    Agree, one of the strong points of the books is this kind of realism of lack of information. There is no objective narrator who tells us what is happening, but we see how people digest and create semi-reliable or false information all along.

    I also love this kind of narrative. I think the best "unreliable narrator" is in the Elder Scrolls series of games. Okay, I know the game isn't "narrated", but I'm talking about how everyone tells the story in an unreliable way an you kind of have to read everything from all points of views and think about it to actually get close to the "truth". I mean, Nords and imperials will talk about how the High Elves conquered them, but conveniently not mention how the empire did the same to them and all other races of Tamriel previously. Now, there's another thing in TES' universe that makes this even more complex and unreliable. Dragonbreaks. It's a hard concept to explain, but basically time "breaks" and results in numerous events which contradict each other happening at the same time and still converging back in one single timeline. That makes understanding history even more difficult XD

    Bryan ONeill I don’t think that the perception of the audience on the last season will have any effects on him writing his story. He said he already knows how the story will end, which Charakters will die and which will survive. If anything more people will be interested in the books now. They want to know how the “true” story ends and perhaps read the books although at first they only fell in love with the show.

    In the books, Jon and Tyrion meet similar to the show (outside the feast for the King) except Jon's got his direwolf with him and Tyrion's sitting perched up on a doorframe or something like that, I can't remember. He asks to pet Ghost and does this weird summersault down from the frame, lands upside down on his hands then flips again onto his feet. The whole thing with him sitting up on the building then doing this weird flip makes him seem like some magical goblin or something. It's just very counter to how Tyrion turns out to be later on but it can be argued it was a POV thing and more Jon's perception (it's his POV chapter). But then GRRM says stuff like in this interview and, yeah, it's just overall weird. lol

    @@angelas1060 I'm reading ADWD at the moment, and Tyrion reminisces a lot about his childhood, a time when he used to be practicing those kind of acrobatic moves all the time, cheered by most of the Casterly Rock people, specially by his uncle Gerion. What I'm trying to say here, is that Tyrion's likes used to be very different, but Tywin 'castrated' him in more than one way during his early years (I mean, The Imp even wanted to be a septum in his youth!). So, I would say the flip is not out of character at all.

    It seems he's not able to answer the actual question without spoiling the story. For instance he wrote a note at the end of a Feast for Crows, saying that this book was a bitch to write but a necessary one to align all the characters and get them in the right place for the next act. I'm sure there's many small choices he made at the start that butterfly'd into massive unanticipated problems that he had to write his way aorund again. Those are the narrative corners she was fishing for, but to explain those would be giving away the end-goal of the journey.

    I thought he'd mention that the kids are all too young. If I remember correctly, he initially planned a several year gap after the Red Wedding, but once he started writing books 3 and 4 he realized he couldn't do it, leaving many of the young characters younger than he would have liked. That's one thing the HBO show "fixed," aging up all the characters about three years.

    @Adrien Lasbleiz Yeah. But it was pretty big thing you left out. How the fuck is pointing out political marriages proving kids were considered adults so quickly? They were sometimes married quickly because somebody needed an alliance or land. Girls became women in middle ages at the age of 14. They could inherit land and bear children. Sure. But guess what age was it for boys? 21. They weren't administering inherited land if they are younger but their parents or other adult relatives. Young rulers often had regents, they weren't rulling kingdom at the age of 9 or 10. And in GoT Robb is the eldest not reaching 16 yet. Arya is a small preeten child, Rickon is 3, Bran 6 and Sansa like 12. They were very young. And name of the Black Death is just that. A name. It was propagated by adults not by small children. Please dude...

    Arguably the age up isn't a perfect "fix" as they apply it from the beginning. Though that may have been appropriate for the modern TV format, for example I believe Dany starts out something like 13 or 14 and quickly has a graphic marriage consummation scene with Khal Drogo. You can't get away with shit like that on TV, even HBO (paradoxically, considering TV has a rating system meant to "protect" children while books do not, I read GoT when I was 12 and could have easily bought it myself despite the "mature content").

Especially the Greyjoys holy shit lol they're too interesting and promising to write an unjustified ending....he could write 20 books on each family it's mind blowing.....AND THATS why the show imo has gone down hill so much since season 6, and really season 4. Arya is gonna come across as either being magically trained super-fast, to the point where the faceless men don't make sense in terms of the power they wield as an organisation, or she's just not gonna have the training needed for her intended purpose as a character resulting in either some major use of plot convenience to help her on her way or him having to give up on parts of her story altogether.

    The fact he writes with an unreliable narrator in mind makes you wonder how this is implemented in the series. Viewers believe anything as it is shown in the series. Now when parts of the narrative are subjectivly told one might wonder, which things in the series are really real. It might even be an entirely twisted story, that never played out that way.

