"Bring back the George" tells the true story of what really happened to New Zealand's much loved Georgie Pie restaurants. For many, Georgie Pie was a childhood highlight, a treasured family spot and a place where memories were born. Georgie Pie was at the height of popularity when it mysteriously closed its doors for good in the mid 90s.
Thanks to all who were involved in the making of this documentary, please see credits section at end of doco.

I frequented the original Kelston Georgie Pie in the early 80's and onwards. Those were the best pies of all time. It's enough to make a grown man cry.

As a former Lynn-Mall (New Lynn, West Auckland) Georgie Pie Employee this was a fantastic watch and I loved my time at the company and the the mall branch. I've been in Oz since "97 and seeing some of the old adds like Benji and the Flight of the Navigator was a real trip to the past I would love to have been able to get there for just one last pie. I miss those Mince and Cheese pies.. or our Apple pie with ice cream.

I remember after saturday rugby(me then brothers game) with dad coaching 1 team and sisters netball we would go get GP for lunch.. Then go watch either the seniors of the rugby club or go to the auckland team game if a home game mid afternoon then back to the rugby clubrooms for prizegiving.. No wonder my parents slept in on sundays

I know if I lived around the time Georgie Pie was around in New Zealand, I would have been born a year before the first Georgie Pie would open. By the looks of the documentary I would have been devouring those pies. It looked delicious. That's not all I captured from the documentary. I learned how wonderful the people seem to be. Me. New Zealanders just have so much drive and heart. Your country just enticed me to visit. Amazing Doc!

I barely remember it. I went to the one in Takanini as a kid. Loved it. They had a ball pit I went in. It closed not too long after. Apparently closed in 1998 all the stores. I was only 6. Doesn't seem it closed that soon. Sure it was later (1999) I do remember getting a pie though. Also got them at Hunters Plaza I think. They had stiff crusts around the edges. Kind of remember the taste.

Does anybody remember "Uncles" food bars? They are gone also! Georgia Pie was King of pies No.1 bestseller in its hey day. Value for money perfectly made with the best pastry second to none a real family place to visit. Used to go on my lunch break to buy one until one day I went but it just closed without much notice only to say GP is closing no reason given as to why all branches closing & staff made jobless overnight! I was gutted had no lunch that day was heartbroken. Unfortunately, due to poor management of expansions & business practices they fell on hard times leaving them open for big global giants to take advantage of their vulnerable state. Being sold to globalization was worse thing for Kiwi icon as McDonald's clearly knew they couldn't compete with GP so they did what any bully does best take them out but in our case for good NO RETURN as Kiwis love their pies too much more than burgers! McDonald's did not win the loyalty of fans of the pies as it left everyone with a bitter taste in their mouths as how could this have happened to a good successful business serving generations of die hard pie lovers! McDonald's will never bring GP back don't we all know it. They tried to in a promotion period but it was all hype total crap pies nothing like GP!! Hope someday the King of pies reigns again, never buy from McDonald's as they have no concept of making pies & they throughout history have stolen & burned businesses & taken ideas from others claiming for themselves as they have the funds & powers to do it as $$$ talks! GP is gone but never forgotten we all still have fond memories & they can't take those away from us ! ❤😄👍

Absolutely, as soon as they made that move it was the start of the death spiral. Sent the wrong message that their pies were only worth a dollar, and left no room for inflation. No one with any sense bought a slightly bigger pie for twice the price! Just a epically stupid business move.

You also missed out hard, GP had the best pies. you could go there and get like pies for 2 bucks and they were not small either but most ppl would still buy a few each because they were so cheap. I think the regular pies where 1 dollar and the cheese one where 2 dollars i recall something like this loosely but i don't recall the other flavours. You could also get a combo so chips and a drink. i recall that the parents would just buy a few of each for each kids or like in a combo but with extra pies and what you couldn't eat just got doggy bagged home for later. like it was the shit i would say better than McDonalds. Well at least the McDonalds we have now as imo its gone downhill since the 90s. Most 90s kids in the north island would of had a birthday party at Georgie pie 100% and probably going back because it was since the 70s. They need to bring it back. I recall going there as a kid and it was always packed like you could barley get seats and often you would have to wait until other people leave. The one we used to go to was always kind of messy because it was so busy but it was good.

We went thru the Georgie Pie drive-thru in Christchurch in a stretch limousine. The bend in the drive-thru proved to be quite a challenge. Hence, that was the first and last time that limo went thru the Georgie Pie drive-thru. 😂

Very interesting and well made doco. I did wonder how long they would last though, when we could spend $13 get 10 pies, 2 fries and a drink! Very few people were buying the more expensive large pies and unfortunately it killed them in the end. A crappy end to a great pie franchise.
