GERMAN EVERYWHERE IN BARCELONA! (Chat w/ Me)

Today I’m doing a more informal chat with me about how much german there is in Barcelona, Spain! It’s been such an amazing surprise to hear german also every day, and definitely wasn’t something I was expecting. There is a large community of expats, german-speaking exchange students, and tourists in the city. I’ve truly spoken more german than spanish during this first month of my exchange! Hopefully this video is helpful if you’re considering moving to Barcelona, or just want to visit and know what it’s like! I also mentioned the German School of Barcelona which I was in contact with for a bit. Enjoy :)

Who am I?
My name is Montana Showalter, and I was a participant in the Congress Bundestag Youth Exchange program in 2019-2020. I started my KZread channel while living in Germany and continue to make videos on German vs American culture. I love finding aspects of German culture in the US as well as producing videos in German as practice! In the future, I hope to live abroad again :)

I loved that one: "I thought you where german. Why are you studying german?" Prior to our wedding, we had some baloons inflated at the local supermarket. And the young dude asked me: "Where does your accent come from?" "Hamburg, Germany" I replied. And he said: "Well I thought you where either english or scottish." Guess, how proud that made me feel! I had english at school. But never studied it. I youst trained myself, practising. Kinda makes you feel "at home", even in a foreign country, doesn't it?

The funniest thing is, that Germans that aren't keen on spending their holidays in Spain with fellow Germans end up with Dutch people. And Dutch people that aren't keen on Dutch end up with Germans. It always makes me smile...😂👍

Heeey! It's so cool you're back to releasing videos regularly-ish! For me btw it's easier to hear if someone's from Switzerland rather than hearing if someone's from Austria or Germany, cuz Austrian sounds a lot like Bavarian (Bayrisch) to me. (Please don't hate me, Bavarian people) Tho both Austrian and Swiss are quite hard to understand. For me at least. I was watching an Austrian tv show recently "Kottan ermittelt" that I think you'd like. And it's a great way to learn to understand other dialects of the German language. :) Hope you're doing good and I wish you all the best! Greetings from Germany!

Phonetically austrian is very similar to bavarian. Depends a little though since even the neighbouring village here in bavaria can speak differently. I think the biggest difference is words. We share a lot, but there are still many i might have heard of once in my life but would never use and they use it regularly

Keep up the good work

Some Germans love to make holidays in Spain. So we call Mallorca our 17. state.

These expat communities are usually very friendly and open-minded. Just introduce yourself on their online platform, and I'm sure you'll make some friends there.

Good Thing, you didn´t move to MALLORCA, Montana ! =D It´s (in)officially the "17.th Bundesland" of the German Federal Republic. 8-P And there, you´d surely meet much MORE Germans than Locals... but not the "beste Umgang", I might add. 8-/ Not the best Type of Acquaintances.
