Thank you! They keep trying to ram rod and weasel her into being a monster when she just simply speaks her mind. I saw an interview where the interviewer kept trying to make her be a monster that rages against trans people. Blaming her for inciting violence and assigning guilt to her that is just ridiculous. It shows how people that constantly squawk about tolerance and acceptance really can't accept or tolerate that someone doesn't agree with their drama.

"The Beautiful Boy (or just The Boy[1]) is a book by Germaine Greer, published in 2003. Its avowed intention was "to advance women's reclamation of their capacity for and right to visual pleasure". It is a study of the youthful male face and form, from antiquity to the present day, from paintings and drawings to statuary and photographs. The cover picture caused minor controversy when the subject of the photograph, Björn Andrésen, a Swedish actor and musician who played Tadzio in Death in Venice (billed by the director Luchino Visconti as "the most beautiful boy in the world") stated in the press that he objected to the picture having been used without his permission.[2][3] The book contains some 200 pictures of boys through the ages, and is a history of boys in art. Pictures and discussions range from Cupid to Elvis, Boy George, Kurt Cobain, and Jim Morrison. Greer has described the book as "full of pictures of 'ravishing' pre-adult boys with hairless chests, wide-apart legs and slim waists". She goes on to say that, "I know that the only people who are supposed to like looking at pictures of boys are a subgroup of gay men," she wrote in London's Daily Telegraph. "Well, I'd like to reclaim for women the right to appreciate the short-lived beauty of boys, real boys, not simpering 30-year-olds with shaved chests."[4] She was criticized for these comments with some writers labeling her a paedophile.[5] Germaine Greer responded vigorously on Andrew Denton's television talk show Enough Rope.[6]" -Wikipedia en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Beautiful_Boy?fbclid=IwAR1b9WojCgy7YOig2T_uCiXHtTj5xau5NXXi4LLh0-xzWZakV6jUOVJRLWE Female Pedophiles: kzread.info/dash/bejne/paCukpqxgMa6mLQ.html

Even in 2023 women's big issues, like their health during pregnancy and menopause, are being neglected and treated as 'natural' and that we have to stand all the pains, the inconveniences that men would never accept for them,, the sleepless nights, hot flushes, etc, etc that we have to put up with, these very important issues for us have to wait to discuss gender. In a BBC interview (whose comment section is closed), the interviewer asked Greer if she considered a trans woman a woman. She said no. The interviewer said that the trans woman would be very insulted to hear that. She said: "I don't care, people get insulted all the time." We need to bring this attitude back. We don't have to be dicks to others for no reason. But we must also acknowledge that courtesy is voluntary, not mandatory. If I insulted you, ask me to apologize. If I refuse to apologize--well, that's that and there is nothing you can do.

I have some disagreements and objections, but if I set those aside, I also admire her. I do find that her rhetorical presentation can sometimes be a little too bombastic. It usually works, but sometimes backfires in a bad way. Her attitudes about transwomen, in particular, veer off into vulgarity of a kind that is far too reminiscent of how true misogynists once spoke about women (and some still do, if they are shameless enough.) If she doesn't want to speak about transgender issues, then why does she seem to have so much to say. And whence this apparently unavoidable instinct to, as she says "be insulting" towards them? On a human level, this is a little bizarre. A gentleman at a party I attended once started saying quite hateful things about women - true vulgar misogyny in its pure form - and he concluded by saying, "But I really just don't care that much about women or women's rights. It isn't my thing. There are better causes to fight for." My reponse to him could be the same to Greer speaking about trans people, "If you truly don't care, why have you just spent all this time saying so much about them?"

A very tricky issue that few people feel they can honestly speak about. One of the things that rarely gets discussed because it simply sounds so damn awful:. The popular notion that rape is one of the worst and most traumatizing violent crimes comes from old gender stereotypes wherein women are presumed to be weak, vulnerable, emotionally unstable and fragile. If you pay close attention, you can find those old sexist ideas lurking in the background in many discussions of the crime of rape and in popular media. There's an awful serialized American crime television show which is very guilty of this: Law and Order: Special Victims. I have never seen a work of fiction stuggle so much with how to represent the subject of rape - and every crime in that television show which the detectives go about trying to solve is a rape. It speaks volumes.

