German fan experiences amazing atmosphere at Atlanta United vs. New England Revolution

Pre match:
Atlanta United are currently 8th in the MLS with 23 points and today’s opponent, New England Revolution are on 6th position with 25 points, so this should be a pretty good game.
United were founded in 2017, which is why their supporters are called the 17s. Now, I never thought that I would ever wear a shirt of a club that is merely 6 years old, because many of our clubs in Europe go back way over 100 years and tradition is something that European football supporters hold in very high regard.
But hey, tradition has to start somewhere, right? So why not in 2017?
What I’m personally looking forward to see is, first of all, the quality of football and, secondly, the quality of support in the United States.
And the third thing I’m really curious about is, since the game is pretty young here in America, if there are already proper established rivalries and also whether or violence is as common a thing in the MLS as it is over in Europe!
--------------------------------------------------------
Post match:
I really loved how the United Supporters have incorporated Atlanta musicians into their chants, like ‘Move Bitch Get Out the Way” by Ludacris.
Also, United really means United here in Atlanta.
---------------------------
#wearethea #atlantaunited #mlssoccer
The reason I missed the first two goals that United conceded is simply because Revolutions away support basically didn’t exist - probably due to the fact that the game was played on a Wednesday evening and Boston is about 1100 miles away…
Thanks to @gtoes88 for your statement - United really means United here in Atlanta!

Thank you for being an ambassador for MLS and football in the US. I have been a devoted fan of the world game for over 40 years. I never thought I would see the sport I love gain the traction in my country which it has done. Incidentally, it is good to see Giorgos Giakoumakis doing well and looking happy in Atlanta. I'm a devoted Celtic fan, and was disappointed when we sold him (I still think that was a mistake). But, if he had to go, I'm glad he came to the US. Out of curiosity, who's your club back home? Just nosy. Gruß aus Nebraska, USA!

@@Addict10nFootball Yes. He shared duties as our #9 with Kyogo Furahashi. I don't think he was terribly unhappy with the club or the supporter base, but I do think he wanted a situation in which he was the clear cut first option up top. And I'm almost positive he's earning more money in Atlanta than he did in Scotland. He had been the golden boot winner in Holland (on a team which got related) before coming to Celtic. During the 21/22 season, he was the league's second leading goal scorer, despite being a half-time player. Bottom line, he's a very, very good striker.

A neat quirk of MLS is that the league and the teams are SO young, it's hard for really passionate Euro style hate to have emerged yet. If you want that, you need College Football. 100 year old rivalries steeped in history. When Alabama comes into Auburn or Ohio State visits Michigan, there's hate in the air itself.

I’m very glad you had a mostly good experience. Atlanta is a city built on southern hospitality. Just wait until 2026 - it’s going to be amazing having the world here in the A. Too bad you came to a midweek game … you have to come to a tailgate - a uniquely American tradition that the Atlanta United supporters groups have taken to the next level. (We can thank our American football fans for inspiring tailgating as an art form). Food, music, beverages, games, and so on. It would definitely elevate your match day experience. As a side note, I never park downtown. I take transit. $5 round trip and free parking at my local station. Not necessarily an option for everyone tho.

One of the reasons you don't see alot of fan tension in most American sporting events is because of the great distances between competing teams. For instance New England is 1077 miles from Atlanta. That's almost as far as from Munich Germany to London England. You aren't going to have alot of New England fans travel that far for a just a regular season game. So stadiums tend to be packed out mostly with just the teams fans and not many rival fans most matches.

  • @gacaptain

    @gacaptain

@@Addict10nFootball Sure but imagine traveling those types of distances over and over again for every regular season away match. I don’t think most die hard European fans are going to be able to do that even if they wanted. Lol Last week we played Montreal ;1969 miles (London to Athens). This week we’re up in New England. 1100 miles. I think a lot of European coaches and players take awhile to get used to just how much traveling they have to prepare for here. Loved your video.