  • @gatotsu2501

    @gatotsu2501

    Filmmakers have struggled with how to implement unreliable narrators for ages; the nature of a photographic (or pseudo-photographic) image implies objectivity in a way that a textual description of something does not. The camera, by default, is assumed to be an impartial (or at least, non-deceptive) narrator. The GoT is directed - and with the added challenge of trying to ground an audience in the “reality” of a fantasy world - the showrunners pretty much have to accept that anything depicted on the screen is “real”. So there’s less ambiguity in the story generally. But the showrunners still manage to incorporate some of the ambiguity and unreliability of the books (particularly in earlier seasons) by having certain events occur offscreen, communicating certain plot developments through dialogue rather than action (usually a taboo for screenwriting but not actually as bad as people say if done well), and using flashbacks only very sparingly (in the early seasons not at all).

    I'm an unpublished author. A few years ago, I talked someone into reading one of my novels. He got a few chapters in and stopped. A while later, I asked him how he liked it so far and where he was in the book, and he finally informed me of stopping. He said there were two many inconsistencies and gave me a handful of examples, and literally everything he named was intentional foreshadowing, mostly clues that a particular character was lying and scheming. I explained the twist that was coming (in the next chapter if I remember right), and the guy was like "Oh... That makes sense." But, he never continued. I wish people trusted me as much as they trusted GRRM, but it seems like if they don't go into reading it with that level of trust, it can't be earned because they will feel discouraged or frustrated when they realize your foreshadowing is above their head.

  • @ClaireYunFarronXIII

    @ClaireYunFarronXIII

    I am sorry about that... My readers though know that my inconsistencies are intentional, so I am blessed with smart readers. Here is some advice, fellow writer: Structure your books in the way that best communicates the type of narrative you want to express. See, if you want to tell a mystery story, do not use a god-like point-of-view structure, because the gaps will be obvious and seem unintentional. Force your readers into the mystery rather than helping them cower from above. Use 3rd person Limited, 2nd person, or 1st person Limited. If you are writing a mystery, set the tone of mystery and uncertainty right at the start so your readers feel a certain way. If you are writing a comedy, maybe your first line should be a joke or something humorous like, “Only evil people smoke. I bet Adoft Hitler smoked, cause he liked burning flesh!” Set the tone. I set the tone in my books early. For my main Fantasy Horror Mystery series I have been working on and released, the first chapter opens with three people being murdered in icy woodlands. The creature that killed them is described but not by name since the POV character did not know it by name. The chapter ends with only a paragraph of the creature's description, and cuts away when the POV character is killed. The rest of the first book, other characters are speculating what killed them. Some say a boar did it, others a bear, some said frost bite. There are no bodies. My readers were frightened because the thing that killed them looked nothing anyone can pinpoint a name to. Readers wonder what that thing is. In my third book I show more of these, but a massive number. About six established main characters are trapped in a blizzard and retreated to an abandoned fort. Long-story-short, a horde of those things storm the fort and kill them all... My point is, establish the type of narrative you want to explore by the start. Readers will know what to feel throughout. Establish the intentional inconsistencies. I do it by showing the relationships of the characters and the world and the events. Before my book's story opens, thirteen years ago the King was overthrown in a revolution. For the whole first book I very clearly tell readers the story through the perspective of the winners, even opening with a play reenacting the events in a comedic-like way, and the "evil king" is portrayed as this egotistical man-child who abuses his wife and has sex with his seven year old daughter. The new ruler - described as egotistical and prideful - says he beat the old king to death on this throne. This is all readers are told. This new king is NOT a POV character, so readers can't see whether or not he is lying or exaggerating. In book two readers are told that the old king had some of his kids hidden by the raging mob with a few loyal guards. We learn from a loyal guard that the old king was not beaten, but committed suicide... This guard IS a POV character, so readers are inside his head as he recalls the horrific event... Fill your novels with many obvious examples of your tone and story and mystery, your readers will look for more subtle ones within the text. My category of embedding mystery is in three layers: •Obvious Mysteries •Less Obvious Mysteries •Very Subtle Mysteries All three are parallel with each other. At first read, my readers are only drawn to the obvious because they are...obvious and interesting and glaring, so they are too invested in the obvious they miss the subtle. On second to third read they noticed the more subtle ones. That is what I see in my reviews of my main book series... I know doing all this is hard, but take it slow... Don't overwhelm yourself. Start with one or two subtleties, then add more with each project you write. What I said can apply to mystery, comedy, intentional deceptions on your part. Establish that type of tone and give it a pay off. Also, don't make the inconsistencies the driving narrative. Make something easy to follow the narrative, then have the inconsistencies the coating. Don't loose your core story in all the inconsistencies. Choose the right POV characters to tell the story. That is my advice to you, fellow writer. You don't have to follow it, but this is what I do and it has got me a strong community of readers who look deep into my novels and expect a lot from 19+ year old me. It is scary. Good luck!

