Don's voice started deteriorating way back in the mid 1990s By 2002 he had lost his upper range and part of his mid range. By 2010 he pretty much lost it completely. I think what happened sometime between 1999-2002 was he damaged his voice on tour and despite having significant issues he continued touring, further damaging his voice instead of halting the tour. The other issue is that he was a HEAVY smoker, apparently he smoked 2 packs per day, and had been smoking since well before he formed Dokken, although smoking contributed to his decline, it cannot be the sole factor. It's a combination of factors. And indeed he contracted cancer sometime in the late 2000s I believe and then recently had a spinal surgery which almost paralyzed him, he couldn't move his hand and could barely walk for a while and that apparently damaged his voice even more. Interestingly enough though, despite being a heavy smoker all through his career, his voice had improved SIGNIFICANTLY between 1981 and 1987, by the time he recorded under lock and key and back for the attack he was in his prime as a vocalist, he increased his power, range and incorporated a vibrato which he didn't have on the first album. What was particularly impressive with Don's vocals is that he was a baritone or even low baritone (he had a fairly low speaking voice) and managed to have an insane range, just listen to songs like Lightning strikes again, unchain the night etc.. The thing is that Don never had much power but he had tricks up his sleeve to make his voice appear powerful, notably in ways he ended high notes or adding a bit of distortion. Don was a pretty unique singer. His voice was instantly recognizable and was a big part of the classic Dokken sound.

Obviously, if he took better care of himself , I'd fair to say ,being in shape , better support for his voice, and energy level overall.. He's not showing up to 'kill it' he's showing up for a paycheck... I've seen them many times over the years, as George is one of my favorite guitarists. He came to a small venue, with three quarters of his band , not George on guitar, but another amazing guitarist. They were billed with LA Gunns .. Don was such a freaking disappointment, I couldn't even say he was half-assed that would be way to generous..

Your doing your own thing with your own unique sound..you could have easily just hung on the VH name and made a career but you didn't and impressed the S out of everyone..best of luck to you !! Ego is a tremendous factor in the music industry. The trick is to recognize where you belong in the grand theme of things based on fan appeal. As much as Don Dokken and George Lynch hate each other it's in their both best interest to work together because none of their separate endeavors have had near the acceptance as "Dokken". What they both need to do is determine what is more important... their wallet or their ego.

Turns out Geralt of Rivia can shred. And he sounds a lot like the Great George Lynch. Seriously, he's got to be top five to ever pick up an electric guitar.

That was interesting, watching Don Dokken do his spoken word poetry over George Lynch's guitar playing.

Crazy how someone can go from singing something as incredibly difficult as kiss of death or lightning strikes again in the 80s with insane range for a baritone or even low baritone (he had quite a low speaking voice) and now being barely able to make a sound

Horrible comments here. I'm not sure why people have the need to write negative comments. If you're not a fan nor appreciate Dokken, move on. It's nice rhat they're still around and people that grew up with their music can still appreciate them as they've changed and gotten older, just like the rest of us.

I love the fact that Don still goes out there and tours… and gets George to play DOKKEN songs. Touring can’t be easy either.