So why does she insist otherwise. I detect a pattern in her thought and rhetoric, as much as i agree with her on several points. She often caricatures her opposition. I don't think she even realizes she's doing it. Perhaps it is her age. Forty years ago, what is now a caricature might have then been fairly accurate. But these days it looks quite like she is erecting straw man arguments. That's unfortunate, because I do think feminists of her generation are very accomplished.

Regarding the part about Germaine saying a rape "shouldn't destroy a woman" - I can see how people would jump to conclusions and think she meant, "You shouldn't feel as though you've been done wrong", or something along those lines. But, I can't see it any other way than her telling people that they're stronger than they think they are, and shouldn't let a horrible experience make you feel as though you can't function, or are less valuable in some way. There's no doubt that people DO end up feeling that way (among many other feelings, I imagine), but regardless of whatever kind of traumatizing or damaging experience a person goes through, you have to perform a reality check on yourself, and ask yourself two questions: 1). What do I have left - what has this experience absolutely and *irreversibly* taken from me? 2). Where do I want to go from here, with what I still have? A person's mental strength is what they make it, and you can recover from even grievous physical wounds. Germaine wants people to be strong, as any self-respecting, empathetic person does, I believe.

@@alegriart There's no pretense here - only insight. You're free to disagree, as you obviously do. Verbal comments are driven by inner belief, and this *is* an interview in which I assume she had time to organize her thoughts for beforehand. It wasn't a passing comment, like what you'd get from a street interview; it's her life's philosophy, one which she formed with her own experiences, and has spoken about at length on numerous occasions, including this one. One doesn't simply dedicate their time to writing books, being interviewed, and speaking in public for no good reason. You shouldn't be so quick to dismiss another's intentions because what they say bothers you. *Why* a person says something is often more important than exactly what they said.

Rape has historically not been taken seriously so today we overcompensate by inflating the issue. People try to appear helpful by giving sympathy. But this approach only damages victims rather than empower them. At some point, people need to stop moping, get therapy (if needed) and improve their lives. But people dont want to appear like they are minimising the issue by telling a rape victim to get things in perspective. When in reality thats the only way to help them.

I share her views on that topic as well. No one wants anything like that to happen to them, but you don't need to let it permanently destroy or define you either. It doesn't destroy or define you unless you allow it to.

There are a great many variables on both rape and rape victims. She was raped once, by one man. She was an adult at the time. Most importantly, she is a product of her time, a time when most of us didn't report it and simply put it on the back burner. But, tellingly, she remembers every tiny detail of it. If it hadn't affected her, she'd barely remember it. Do you remember in detail the food poisoning you had (one night) 60 years ago? I doubt it. Just an analogy.

Germaine is practical with a huge amount of common sense. Those that can't accept what she says can't cast a shadow on her by saying she's a drama queen because she has no drama about her. The fact that she speaks clearly and sanely about people changing their genders really stokes some people. And all because she's speaking the plain truth. You got to love her. This is so fascinating! I am someone who was sexually abused as a child. I have been defined and self stigmatized by my abusee and allowed it power and control over my life that it did not deserve. Our culture promotes this mentality that it is something that terrible and ruins lives. I have dissociative disorder, which basically means I have separated myself from the emotions that come from the memories of my abuse. I have spent years and years in therapy trying to unearth and find emotions connected to the memory. It I had just been encouraged to accept it as a gift and to move on with my life, I would have been so much better off. Instead I sat around for years dwelling on and rehashing the abuse in the effort to 'connect' the emotions with the memory so as to then supposedly 'release' the trauma. I have never been able to do that but have lost years and years by dwelling and wallowing in some past bad experience. I see what she is trying to say completely, I think she just needs to maybe speak more clearly about this as a mentality of empowerment. It's unfortunate that many people I think will miss the forest for the trees with her words. Many people need to hear words like this as a way forward after something awful happens. To put it in perspective to it's small space of time in someone's life span! I think she is a wonderful womens advocate and yet many women will shut out her words and perceive her as hostile or bigoted. Its unfortunate.

