ones from Mr cow are Korean dogs.

You have to add the condiments to the corndog yourself. Mostly kids like corndogs from Sonic, so they are not going to put the condiments on it before hand so people decide what they want. PS the blast is not a milkshake it’s more like a flurry from Dairy Queen.

Of all the things that have travelled from the USA to Germany, I would have assumed that corn dogs would have been one of them. Can you imagine a Currywurst version of a corn dog? Some chopped onions in the batter and the curry sauce as a dip.That would be fantastic.

In the USA you get asked for tips and donations everywhere. Part of the country says that we need to get away from it and pay employees a living wage. Then others say “if you don’t like it, go find another job or even leave the country”. So many people are insane. They don’t see it as an improvement if everyone can afford to live on a single wage. For them it’s normal that you might need three jobs just to survive. Those people talk about it, like it has always been that way but in the 60’s a family could afford to live of one salary from a single 9 to 5 job, even if they had multiple kids. With many jobs that’s impossible now. I’ve never been to Sonic. Thanks for showing me this, so I know I didn’t miss out on anything and don’t ever need to go either. Somehow, every fast food chain I get recommended - like the In & Out Burger - it disappoints so much… The USA is well known for its fast food but somehow I highly prefer fast food from the Netherlands!

I used to work at Sonic and your carhop was slacking lol. Literally every item you ordered needed to come with a specific condiment ie: ranch, cheese sauce, marinara sauce, ketchup and mustard haha. Yeah they might’ve just been having a bad day. Oh and we sold a lot of burgers too. It wasn’t just hot dogs and corn dogs 😂

If you like the Sonic Blast, you need to try the original blended soft serve dessert--The DQ (Dairy Queen) Blizzard. The Mud Pie is my personal favorite, and I always request they add some mint. Amazing.

That second one is a Korean corn dog. The cheddar peppers are called jalapeno poppers here in the west coast. Is that what they are called around the rest of the US?

Jalepeno poppers always have cream cheese inside right? You can get them frozen in Germany but they always explode in the oven before fully cooked so they're no fun to eat.

@@LythaWausW they can come with any cheese. I suspect that cream cheese is just easier to work with in the factories where they are bagged commercially? Just a guess. If you haven't had the ones with other cheeses, you should try them. Nom

American Southern Food has an influence of English, German and French. Florida is a mix of Cuban, Spanish, French and Soul Food. Other areas of North America has influences of those Countries as well as from even more Countries.

You need to try Wisconsin fried cheese curds. Not in New York or LA, in Wisconsin. They're kinda like mozzarella sticks, but waaaay better. BTW I watched many of your videos before our trip to Germany last November, thanks for all the great tips!!

Tipping I agree has gotten out of hand, during Covid a lot of people were tipping everyone including fast food, they all put tip jars on the counter by the cash register and now they expect it.

Drinks are the best things at Sonic. My fav is a blue coconut creme slush

You don't pay tip in advance if you pay cash. Also, if you check the bag before you leave you can have them give you what you're missing. Lastly, Sonic has really focused on their burgers lately and have introduced some specialty burgers that are awesome. I don't love Sonic hot dogs, but i do like corn dogs. Also, you can't really fault the restaurant when you order a huge bag of food then drive to a different location and let food cool off before you eat it. Lastly if you're going to pit one corn dog against another price needs to be considered Tater tots are always better if they're cooked more... crispier is better

You need to add yellow mustard on your corn dog to cut through the sweetness of the cornbread.

Here’s the thing about fast food in the US… it’s generally sub par versions of great foods. No one is going to Sonic thinking you’re getting the best versions of that food. But the foods themselves: chili dogs, corn dogs, jalapeño poppers, etc. That shit is amazing when done homemade or from a proper restaurant. American food is really amazing and creative but too often it is made cheaply by massive restaurants who don’t do it Justice. But I would put much actual American regional cuisine up against almost anything.
