1:32:48 What a game changing play! A trap block by the guard on 3 tech. Then Def End #58 stayed put so the read was a give to B Back Dwyer. 8 in the box vs 7 blockers. minus D end who got optioned, minus the other D end who is backside too far to stop a quick hitting give. So now 6 D vs 7 blockers, without a single double team, its already big play! But when Lone Safety plays the outside pitch, that's at least a 50 yard play and its enough to score here. Such an expansive run playbook, there's the base option but there's pulling guards and angle blocks like good old Power O. It looks like the faster lighter Bulldog defenders with NFL futures in pass defense got tired out and suddenly, its 30 yard runs.

Talent here includes: Matt Stafford, Aj Green, Daniel Ellerbe (one phenomenal 2012 Ravens season), D tackle Geno Atkins, Steelers RB Dwyer, All pro WR Demarius Thomas with only ONE CATCH because its flexbone option, safety Morgan Burnett, edge defender Justin Houston. There's more, but Jesus Christ its like an all star game! Geno Atkins from 2011-2015 was Aaron Donald level, lost 2014 to injury, back to all pro or at least all conference to 2018. I gotta see this game again.

That 2008 UGA team was so overrated. SI's number one team to start the season. UGA had no run defense and that spells disaster. Something that woud haunt Richt his entire UGA career...stopping the run.

Overrated; because they didn't beat the super teams of Florida and Alabama. If you're not in the championship game, you ssssuucck. SI's looking at the talent on this Georgia team. There's total STARS like AJ Green and Geno Atkins, who dominated the 3 tech position for 8 years, the Aaron Donald/Warren Sapp #1 DTackle. Stafford is the QB. Knowshon. Ellerbe. Justin Houston. So maybe Richt's staff sucked at using this talent. And the Defense created NFL stars where pass rush and coverage is king, where slower run defenders are cheap and easy to find.

2000's NCAA was still a running league, only 2015- present has the pass become king. When Saban has to admit the old ways of Run the ball and play defense is finished, it's finished. I love the run, when I first started building an archive of recorded great games...I used to only watch recorded games with at least 200-300 rushing yards combined. Now that's stupid. It's way more schematically interesting to appreciate pass game vs coverage, the run game is great, Power/Counter will ALWAYS be my favorite plays, but now, Mills is # 3 smartfootball.com/offense/the-science-of-the-post-going-deep-with-mills#sthash.sbIfdROx.dpbs

UGA had a ridiculous schedule that year. Arizona State on the road, turn around and played Bama at home. 4 consecutive games on the road including LSU and Florida. Not a chance they weren’t eating 2 losses there. They ended up eating 3.

As it pertains to this game, Tech just wanted it more. Dawgs were a worn out team after that blowout loss to Florida.

Georgia Tech doesn't run a triple option offense it's more like the veer offense.

Flexbone. It's a little more multiple then the Wishbone that reigned in the 70's. However; Veer IS Triple Option. www.coachwyatt.com/veerexplained.html

The Wishbone had 3 Backs behind QB; the most common play optioned a D tackle with a FB give or keep; then an outside QB run in which he could run or pitch to a trailing back while the lead back was a Lead Blocker. Paul Johnson's Flexbone flexes those two Backs wide to a position where today's H-Back would go; you know; sort of like the TE who goes in motion on so many spread offenses? From there they are pass threats as well as used as pitch backs. But what really makes GA Tech unique is use of the old Run and Shoot principles. That 4 WR Spread offense that people shit on in the NFL for years and years. smartfootball.blogspot.com/2008/12/paul-johnsons-flexbone-meets-run-and.html

The triple option is just one play, they ran maybe 20% of the time under coach Johnson. Over all it's a flexbone playbook with a host of plays. Calling it the triple option offense is like calling it the sprint draw every time a team lines up in the I-formation. Theres more depth to it than that. The option style offense is controversial either way you look at it, I'm no coach or expert, I cant defend or denounce it, it has its uses but it lacks versatility and with defenses getting better and faster its fading in what popularity it had left but it's still not without a level of effectiveness. That's why even pro style offenses still have a few scattered various option plays in the old book, they just dont run em much.
