Georgia: Trekking in the High Caucasus

Georgia sits astride the mighty Caucasus Mountains between the Black and Caspian Seas and offers a breath-taking variety of landscapes and habitats. The range of flora is absolutely astounding. Following the bloodless Rose Revolution of 2003 and the Russo-Georgian War of 2008, it is becoming a very popular trekking destination due to its beauty and the rich cultural heritage it offers. Wild camping is permitted almost everywhere, and rustic homestays in authentic mountain villages provide a great way to meet the local people. Our film was shot in July of 2017 and features some of the best trekking areas of Kazbegi, Khevsureti and Svaneti. The settlements featured include the highest permanently occupied village group in Eurasia - Ushguli. Read our Georgia travel blogs:

    Hi Dougie, glad you enjoyed the film and thanks for your kind words. We'll be putting up a travel blog about our treks in Georgia shortly. It's still pretty underdeveloped for international tourism which adds to its charm. Trails are being developed and upgraded and some are more used than others (i.e., in Svaneti). But overall the number of people trekking was not too many, and these were mainly from Eastern Europe and Russia; we met very few people from Britain and Ireland. Most people were independent backpackers and we really enjoyed chatting to them.

    Purple Peak Adventures It's somewhere I'll need to visit before the landscape is 'developed' then. What are the tall, tower structures? Are they silos?

  • @EtherealLightPhotography

    @EtherealLightPhotography

    6 жыл бұрын

    Dougie, they're defensive towers which date mainly from the medieval period when blood feuding was endemic, and were used as a place of refuge for extended families, their livestock, goods and chattels. Precious religious items were also occasionally stored within them, particularly those in Svaneti, to keep them safe from marauding Mongol, Persian and Arab invaders. Yes, go soon, as the numbers of tourists will just keep on rising and many places will undoubtedly lose their rustic charm.

    Purple Peak Adventures Thanks, what tour company did you use?

  • @EtherealLightPhotography

    @EtherealLightPhotography

    6 жыл бұрын

    Dougie, we didn't use a tour company, we arranged everything ourselves via the internet (flights from Dublin with Lufthansa, train bookings, restaurants, hotel in Tbilisi, homestays in Svaneti, taxis etc.) as we are hoping to take people trekking there in future. Many young people speak very good English, older people can speak Russian, so knowing a few words and phrases helps a lot.

    Beautiful video. I love how green it is in the valleys and on the mountain sides. This country must have been a very dangerous place in the long ago past. Watch towers everywhere, now they just add to the rustic beauty of the place.

    Hi Tomasz, it's Ana Bajiashvili of the group Iavnana, singing a Georgian folk song named ოროველა (Orovela). It's a truly haunting melody that touched me profoundly the first time I heard it. It captures the soul of Georgia perfectly.

    Heini, thank you so much for your kind comments, especially so coming from someone who is so experienced in trekking and wild camping. We film in 4K using Panasonic cameras and photos/time lapse are mostly done with a full frame Pentax dSLR. Downside is having to carry all the gear plus kit, tent and food. This year was exceptionally hot in Georgia (40 deg Tbilisi and even hot and humid in the mountains) so progress was not the fastest! But Georgia is a fantastic place to visit. Lovely people. Great food and even better wine. Also great value for money with accommodation, food and drinks a third of the cost in the West.

    Thanks for the comment, much appreciated. I usually carry a full frame Pentax K1 dSLR with 28-105mm lens (often plus a 20mm or 14mm lens for astro photography), various ND and grad filters (with holder), 4 to 6 batteries and a small carbon fibre tripod. About an extra 4kg to 5kg on top of a 20kg+ back pack!. I partner carries a Panasonic GH4 with 14-140mm lens (mainly for the video) and batteries and we share the tripod. Hope this helps

    Joakim Henriksen This is the Georgian Folk peasant plough song__ Gadi gamodi, Gutano. I will try to translate: Go out and come back, my plow , Sing the bass, little wheel Cut into the ground , Cut the roots of the weeds. My cherished plow, With your crooked neck; U are the bringer of bread, And the protector of barley Georgia have rich Musical Culture that counts over Centuries. Georgian polyphony is an invaluable tradition listed UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. They are singing sense ancient times, during celebration Feasts (Supra) , weddings and even funerals. Georgia has rich and still vibrant traditional music, which is primarily known as arguably the earliest polyphonic tradition of the Christian World. There are great number of healing songs, funerary ritual songs, Dance songs, lullabies, traveling songs... U can go U-tube and see ( if u wish) Hamlet Gonashvili Songs. and Georgian dances like: Sukhishvilebi. Dance: Sdo, Daisi, Osiri... u will loved ... I hope u will enjoy.