Now men wanting to be women are intent on taking everything from women, even their identity as a woman . Is that not the ultimate misogyny??? One of the great thinkers of our times and people need to stop , listen and learn . We are NOT here on this earth to placate peoples feelings by changing society to make them feel better . We change it when real tangible threats exist to equity in opportunities to live , breath , eat , drink , good education and health . We strive to give equality of opportunity. Men are disenfranchised and now rudderless as to what they are and their purpose . Some women have made feminism misandry and not about thriving within the female identity and not needing to degrade mens rights by default .

I was sexually abused at 8 years old. I told my mum as soon as i got away. It was a man at her office and school holiday, so i was with her at work. Of cause this affected me to a certain extent but this incident didn't destroy my life. There are much more painful things in life that i have had to deal with. What i have found difficult is that people think i Should Be Destroyed by it and that it must have affected me much more. It is this that i have had difficulties with, as when the Jimmy Savile cases came up and the Rochdale cases my partner thought that I Must take what happened to me to the police, when to me it was something long forgotten about. I'm so glad to hear her explain that we are not abnormal to want to just move on from it and realise that it would be just prolonging the situation to drag it all back up Again. Why make something a never ending situation when it is already over and done with!! This isn't to say that the man wasn't bad, of course he was but i have a life and i don't wish to make it at least a year or two of dealing with so much stress.

@Justin j or even serious PTSD. some women go through a period or years of PTSD from very bad rapes. it is similar to being shell shocked from war. War has been made on your body. War has been made on the INSIDE of your body. Some women don't fall apart afterward, or at least it is not outwardly visible. I would imagine that if some girl is beaten and gang raped by 8 guys and barely survives the experience she might have more damage to her psyche than someone else. Connie Frances was a grown women and had years of PTSD and agoraphobia from her experience. Germaine had something in her personality, behavior, and life experiences that gave her the resilience to be able to heal quickly and just pull herself together and carry on. Who can say how anyone will process something like this. There are a lot of factors; previous abuse, poverty, mental health, physical health, confidence, ability to adapt to grief or rage, many things go into how rape will affect a person. Fantastic Germaine Greer! So intelligent and articulated

Before I read "Catch and Kill" I might have agreed with Germaine here, and in some cases I still agree, but specifically in the Harvey Weinstein situation from everything I have read about the women who accused Harvey Weinstein many of them did go to the police and did go to HR departments and tried to file charges. Harvey Weinstein had connections in the DA's office and a huge team of lawyers and connections in news and hired all sorts of people to go after these women. Most of them finally agreed to a settlement because they decided it was the only way they could ever get any accountability when the criminal case clearly wasn't going anywhere. One woman had in her settlement agreement that Harvey had to go for treatment and the studio had to review its policies - two things that likely never happened, which is the most she could do to try to protect future victims. Yes, there are definitely cases where women have taken money instead of filing charges out of greed, but specifically when it comes to the Harvey Weinstein accusers there are several women that really did the best they could to try to take that monster down and Harvey was just too big for them to bring him to justice. I still agree with Germaine in many cases, but I think we need to be careful about judging how someone like Rose McGowen responded to the very unusual and extreme harassment and intimidation she experienced beyond just the sexual abuse.

I agree with your comments on this subject. I also feel uncomfortable in her comments on here, and other interviews about rapes and sexual assaults. We are not all as empowered as her, and it impacts everyone differently. I do admire some of her other observations on life and feminism though.

I don't agree with everything that she says, but I like her and respect her views. She is a freethinker, which is why she won't ever be accepted in the intolerant dogmatic world of intersectional social fascism of the modern 'liberal'. You actually feel as if you could have a conversation with her, and an interesting one at that.

There is a saying: Scratch a liberal, and you can see the fascist underneath. Classic role-reversal at play. These so-called "liberals" are the most dogmatic and intolerant people, the more woke the worse.
