Geringhoff corn head flexes and folds

How about an 18-row corn head that folds for transport and also flexes to follow the contours of fields with eroded hills or terraces?
That's the big news from combine head manufacturer Geringhoff at Agritechnica, the agriculture innovation showcase in Hanover, Germany.
In this report, Geringhoff product manager Hendrik Schneider tells RealAgriculture's Shaun Haney that the company began making smaller, flexible heads years ago, but with the increasing demand for bigger heads, it's now adding the feature to its larger models, which also require folding capabilities.
"We started with eight rows. Now the corn head is getting bigger and bigger so we thought since they're getting bigger and wider, we need to make them flexible as well," says Schneider. Those larger heads also need to fold for transport, which produces a unique combination. "When you unfold them you still have the flexibility in the field. So that's also a world's first for us, and for the market to have a flexible, folding corn head," he notes.
"They split in the middle and the wings work independently - hydraulically they can be hinged up and down," Schneider explains. "They have total flex range of eight degrees up and also eight degrees down."
Schneider says Geringhoff's focus on farmer needs is a key factor that differentiates the German-based company from competitors. It produces a wide range of corn heads that vary in width, straw processing and residue management capabilities. He also stresses that Geringhoff always works with gear boxes, eliminating chains, belts and power drives to create smooth, efficient power and very durable machines.
