On a elevator in Tampa, I accidentally backed right into George. He gave me a scowling dirty look. Then he broke into the same great smile he has here. We both laughed.

Only David Letterman could pull off a moment like that on TV. Billy Martin was good for TV and baseball.

A gem. Occasionally I'll re-watch the time Steinbrenner and Billy Martin were on together when Billy tells the story of shooting the old mule with Mickey. Thanks.

Steinbrenner had a LOT of flaws, but goddamn if he wasn’t entertaining and committed to winning. As a Red Sox fan, the rivalry hasn’t been nearly as fun since he passed.

Yeah, I just looked it up. Martin had 5 stints as Yankee skipper and probably more if he hadn't died in the car crash.

And then, after the commercial break, Whitney Houston came out and blew the roof off the place with a devastating performance of "Saving All My Love For You". Pretty good program that night in Rockefeller Center.

Steinbrenner really was a chameleon!! He could be the most obnoxious a$$hole bully on Earth--and yet he had a great sense of humor--could laugh at himself--and had a very warm and generous side to him. A VERY complex man!!