@@Addict10nFootball important to keep in mind it is very relative to region. Here in the north eastern USA, specifically the BOS-WASH corridor, we have multiple HUGE sports markets all within a very close geographic area, much like a lot of Europe. So going to away games is not only possible but way more common and something that one sees pretty often. We also have a far more robust public transportation ecosystem than most regions of the US, and our stadiums are located within proximity to these systems, so one has many options as to how they will get to the games unlike in other regions where driving/flying is really one's only option. Some markets like my own(NYC metro area)have multiple teams as well making this possible too. I grew up as a big Islanders fan(NHL Hockey team)and as such we went to away games for 5 other teams, and the furthest travel time was MAYBE 4 hours, then I went away to university in northern Michigan where the closest pro team of any sport was 3 hours away one way by car and their closest opponent was an additional 5 hours added onto that lmao. So it is completely different region to region. Pro sports also aren't even the main attraction in all of America, the south east and parts of the midwest/mountain region are far more collegiate sports oriented than professional sports oriented, so the support is less rabid in those regions for pro clubs, and again all of that is in part due to their geography/history causing things to develop differently.

I love that the MLS is getting a following and it's great that they are trying to make atmosphere in the stadium. As a European it looks and feels so different to what we have though. I'm an Atlanta United supporter with German roots and experience attending matches in Germany, so it's really interesting for me to hear your take on the matchday experience here in the US. I'm always raving about matches in Germany. Some people in the comments here have talked about how college football (American) has a similar level of passion to what one may experience with European football. It's similar in ways, but European football ruined college football for me haha. It's not that college football isn't great - it's just that nothing in America (that I've seen) can hold a candle to what I experienced in Germany. As far as European football goes, I know that some clubs and leagues have a big issue with "hooliganism" from ultras. While some of those people obviously take things too far, I wish that we here Stateside would up the intensity and ferocity of our support sometimes. Back when I had season tickets to my local USL club, I was chastised a bit for encouraging chants that weren't "family friendly." To me, those are often some of the greatest chants to participate in. They hype you up, unsettle opponents, and so on. On the flip side of that topic, I do think that what you highlighted about unity and supporting the team is something American supporters to really well. You see so many big players come here after playing for huge clubs in Germany, England, Spain, and Italy that talk about how much kinder they're treated here. It's not that fans in Europe never show them kindness. Fans in America just don't bully them for losses and poor performances. They also don't linger on losses, having this "on to the next one" sort of mentality that I think can be a bit healthier sometimes. The matchday prices are ridiculous. I grew up in Atlanta, which is why I support this club, but I live pretty far away now (out of State) and I've never actually been to a home match myself - largely because of the cost associated with attendance (hotel, gas, etc.). I've been lucky enough to catch some great away matches, but even those tore a pretty large hole in my wallet despite not even buying merchandise or food. Parking, tickets, and beer already come out to outrageous amounts. That's an area where Germany really excels in my experience. Even in England, some of the clubs (like Arsenal, if I recall correctly) have outrageous ticket prices. I don't recall any of the matches I attended in Germany being too bad at all. And the beer was much better haha! Just my thoughts. Anyway, great video and I'm glad you enjoyed the match. With all of the interest in MLS being generated lately, I'm hoping we'll be able to share ideas and experiences that benefit the game worldwide.

I agree, I shared a similar comment, even lower league football in Europe where there are only 3000-4000 fans in attendance are more intimidating that this. They need to adopt a 'family area' and get the kids away from the 'home end' so that the less than family friendly atmosphere can be adopted, which will then affect the concentration of the opposition. No swearing policy is just laughable if you want a proper atmosphere.

