This was super helpful and has me interested in reading The Accursed Share now. Thanks!
Bataille's critique of productivity seems from the synopsis given somewhat similar to the underlying idea that people like Negri and Agamben have with "deactivation" or "the refusal to work". By kind of completely refusing productivism. Also damn Bataille really has a unique conception of political economy. I remember some friends talking about connecting some of his stuff to the conception of political economy as a kind of heat engine, should really get back to them about that.

I almost put a bit on the refusal of work in this video, but it seemed to stray from my focus. I think your analysis is spot on.
This is a really dense and well done video. I haven’t thought about Batailles for a while. Thanks.

My goal was to keep it under 10 minutes-that didn’t work. But I hope it was interesting enough to send folks to the work itself.
I would love to see if someone from a community that engages in potlatch if Bataille got any of it right lol. Could be similar to his deal with Gnostics, but there are living descendent communities still engaging in potlatch stuff.
Good to see you! Studying sovereignty atm so looking forward to this.
Well explained
Well goddamn, finally the Acid Horizon format I kinda craved lmao also, the editing was slick dude

Cheers. More on the way soon.
I teach some of this stuff at the graduate level and this guy is on point. I wish I explained it this well in my classes 🤣
Love this format. Give us more of it!
Nice video
Great video man! Very insightful. I've had a lot of trouble getting into Bataille's work
This is really excellent. It's hard not to envy someone who just discovered Bataille and the combo of exhilaration and delightful mind-fuck that accompanies first reading him. PS. Nice drip you got on there too......
Bataille is indeed a very interesting author. However, La Parte maudite is from 1949. And I think that matters... because the "bourgeoisie" mentioned in that book is fundamentally different from the capitalists nowadays... In fact, I think that after the 60's, with the advent of the consumer society, everything changed not only for the "upper class" but also for the "proletariats"... In that sense, I believe that J. Baudrillard's work is much more in tune with our times (considering that Baudrillard updated most of Bataille's core ideas).
why do we not hear about Bataille in Byung-Chul Han?
Wonderful video! It takes so much effort to prep and plan these condensed summaries, so much gratitude (I'm just a lazy, textual-analysis gal). Bataille (Visions of Excess) is on my shelf and I'm waiting until I can put it through the cycle, so I appreciate this taste of some of his ideas and terms before I dive in myself. Hope the reading group is going well! I shall watch more videos.

Thanks for the thoughtful comment. Once I get some more free time, I will do some more.
That was fantastic Craig. Would love to see these short concept videos alongside the longer discussions.

this condensed video is great
Is looking at art an expression of sovereignty? Ik bataille was very critical of the art of his time but what about looking at abstract art?
it's always interesting to put a face to a voice I've been listening to for ages
More short introduction videos would be welcomed! Great stuff.
After listening to the podcast for a while now I did not imagine Craig having a mohawk lol

It’s the pandemic haircut that never quit.
Fellas, I was just reading Plato in the park when a bird literally shit on the page in front of Me. A sign from god? But he shit on Plato…. So I don’t understand? We must be dealing with a god that makes jokes. Or I’m going crazy!! One or the other, thought I’d share
Accursed Share series when.....!!!!!!!!

I think we will get started in late August or early September in the reading group.
This was an experience of sovereignty!
