Georgia: clashes break out between police and protesters over 'foreign agents' bill

Riot police armed with water cannon and teargas have been accused of beating protesters who picketed outside Georgia’s parliament to try to stop a final vote on a controversial “foreign influence” law.

Critics fear the bill, which is due to have its third reading on Monday and final vote on Tuesday, will stifle the media and NGOs. The US has said parliamentarians must choose between Kremlin-style laws or the Euro-Atlantic democratic path they had embarked upon

If your country is on the path to join the EU, as Georgia is, and every EU citizen must be equal in every EU state, live, work and do business. Then it makes no sense that, for example, a German who opens a business in Georgia needs to be signed up as a foreign agent, since Georgians don't have too. Joining the EU means giving up some sovereignty, but that is each country's decision and there are rules to follow. No need to even say about how fr**king sketchy the law is on its own, which is another tool to silence anyone with a legal excuse.