    @@krzysztofpiasek5682 I've won several awards for journalism and placed in a major international screenwriting competition, so, I think I know how to write pretty well. And, as I pointed out, EVERY example was intentional foreshadowing. The reader that time was my brother and somehow he didn't pick up on the fact that when a trusted, likable character is constantly saying things that don't perfectly line up with what the reader knows for sure, it's a major clue the character is not actually trustworthy. Other people have loved the story, but you really can't earn people's trust if you don't start out with it. People can get excited about an unseen plot twist, but people generally don't like feeling like someone they know from their own life can pull off a plot twist that is completely unforseen yet heavily foreshadowed, because it makes them feel stupid. The feeling that one has drastically underestimated a peer or family member is unpleasant for most.

    A very tiny percentage of readers will catch minor mistakes. And they are people who did not throw the book off their balcony. They are people who bought the book and read it. That's important. It would take glaring inconsistencies to get them to stop reading or rail about it on the internet, that the author cheated them by doing sloppy work. You can't please everyone, and no work of art is ever perfect. But due diligence ups the percentage of satisfied customers, making that a worthy goal for authors. But mistakes, such as logistical incontinuities and chronological impossibilities, do have a price. Most of those are mild and not blatant, for if it were blatant, the author would have caught them already. They are forgetable and benign, especially since they likely don't even appear in the reader's consciousness. But what makes them insidious is that the reader's unconscious mind never misses a trick. It knows about all the mistakes. Nothing gets past it. But, it almost always never gets to the awareness of the conscious mind, bc reading fiction is much like a dream, and in dreams we only focus on what happens in the 'scene' right in front of us. We don't spend any effort in putting two and two together, at least not in the moment. The fictive dream is no different, and authors themselves go into the fictive dream when they read, edit, rewrite, and revise their own work, so it's easy to miss things, even for them. The end result is the reader has an 'inkling' that something doesn't add up. They often can't define that, but it is still there in their unconscious. The more of this that happens, the more of a 'weird feeling' the reader gets once they finish reading a novel and think about it. And that can affect how they rank it on Amazon or other sites. They know something is a bit off but don't know what that is, and a 4 rating can then become a 3. Will they buy that author's next novel? Probably, but mistakes make it less likely. So GRRM and all authors worth their salt try very diligently to not have such incontinuities in their work. Perfection is always the goal, even if unattainable. That said, it is surprising, if you take the time to investigate this, how many plot holes there are in almost everything. More in TV bc the deadline issues are more demanding. Even the best stuff has issues. When Director Howard Hawks and writer William Faulkner were nailing down the script for Raymond Chandler's 'The Big Sleep', they had to call Chandler (who was under contract to a different studio at the time) to find out what was really going on in the part about the killer of Arthur Geiger who was also murdered, that same night. They asked 'Who murdered him'. Chandler thought for a minute, then said something to the effect of 'I have no idea'. He had a glaring plot hole, a thread in the story that was never resolved. If Chandler can do it and get away with it, and that book is highly revered and in the canon, that implies that quality will transcend little mistakes.

Characters seeing each other and just brushing it off and not having good developing scenes. With that said, some of it is understandable but the lack of tactics and logic is inexcusable in my opinion. The show runners could have "upped" the numbers of soldiers for some of the armies because at this point, I feel like it won't make much sense who wins regardless either. The Jon/Dany love story is fine with me, but they better spend time developing them more because they are cardboard or basic chemistry at best.

    I think the show is great and also it should be a lot different than the book. When a movie/show tries to make it similar to the book, it just reminds you how its nothing compared to the book. That's why both the things should be considered distinct and comparison will only kill the superiority of either presentation. So I really think both things should be kept aside perceptually and comparitively too.

    Nice dodge, George. I think we know why you bailed on the TV series after they caught up with the three books everyone likes.

    I guess so. I really don't get why he can't just sit his ass down and finish them. It took him 10 years between A Storm of Swords and A Dance with Dragons. Now it's been 10 years since A Dance with Dragons, so shouldn't we be expecting a release within the next year or so?

    @@martina-dd6vb respect?!? Respect has nothing to do with it. And yeah I do respect him because of his work. But it's also true that he is about to have a major heart attack and die before he finishes the story. So I suggest this fat fuck start exercising and spend more time on finishing the book on a timely manner. I'm his biggest fan though.

    sanniyasin I don't know why you need to be so rude about it, yes he's fat but not all fat people have to die of a heart attack. He's been like this for a long time and I suppose he's doing just fine. I don't wanna argue with you, I just don't think it's nice how everyone talks about his death, like why is that necessary?

    @@martina-dd6vb oh, I get it. You are one of those 300 pound SJW who argues fat people can be healthy and beautiful, let's all be accepting and nice..... wake up life is real. When you sell me a book with an unfinished story there is unwritten agreement that you would finish, let's say, in 20 years. Instead,again, this fat fuck just published another book, blood and fire.
