Georgetown | Penang Peranakan (Baba, Nyonya) @ Kebaya Dining Room [ Lifestyle in Malaysia ]

Armed with their passed on secrets, Kebaya Dining Room (Michelin-selected in 2022) applies very innovative cooking methods using traditional Malaysian flavour profiles, Vietnamese lightness, Thai spiciness, and traditional French cooking styles. In this innovative produce, Kebaya delivers surprising new twists on this already fascinating cuisine.
Georgetown, the capital of the island Penang, is named after the British King George III. The city is located at the northeast side of the island and has, suburbs included, about 550.000 inhabitants. After Penang was handed over by the sultan of Kedah to the English, Sir Francis Light founded the city Georgetown.
Peranakan refer to the Straits Chinese, or known as Baba-Nyonya. This an unique hybridization of ancient Chinese culture with the local cultures of the Nusantara region.
From as early as the 16th Century, when migrants travelled from their home country to Malaya, some began to adopt the local culture and inter-married with the locals. Some folklores suggest that Peranakan roots in Malaya began with a princess from China who married a local prince.
The root word for Peranakan comes from the Malay and Indonesian word ‘anak’, or child, referring to locally born descendants. The Peranakans are considered a multiracial community, with the caveat that individual family histories vary widely and likewise self-identification with multiracialism as opposed to Chineseness varies widely.
The Malay phrase OCBC "Orang Cina Bukan Cina" ("a not-Chinese Chinese person") encapsulates the complex relationship between Peranakan identity and Chinese identity.

Nice you like the Nyonya food. The song title is Lenggang Kangkung. The lyrics is based on a pantun (type of Malay poetic format).

Good questions. I did some research. Blue ceramics plate is common in the Chinese culture. The colour blue gained special significance in the history of Chinese ceramics during the Tang dynasty (618-907). The distinctive colour in blue-glazed pottery and porcelain comes from cobalt ores imported from Persia, which were a scarce ingredient at the time and used in only limited quantities.