Interesting watch, impressive/ beautiful stadium and great spectacle/ crowd participation. However the support seems a bit contrived,, it's as though everyone goes to have fun and the result just isn't that important and just a bonus. I'm from the UK and here it's all about the result, it's serious stuff, not exactly fun as the fans are too emotionally attached to their clubs. When a team win we are all on a high when they lose we leave the stadium depressed. Maybe we could learn something. Also my team Sheffield United are playing a friendly against Stuttgart on 5th August and I'll be going.

I don't mind if other people want to call the game Football. It just gets a little confusing when you're in the United States which sport you're talking about. If I want to be extremely clear I usually refer to neither sport as Football and instead use Soccer or American Football to refer to either sport. American Football is a fun game, too. I don't know why that last guy was talking so poorly about it. It just involves more strategy, which makes it much more complicated to try and follow. There's a very cool history why Americans use the terms Soccer and Football to refer to different sports, most people just aren't aware of it. Atlanta is known for having one of the best crowd environments in all of the MLS.

I love the strategy aspects of American Football and the intensity of it. I don’t mind the regular start stop associated with the game but the excessive tv advertising stops which have gotten worse over the years drives me nuts. I don’t have the patience for it like I used to. It’s driving me away from the sport.

While it isn't associated with MLS they have tons of teams between the 3 divisions and are going into talks about pro/rel currently. Hopefully in the future when the lower levels get some better infastructure and become worth more MLS will adopt it and become the top of the pyramid. We're talking at least a couple decades though.

If you ever get the chance to head out to the PNW, try to schedule a trip out there for a derby match between the Seattle Sounders FC and Portland Timbers FC. Those two clubs have played each other well before MLS, so there’s a deep history in this rivalry compared to other MLS rivalries. Both have passionate fanbases and hatred for the other club. Gotta put that matchup on your MLS bucket list.

Hands down one of the most annoying part of the US game is this whole soccer vs football bit. Folks started calling it soccer here because it's short for "association football". Clearly the latino community here is used to calling it football. Both are fine. It doesn't matter. Doesn't need to be a whole thing. Just an immature debate.

He seemed desperate to impress the European he was talking to. which is a weird trait among American soccer supporters. Like they’re annoyed that American football is a bigger sport here and want to prove that they’re “smarter” than everyone else in America by liking the correct sport and calling it the correct name. Nothing wrong with liking or disliking either or both sports for any reason. Just I dislike it because that kind of attitude drives potential soccer fans away imo because it makes us out to be snobs.

Tried to watch with an open mind and positive outlook, but just couldn't shake the cringe feeling. Feels like a cheap plastic copy of European/South American football. Respect to this guy, giving such a great and positive review, but he is 'bigging it up' to an unjust level, especially after being at Vfb Stuttgart matches, this video just isn't a football atmosphere in comparison to Europe. The fans need to be intimidating in order to be the 12th man and to inflate the team. This is not intimidating. I am not condoning hooliganism/football violence, but you need a stand behind the goal full of aggressive men who are loud and sometimes not 'family friendly' with their chants to create the desired results, the desired results is the opposition not being able to fully concentrate on their performance because they cannot get the noise and 'army' behind that goal out of their head. Like in European stadia, there should be a family area for the children and future football fanatics away from the 'troublesome' traditional home end, in which no opposition fan would dare set foot and no opposition player can ignore.

While I probably agree with most things you said, again, it’s a very European perspective and we’re talking about a club that has been founded in 2017 and are playing in a multi-functional arena that kills a lot of the atmosphere. All things considered I think they’re doing quite well. Give the MLS another 20 years or so and, by then, go and watch an actual rivalry and we talk again. My first VfB Stuttgart match was back in 1995 against Dortmund and despite the stadium being sold out, home support was pathetic and unorganised. There’s a right time for everything… or not. We’ll see where the MLS support goes in the coming years. And another thing I’m not missing from Europe are the tons of riot police who are more likely to cause an incident than the actual fans / ultras. For a change, I really enjoyed just walking into the stadium and not being body searched / not being treated like a fucking criminal just for wanting to watch a football match.
