Музыка
The is an excerpt from Flatpicking Guitar Magazine's instructional DVD "Clinch Mountain Guitar." The instructional portion of the video is taught by James Alan Shelton, the guitar player for Ralph Stanley and the Clinch Mountain Boys. This peice is from the begining of the DVD where James interviews George Shuffler, the man who first used the crosspicking technique when playing with the Stanley Brothers in the 1950s. Both these men are gone now. George Shuffler died back in April and James Alan Shelton passed away earlier this evening. R.I.P. George and James.
The man is a legend! Back in the late 50`-early 60s, Ray Davis used to put on Stanley Brothers concerts in the Baltimore area (He had to call them "John`s Gospel Quartet" due to contract conflicts) and recorded Ralph, Carter and George on his own "Wango" label. Ray, Don Reno, George and the Stanleys opened up a whole new world for me. Thanks for posting this!
Great video, George is a living legend, and my favourite crosspicker!
A good instructional video from one of the early bluegrass masters. Shuffler contributed so much to the early Stanley Brothers sound, they might not have survived without him.
George Shuffler, one of my all-time guitar picking heroes!!!
HOw could you give this less than 5 stars? Thanks for posting. I'll be sure to share with my friends. George is a living legend for sure! Super job on the video and uploading.
George is so sweet he is my bestfriends grandpa and he rocks!
I've been playing the crosspicking style for a long time and I really enjoy it. But let me tell you crosspicking sounds easy, buy it really isn't! The d lick at the end of this song is tough! George might not be as polished sounding as some of the new pickers, but he has the mountain sound that I love and he was doing this when no one else was! One of the best pioneers in the business!!!

I agree I learned to cross pick by watching doc Watson however I dont play exacly like doc but that's how I learned. It took me along time to make it sound right. But itvwas worth it,,,,I use a thumb pick instead of a flat pick,,,
"i'll do the best i can" not only a great player but a champ as well
George plays like he's 20! RIP George.
So beautiful and so talented !!!-------------Ernest E. Johnson
Oh boy! So so terrific. Thanks for posting.
Mighty fine pickin'. Met the great James Shelton at a Ralph Stanley concert in Tucson, Arizona. Played his CD on my radio show on KPYT 100,9FM.
You are correct, that is Mr. Shuffler's Huss and Dalton Signature model.
A gem.
Terrific!
by god, i gave him 5 stars. George is a cross pickin monster. And yea, he's every part of raplh and carter stanley sound.
In old interviews Shuffler admits he got the idea from Bill Napier who was recorded Crosspicking when Shuffler was playing bass with the Stanley’s. The rift between the Stanley’s and Napier extended to Shuffler hence why later on he was adamant he invented it when both Napier and Don Reno were doing it on guitar before him.
The Stanley brothers were amazing
Right, Bill Napier was doing it with the Stanleys before George.

Proof?
a lot of people pick it d u d u d u because they're used to alternate picking, but shuffler used d d u d d u d d u to get that banjoish sound
great video, I want more!! would like to hear some of James Shelton picking more.
Clinch Mountain Guitar
Never heard of him, I love the originals !!
no one ever did it better, absolutely no one
" I'll try to do the best I can...!!" George you are my idol. Watch this video carefully, in some places he appears to be damping some top strings with the fingertips of his right hand...
george shuffler is my cousin and he is one of the greats. if you dont believe me jusk me
2 of the best if u think its easy by watching try it for yourself
The pickin, playin, & music of Appalachia. Mr. Shuffler also played bass. Can you imagine a band leader telling George Shuffler "you get over there on the bass". 😂🤠🎻🎵

And sang beautiful baritone. George did everything required, bass players say he was as innovative on that as on the flat top. Bluegrass all rounder unparalleled.
rip George.
Just learning wish i could practice more though
the best that ever was
and also there are a live version which mean that this part in fact is pure ability and that is not a studio trick
So when he plays, is he playing a triplet for each beat?
He literally didn't come up with it. He admitted he learned it from Bill Napier who played lead guitar for the Stanley brothers while Shuffler played Bass. Napier was recorded doing crosspicking before Shuffler even played guitar for the Stanley brothers.
What a gangster
Mr. blueggrasssingman,..-its " Whitley" isn't it instead of "Whitney"???
Looks like he has a spoon in his shirt pocket beside the pen......trick of the light?
If you want a good video to show more advanced, relaxed right hand picking, check out videos by Frank Vignola, Joscho Stephan, Stochelo Rosenberg. Even Tony Rice does not rest his hand on the top. All of these people have vids on KZread.
It looks like a custom D-45
Do those paterns enough, they become muscle memory. Just takes time then it clicks one day. Just keep working from being able to do it cleanly, no matter how slow, and work from there. It will click one day.
is it d d u or d u d u d u?

No, actually Napier was recorded doing crosspicking before Shuffler even played guitar for the Stanley brothers. Napier did indeed come up with crosspicking on the guitar.
well George is almost the Father of the crosspicking and i' know that this technique is very hard if you try to find the perfection will be one of the five most hard difficult technique of Guitar world but many people know one amazing guy well a KING of guitar a GOD of guitar MR. Robert Fripp may be you heard the one of his master piece FRACTURE from Starless and Bible Black is amazing when i heard i think that there were a two guitars playing at the same time but there were just FRIPP
that's not the point. this is the picking style for this particular genre of music, full stop. you need to use different picking techniques for different styles. this is only one
their both huss and dalton guitars. james plays a james a shelton model, george plays a george shuffler model
thanks
i was trying to say if you know the name of the vdv or how to order it to plese tell me
@7jharr9 That's a shame, I'm young, but I have arthritis in my knees. Taking Cod Oil supplements and eating food with Olive Oil seems to help me strangely enough.
